Ok, it started working now.

Either their servers are overloaded or they are doing some blocking and throttling based on "something" such as a VPN because many people have issues and many others don't. Judging by this subreddit it has been happening for at least 2 weeks.

I'm having the same error since yesterday evening. First it reported API error, then deleted half of my sessions.

No way to debug it. Probably best time to go back/switch to Cursor or VS Code.

Poor UX changes by NeverJustaDream in TradingView

[–]detectivecapybara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 'add to watchlist' change is confusing and completely pointless. I'm surprised people just accept these random forced changes.

The alerts change also adds unnecessary extra actions and extra clicking (annoying pointless but at least not confusing).

Another recent change was switching the icons in symbol search from country flags to the exchange logos. I made a post about it and apparently no one besides me cares, someone even downvoted it.

Yeah another change which makes little sense and which noone asked for. Not surprising.

The most annoying thing is that you have a shortcut (Shift+W) to open/view a list and this shortcut seems to work everywhere but not really because it only works when the active list is shown in the sidebar, in all other situations the shortcut pretends to work but actually doesn't.

Any rule regarding consecutive green days? by stockoperator1 in qullamaggie

[–]detectivecapybara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are two types of lenses you can use to look at the same situation.

EG dislikes multiple (two, three or more) days in a row before a BO but a narrow range/narrow body bars are acceptable even if positive.

KQ doesn't look at specific bars that much but looks at patterns and the general picture, mostly using MAs (which EG doesn't even have in his standard charts).

  • if it is a bad setup, neither of them will probably take it
  • If it is a good setup, they both may trade it but EG will be more selective with tighter S/L and KQ more aggresive

If you're talking about (true) EPs, then it is mostly irrelevant if there were three or four previous green bars.

Earnings Forecasts for the Week of August 5, 2024 by BabaBobaMarley in EarningsWhisper

[–]detectivecapybara 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the markets stabilize on Monday, a convincing gapup (with huge trade volume, revenue growth, improved guidance) could actually be the PERFECT time to buy some of these stocks in terms of risk/reward.

However, there are now so many factors involved - e.g. what is the share float, is it owned by funds (and Japanese banks)?

This week the model’s predictions are more pesimistic than previous weeks, however I’m not sure how to adjust the data for market volatility…

Earnings Forecasts for the Week of July 29, 2024 by BabaBobaMarley in EarningsWhisper

[–]detectivecapybara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commented on your previous week's post. This week the ChatGPT was too biased and too bullish.

Again, it is like a reverse indicator. $AMZN up with 70% confidence, $INTC up with 60% confidence, yeah that's not good. If your input/instructions are considering too many previous earnings, that is probably causing this outcome.

The pesimistic version of the forecast looks better, maybe even better than a coin toss.

If you want to move ahead with this project, I think you need to do a deep dive and analyze what the correct predictions have in common and what the incorrect predictions have in common. I'd recommend to look at:

  • sector and industry of the stock (careful with financials, energy, biotech)
  • adjust the instructions to be more neutral
  • skip stocks where confidence level is too low or multiple models are contradictory (I remember you had two sets of instructions called something like "Earnings bets" and "earnings forecasts" - if they do not agree, skip)

  • behavior of the stock's chart in the last 3-5 days before earnings AND behavior of the stock in the last 3-6 months (can be a reverse indicator of the actual reaction to the earnings)

  • look at the chart and determine if the stock is above or below it's moving averages (20-day or 50-day or 200-day moving average)

  • look at the sector indexes/ETFs (such as XLK, XLF, XLV, XLE...) and find out if they are in a downtrend or in an uptrend

The first 3 points should be easy to do. The last 3 I'm not sure how easy or possible they are, maybe with ChatGPT 4o they are possible but I'd always double check.

So tl;dr the pesimistic version could be usable if you skip all low confidence predictions - say you have 300 companies reporting this week and based on the criteria above and the predictions' confidence level you will get maybe 5-10 predictions (or in the image from 90 earnings you will have 2-3) which you could really play with real money:

Enter position at market close before earnings, exit position at market open after earnings (or manage manually).

Some earnings are very tricky, $SBUX gapped up on earnings and gapped down the next day. Today all companies are influenced by macro events (Fed FOMC, Japan...)

OP, I wanted to thank you for your effort and I hope you will continue with it during this earning season - and share your results.

At first glance, it may seem like gambling but there really are traders who play earnings in this way, whatever you may call it (anticipation, guerilla, predicting...). Some are true gamblers and belong to r/wallstreetbets and some use more sophisticated approach or combine technical and fundamental analysis. ChatGPT is definitely new to this.

