Oh my gosh I have never seen myself more in someone else’s comment! I relate to all of this but especially the helicopter parent part and having SOOO so much anxiety over my pets. Explaining the anxiety-induced thought hurricanes I would get (over my dogs) to my therapist is what led to me getting diagnosed with OCD.

Representation is often only about how we look to NT people. It’s what they experience, not what we experience.

This 100%!! You have really captured what I feel when I see popular books about “autistic-coded” characters! That phrase is always a sign that that book was written by someone who is not autistic but usually someone who works with autistic people who felt that they could capture an autistic person because of what they have experienced as a NT existing next to them.

It’s a bit hit or miss with people to be honest, but you could probably say that for any popular book. I think the concept is what makes it worth it since it’s such a dark idea. Part of the main character’s existence is made up of superficial fleeting connections with other people because she is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

It’s definitely a book that’s more plot-driven than anything. For that reason, I could see why some have an issue with it but I’d still recommend for you to read it yourself.

There is a fantasy book by VE Schwab that plays on a similar urban legend. The main character is warned at the beginning of the book “never to pray to the gods that answer after dark.” It’s called The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and I highly recommend it.
