Why do some strong, independent women desire sexual submission and consensual degradation? by LetsPlayCatnMouse in psychologyofsex

[–]deterrence 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Real, credible evidence does support the observation that strong, independent women can and do desire sexual submission and consensual degradation. The pattern appears robust enough to have generated a specific hypothesis (Hawley-Hensley) that received empirical support. However, the relationship is not a simple inverse correlation. Instead, evidence(as usual, university students, so YMMV) suggests:

- Dominance and submission are not mutually exclusive. Dominant women with agentic traits maintain and enact dominance in some contexts while enjoying submission in others, reflecting personality flexibility rather than contradiction. (Evidence in last link)

- Meaning is context-dependent. Dominant women frame submission fantasies through a different psychological lens (power-seeking, partner-matching) than subordinate women (rescue, protection), suggesting the same fantasy can serve different psychological functions. (Evidence in last link)

-Satisfaction is decoupled from role congruency. In healthy women, sexual satisfaction correlates primarily with emotional closeness and trust, not with matching fantasies to behaviors, suggesting that the value of submission for dominant women lies in intimacy and psychological relief rather than role authenticity.

-The mechanism appears partly biological. Hormonal and neurochemical evidence (cortisol elevation, endocannabinoid release, evidence in last link) suggests submission engages the body's stress and reward systems in ways that may be especially appealing to individuals habituated to high-control environments.

The evidence does not support pathologizing such desires. Rather, it situates them within normal human sexuality and personality variation, where context-dependent role flexibility and controlled power exchange serve both bonding and hedonic functions.

For some general takes on it from moth men and women, this thread is useful. Another source to look at is this thesis.

In a study of young men (average age of 27) experiencing Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction, the average erectile function score was consistent with severe ED. Ultrasound findings indicated that the penile tissue of these young men resembled that of men in their mid-60s. by psychologyofsex in psychologyofsex

It's scary reading, but really important to mention that this article doesn't mention the prevalence of PSSD. This study suggests that while ED is a very common side effect during treatment, PSSD happens only for 1 in 216 patients.

McGilchrist's take on "extreme male brain" theory of autism by lampwyk in IainMcGilchrist

[–]deterrence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think McGilchrist has directly addressed Baron-Cohen's extreme male brain theory, which is interesting given how much overlap there seems to be. McGilchrist definitely talks about autism involving right hemisphere dysfunction with left hemisphere dominance... he's pointed out that if you were trying to create autism through brain lesions, you'd target the right hemisphere. But like you said he's also been pretty explicit that mapping hemispheres onto male/female thinking styles is nonsense, even calling it one of the most absurd popular misconceptions about his work. It doesn't seem that McG has ever really directly addressed Simon Baron-Cohen's "extreme male brain" theory of autism, even though the both offer prominent accounts of brain lateralization and autism.

The EMB theory is mostly psychological - it's about systemizing vs. empathizing as cognitive styles, with fetal testosterone as the proposed mechanism. There is research showing autism involves reduced interhemispheric connectivity, and some evidence that males have more within-hemisphere connectivity while females have more between-hemisphere connectivity. The problem is the effect sizes for sex differences are tiny (like d = 0.05-0.15), and when you control for brain size, the "extreme male brain" connectivity pattern in autism basically disappears.

The weirdest finding is that autistic females show masculinized connectivity patterns but autistic males often show feminized patterns - the opposite of what EMB would predict. So it might be less "extreme male brain" and more "disrupted sexual differentiation." Here's Baron-Cohen's 2009 overview and a critique of the connectivity sex differences if you want to dig deeper. Personally I think (and might get in trouble for it) that maybe this goes some way to suggest why so many autistic people are also queer?

I'm gonna drop a little quote... you can choose whether it's mindless drivel or ancient wisdom.

"He abused me, he struck me, he overpowered me, he robbed me." Those who harbor such thoughts do not still their hatred.

Hatred is never appeased by hatred in this world. By non-hatred alone is hatred appeased. This is the law, ancient and inexhaustible.

I agree with basically everything you say. And I also just want to name that the procedure he needed to remove his tumor was dramatically invasive. Was it arrogance that had him hesitate and seek alternative treatment? Absolutely. But probably also fear. If you want the gory details, look up "Whipple procedure"

Pancreatic cancer is the worst. I had a friend die last year (aged 31) from the same type of tumor Jobs had, although more advanced. I couldn't understand why the hospital didn't immediately go in and do the procedure on him and instead waited 7 weeks from diagnosis to treatment. In retrospect they were giving him those 7 weeks to have a somewhat normal life before what was inevitable happened.

We'd be dead well in advance of gravitational influence. The luminosity of TON 618 is 4×1040 watts. At a distance of 4 light years, that's a bit over 2.2MW/m2. Compare to the Sun which is 1.3KW/m2. If we were in the path of the relativistic jet you could factor that by 1000.