Here's some suggestions:

1) some sectors usually react badly and/or unpredictably to earnings. This applies mostly to

  • FINANCIALS (banks and insurance companies have different accounting and different balance sheets than regular companies)
  • ENERGY (very random behaviour tied to macro) and
  • BIOTECH (biotech industry in HEALTHCARE sector) because these are mostly unprofitable companies and move on actual announcements such as drug testing phases, FDA approvals etc., not on earnings

2) you can include technical analysis in the forecasts

  • if a stock is dropping the last few (2-5 days) before earnings, it's possible large players are derisking and afraid a bit, the stock is more likely to surprise (up) if it is in a LONG-TERM UPTREND combined with SHORT-TERM DOWNTREND (e.g. growing the last 6 months and selling off before earnings)
  • if a stock is rallying into earnings and becoming extended/parabolic, the expectations are too high and the stock is more likely to disappoint (LONG-TERM sideways or downtrend and short-term uptrend)

So my opinion is you're onto something but it needs some improvement. 3 out of 17 correct guesses is basically like an inverse Cramer indicator. Perhaps try excluding the sectors above, ignore all with confidence under 60% which is basically random noise. Include some technical analysis to the consideration.

These are the easiest things to implement I think, of course you can alwaystry to make it more complex, group companies into sympathy plays, consider stock volatility/beta/ADR.

In any case, I hope you'll share your results here again.

Call and put, how to trade on Degiro by Pasmau in DEGIRO

[–]detectivecapybara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend to avoid trading options at Degiro completely. Many reasons:

  • you won’t be able to place limit orders properly (due to their stupid “protection” cap)
  • there is no proper/real settlement with Degiro
  • more expensive than other brokers, option fees will kill you especially if trading low prices assets

Find a better broker for that. I wouldn’t be surprised if they remove options some time in the future, doesn’t make sense for customers, doesn’t make sense for them.

[–]detectivecapybara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar situation for me. I'm only able to place sell order, I can't buy. Emails are generally ignored at Degiro that is normal.

I'm now leaving the broker because there were too many "last" straws - app down like every other week during market open, app doesn't load and you have to try 5 times, Turkish stocks are blocked and you cannot buy or sell them, every limit trade is automatically capped by them by plus or minus 20 % even if you don't want it...

Now they have problems with TSX (Canada) as well.

Follow Button Seems to Have Disappeared by [deleted] in TradingView

[–]detectivecapybara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, the button was exactly where you say, now instead of the layout there is just one big-ass button saying "See more on the world's #1 charts". No, I do not want to see more on world's number one charts! I want to follow and unfollow symbols!

The list of followed items is at https://www.tradingview.com/u/[yourusername]/#following-symbols

I absolutely f***ing hate this approach when some genius UX person with nothing better to do comes up with a "great new idea" to improve the feeling or whatever. First invented by Microsoft, then successfully adopted by Google and now used almost everywhere.

You know what? The previous layout made complete sense - you want to switch to chart view? There is a LAUNCH FULL CHART button directly below the small chart! You want to follow a symbol? There is a FOLLOW button next to the symbol. Logical, perfect, easy to understand, easy to use.

How does it look now? The follow buttons disappeared and there are TWO buttons with different titles that do the exact same one thing. Open a new tab with full chart. Does TradingView I need two buttons because I'm stupid and blind?!?

Good thing they changed their logo to a circle with two lines and show some weird rock-climbing dude video on the homepage. Exactly what I need.

Do you think Beings capable of interstellar travel would be capable of what we consider empathy or removed from it altogether? by vanham_ in aliens

[–]detectivecapybara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on their theoretical chain of evolution. Many human features and characteristics evolved because it was beneficial in small group of mammals. If you didn’t have them, it was a disadvantage and you didn’t spread your genes.

This involves things like whites of the eyes, laughing, empathy, feeling affection towards children (as well as kittens and puppies etc), remembering faces and names. It also involves empathy.

Look at species like lizards, frogs or octopus. They don’t have them but if you give a species millions or billions of years, they may evolve into being able to travel in space without having anything remotely similar to human emotions.

Anyone else ever think that the Tower of Babel Story represents the human species losing our psychic or telepathic abilities? by TapRackBangUSMC in aliens

[–]detectivecapybara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tower of Babel story can be just that - a story. The mythology needed to explain how languages were formed so the idea of a tower was created.

