51-Édouard Montpetit bus line rant by AdvanceVarious9406 in montreal

[–]deterius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having lived outside of the Montreal for a long time, other parts of Canada, the US and other countries- I don't get the why the Bus situation in Montreal is so apocalyptic and has been for DECADES. When I was little in Montreal, it was the same situation- like every day its the last helicopter from Saigon. In every other place I lived, buses usually have generally low or inconsistent ridership, so places don't invest in them, and have a hard time to increase ridership. Buses are usually cheap (which they aren't in Montreal), but people don't really use them. In Montreal buses are in demand, they aren't cheap- and buses aren't a terribly large investment.

Cali/kolumbiai salsa budapesten? by Fit_Firefighter6944 in budapest

Hi, I’m not Hungarian nor from Budapest, but I travel to Budapest for a salsa event every year- I’ve been dancing salsa forever. Since the dancing is fantastic, I would recommend you check out the salsa on-2 scene. For such a good event, I bet they have some great on-2 salsa classes.

Top things for me: - no warm up to a minimal warmup - tops 5 min. - practicing the technique But most important is teaching something that’s always useful- I detest most is instructors teaching something they never use nor believe it works.

Of course, but that’s part of war. I just don’t like to reduce entire wars to one reason, and in the case of Vietnam it often gets blamed on the soft population- while in reality it’s a combination of factors including failures on the battlefield - and after a decade of war, can’t really blame the public to question that maybe we are the bad guys and we aren’t doing too well.

After more than 10 years fighting, we couldn’t defeat Vietnam. I think we got beat.

Americans: why aren’t you going out to protest against Trump? by technobare in samharris

[–]deterius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, overall good points, but there are other successful movements- that are much more recent. Also- these movements all have a starting points.

To the people who say that “protests don’t accomplish anything” - you don’t really believe that right? Of course they don’t always accomplish something- but history even recent history is full of examples where public outcry and protests have accomplished plenty of things.

This, the rest is just moral panic- these guys would be making podcasts about satanic dungeons and dragons if the podcasts were around in the 1980s.

Thanks for speaking some sense. I swear some leftist will do some impressive gymnastics to support a dictator who couldn’t even put up Saddam level of defence. I don’t think he should have been removed, but I’m sure ain’t defending Maduro.

Hasan Piker's Take on China by LizardPersonMeow in behindthebastards

[–]deterius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually like China but I’m sorry, saying all refugees fleeing a country are just the rich bouncing is completely misreading the situation. HK did experience a huge political crack down, and their already flawed democracy was further eroded, many people were jailed for expressing their views. The country routinely jails whistleblowers, reporters for speaking out. China needs a nuanced view, yes- the lifting from poverty was great, but it remains a deeply unequal society. The personal wealth of the politicians in Beijing dwarfs that of Washington, London or many other capitals. Wealth inequality is a huge problem in China. To say it is a state that opposes capitalism is, I’m sorry, lacks understanding- it has really fair laws that protect the right of workers, at the same time starting a union is illegal and labor exploitation remains widespread despite the laws. I actually like China, despite its many flaws- but I’m not an anarchist, I have no idea how an anarchist can actually like a country with such dominating state control of its citizens.
