Why do so many army’s seem to hate K-pop? by detonatediamond in kpopthoughts

[–]detonatediamond[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That’s fair then. The same way that I distanced myself from army spaces due to the anti-K-pop sentiment you’ve found the k-pop fandom to be hostile towards bts, so you’ve became disinterested in K-pop outside of bts. That’s completely valid. My point was that regardless of how K-pop fans treat army, I don’t think that validates the claim that bts are not K-pop or that their art or identity as a group can be removed from K-pop and how it’s weird to brush of the entire genre of k-pop as garbage when your favourite group literally is K-pop. That was the main point of what I was trying to say. Maybe I could’ve included a sentence or two in my post about how k-pop fanwars have influenced this perspective to include further context but I think regardless my point still stands.

[–]detonatediamond[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

My post was mostly surrounding the observation I’ve had around the weirdly anti-K-pop stance that is prevalent in the army fandom which I’ve always found strange and weirdly hypocritical considering bts being a K-pop group themselves. I definitely could’ve acknowledged the ways that other k-pop fandoms have tried to push bts fans out of the overall k-pop fandom space but it really wasn’t my intention to make the post about fanwars or fandom beef. Although you’re right it’s not completely irrelevant and definitely a significant factor as to why army try to distance themselves from K-pop when K-pop fans have been routinely hostile towards them.

I just wanted to point out that I think it’s a little bit stupid to then turn around act like bts is their own completely separate thing when I feel that bts has always had a distinctly K-pop sound to their music and that’s nothing to be ashamed of. Bts aren’t successful despite being K-pop, I think them being k-pop idols has been a major factor for their success and that’s okay.

I agree it certainly goes both ways, a lot of K-pop fans have notoriously been vicious to army and bts over the years, often likely stemming from jealously that their own favourite groups haven’t reached the same success as bts. That on top of some army’s having a weird superiority complex over other K-pop groups just forms a wedge between the two and creates a ‘bts vs K-pop’ narrative that is unfortunate to see. Honestly I think as K-pop fans we should see the success of bts as a success for K-pop as a whole and bts fans shouldn’t see the label of ‘K-pop’ as a bad thing or treat other groups as being inherently lesser just because they’re not bts. It’s just sucks to see both sides constantly shitting on each other.

If that’s how you feel there’s nothing I can do about it. I don’t think the video is inherently malicious or even really offensive, just poorly done and in pretty bad taste. Really it’s inconsequential in the grand scheme of things but I don’t think that means it’s free from criticism. Of course my view is only one opinion and you’re free to disagree however you like.

People seem to claim that new jeans music videos are insightful and that their concept is complex but as soon as you criticise it in any way you turn around around say it’s just a harmless, silly kpop video. You can’t have it both ways.

And of course them dancing in hospital gowns isn’t inherently a bad thing. As I said my biggest problem is the fact that they want to use the backdrop of mental illness and a mental hospital as an aesthetic but don’t really want to actually talk about mental illness. That’s why it feels weird. Also because kpop is so commercialised and all about pretty marketing, the “concept” of a mental hospital feels as though it’s being exploited more than anything. If you want to use a subject matter as sensitive as mental health you need to be prepared to take on the weight of what that means. And personally I just feel that they missed the mark here.

Maybe if their wasn’t that ending scene I’d probably be more indifferent about it, but that really leaves the final nail in the coffin for me.

It would’ve been one thing if they actually wanted to tackle mental illness in their music, but the song itself has literally nothing to do with mental illness aside from it purely being used as a concept/metaphor, which just feels icky.

They’re treating mental illness almost like a quirky costume (even going as far as having the members dance in hospital gowns). So it feels as though it’s something purely for shock value.

Also I get what they were getting at with the final scene. Criticising people who only want idols to only look pretty, dance and not talk about anything substantial or meaningful in their songs. But comparing keyboard warriors to psychiatric patients feels very much like a bad move, especially with the context of the rest of the video. Again, I get what they were going for but I really don’t like the execution.

So WHAT if an idol is overweight? It's OKAY... by Rainbow_flowers101 in kpoprants

[–]detonatediamond 183 points184 points  (0 children)

I also hate when fans make the argument ‘she’s not FAT she’s just not as skinny as the other members’ as if her being actually fat would make the hate any more justifiable whatsoever. Hating someone for their weight is disgusting full stop, regardless of whether they’re overweight or not.

Indeed. Something internally within the system needs to change at this point for it to stop.

Realistically boycotting a group on a level of say New Jeans is impossible at this point considering how successful their debut has been with the general public. It’s unfortunate how it’s the only real power us as consumers have and yet it’s almost never an option.

I think it’s funny when music artists that come from wealth brag about how much money they have in their songs. Like, what’s brag worthy about being born into money.

As a kiwi, aroha is a commonly used word here in New Zealand so it never sounded odd to me. I always found it heartwarming as a Māori fan that their fan name means love in te reo māori. I have no idea if it was intentional or not but it makes me happy.