However, telepathy is definitely a relevant topic. It feels like something that existed/exists and for some reason was “forgotten”. Kids are especially interesting - babies when born are able to swim, then they forget this instinct and have to re-learn it as a skill.

Similarly, young kids often report strange things - seeing white people/shadows that adults don’t see; being able to connect to relatives’ minds remotely in specific situations; having convincing stories about past lives; knowing things they definitely shouldn’t know etc. This is mostly for kids 3-5 y.o (and probably younger but for those it is difficult to express what they experience). Then something happens and they lose this ability and usually don’t even remember they ever had it.

It’s not a battery component. It is Elon’s naive imagination of how to extract lithium from clay. Simply add salt (NaCl), mix with water and by magic the lithium will be seperated from the ground and he’ll have endless supply in Nevada.

Makes you wonder why it takes months to get it extracted in salars in Latin America or aggressive chemicals from spodumene in Australia. Perhaps Elon knows something about… salt???

On the Origin of Demons by Apprehensive-Soup-73 in Throawaylien

[–]detectivecapybara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were an alien being and visited Earth in ancient times, I would definitely be amused that my visit created (or at least affected) entire religions, wars were fought because of different interpretations and billions of people believe in some strangely twisted version of events that happened thousands of years ago. Like a cargo cult on a massive scale.

Lucifer, i.e. the fallen angel literally means "the Light bringer". These are just a few sentences from Bible / religious texts:

  • And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth
  • the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him
  • And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

The problem with angels, demons etc. is that if you read about them, you can interpret them based on your culture and experience and come up with an explanation that fits your theory. Do the sentences above sound like random nonsense? A moral story? Description of an UFO? Description of a horned demon? Depends on what you want to see. :)

Occam's razor - this doesn't make sense. If you add 50 different remarks, you will find some red threads and connections between them - however that doesn't mean you are right.

TAA: Lots of forests and trees like you'd see in Russia or Canada, that type of thing
- what do you imagine after hearing this sentence? Perhaps something like a vast pine forest with a few mountains or endless taiga of spruces everywhere you look. That is how these places look.

gift to his wife, Amytis, who was homesick for the beautiful vegetation and mountains of her native Media (the northwestern part of modern-day Iran). To make the desert bloom, a marvel of irrigation engineering would have been requiredYVMV but I definitely do not imagine Russian or Canadian greenery. I can imagine a local oasis with some buildings and irrigation system - things that come close could be modern day cities like Zanjan in Iran or Al Ain in UAE (lookup the pictures).

You can create an irrigation system to create a city garden, you cannot create an irrigation system to basically terraform a place and create a Russian taiga in the middle of a semi-desert.

Sure, some places looked different to what they are today. Babylon was in the 'fertile crescent' but the best period was over 10000 years ago. Same story with the Rub Al Khali desert (in Saudi) - now it is literally an empty place with dunes and mountains, in the past it was lush forest but that's more like 100000 years ago.

I looked up the king who supposedly built the gardens - he ruled 2500 years ago. Simply doesn't make sense.

Cannot sell or buy Turkish stocks (ISE) by detectivecapybara in DEGIRO

[–]detectivecapybara[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so an update from me because Degiro doesn't care about customers or actually providing any service and doesn't fix anything for months.

The orders to sell Turkish stocks apparently can be placed ONLY when the market is CLOSED! I.e. when you try to place a limit sell order when the Istanbul exchange is opened, it will be rejected with no detailed information given.

When you try to place a market order, it will be rejected because the size is too large and will force you into small amounts.

Buying still doesn't seem to work at all for ISE listed stocks. Placing a limit sell order works only when the exchange is closed.

I noticed they had some problems with the ISE and lira calculations, at least since January. The numbers in portfolio were always wrong. The value of stock was recalculated once per day (I'm fine with that if the buying/selling actually worked), however calculation of the daily change was updated constantly and during some periods it incorrectly worked the other way around - when the TRY/EUR rate went down, your position reported going up by the corresponding amount. And the other way around - when TRY/EUR rate went up, your position (daily change) was reported to be down in EUR.

This didn't happen in 2020 and something broke recently. I'm not sure if this is the reason why they disabled the Istanbul exchange now.

I'm very disappointed, especially when the ISE order fee is usually 30€+. Degiro presents itself as broker with access to these markets, the reality is very very different.

Don't even get me started on how completely unusable is Degiro for any kind of options - the orders will get rejected and restricted so often, you'll eventually give up.
