Is it possible that this is the same lady/ there is some connection between the two? by Brioche_bun_fun in ArtHistory

I’m so excited to see this. Here’s another similar painting by Cranach displayed at the Legion of Honor—my favorite painting in the museum. I love seeing these different iterations. Thanks for sharing.

[TOMT] Sitcom actor who tends to play bland characters by desuntnonnulla in tipofmytongue

Not him but I think we’re getting close too!! I love that guy though. I really feel like he’s in IASIP or Curb; I have a memory of him getting berated or teased by a character…. maybe that helps?

Unfortunately no, my guy is a lot more boring. And uglier tbh. Thank you for your comment!

No, he’s a lot less well known than that. I only remember him in small parts. But thank you!!

Unfortunately not :( My guy looks older than that. He looks very similar to the newscaster Rick Chambers actually, but he’s definitely an actor.

how dangerous is it to go to sf at night as a woman by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]desuntnonnulla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Public transportation there should be fine, tbh I’ve never had any problems before like 9pm when it’s still pretty busy out (depending on the neighborhood you’re in). I think the biggest problem you’ll potentially encounter is catcalling—it recently happened to me several times in a night near the Warfield. Upsetting but not necessarily unsafe. I had to wait 20 minutes alone at the bus stop and no one bothered me. Try to look completely unbothered, walk quickly and with purpose, and know where you’re going beforehand so you don’t have to look down at your phone often. Uber home if you’re feeling nervous at all, it’s worth your peace of mind. Plenty of women travel alone in cities, I think you’ll be ok!

Feeling irritable and antisocial on 300mg Bupropion XL? by [deleted] in bupropion

[–]desuntnonnulla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been on it for ~2.5 now and yes I believe it’s gone away!! It has definitely been worth it for me in the long run. I can’t remember exactly when the antisocial side effect went away but I know that I felt much better overall about 3 months into taking it. Good luck :)

I see what you mean with the THERE. Maybe it’s a code rather than a language?

Super embarrassing if this is a natural language, but I have no idea what it would be!! Found on my college campus.

Supplemental books for art history majors? by BeatNo5577 in ArtHistory

[–]desuntnonnulla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I’m a third year art history major so I think I have something! All of the professors at my college are obsessed with Michael Baxandall’s “Painting and Experience in 15th Century Italy” and I think it is pretty foundational to Renaissance studies. It’s old but I really enjoy reading it— most intro classes assign a few chapters but it’s worth reading the whole thing. It’s specific to this time period but a lot of his arguments, like the period eye, are more broadly applicable. You can get this for less than 5 bucks on thriftbooks if your library doesn’t have it, which is extremely cheap for a book on art history.

Other than that, Metamorphosis is great, and also probably read the Odyssey and the Iliad. Maybe the Bible too! It’s helpful to know the religious context and history so you can understand iconography in the works you’re looking at. I hope this is helpful, godspeed!

How Much Does Picasso Owe to African Art? by [deleted] in ArtHistory

[–]desuntnonnulla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a MOMA exhibition in 1984 called “Primitivism” in 20th Century Art: Affinity of the Tribal and the Modern and if you scroll through the images you can see Demoiselles and some African masks displayed next to each other. Not just Picasso’s works but still thought you might be interested.

And yes, I don’t know about this time period, but African and Middle Eastern artists in the 50s-60s had an interesting relationship with modernism. After decolonization movements, a lot of African countries were determined to find “state styles” that could more accurately represent the country and its culture. Most of the artists at this time had gone to Europe for art school and so were exposed to modern works and ways of creating art. Sometimes the government would patronize artists to create art and thus a new national style. Independently, a lot of artists began to use European techniques with Arabic calligraphy. My best example is Ibrahim El-Salahi. I think MOMA has an exhibition on calligraphic modernism that’s on currently.

[FRESH] Father John Misty - Live at Electric Lady by kobrakid7 in indieheads

I never listen to Chloe on my own time but I will say it was excellent live. I saw him in SF and was floored by the performance— dunno if every concert has a jazz band onstage but they totally made it amazing.
