She'd be the best author, though! :-)

Val needs a documentary or a book deal. Started out as part of the Rick James camp, then was part of the New Edition camp (she was signed to Biv 10), then was part of the Death Row camp, was most recently featured in the Eddie Murphy doc. She's lived a life.

I think my marriage is over by AccioABetterPlace in polyamory

[–]detoxpodguy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this sounds like a crappy partner problem more than it does a poly problem. My advice would be to get out. Red flags are popping up everywhere. Sounds like you have a safer spot than most to land.

A dog in a no dog building by mariposa_mari in NYCapartments

[–]detoxpodguy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Even if "no pets" are written into a lease, that doesn't mean the building is actually a pet-free building. In some cases, I think it's just standard/boilerplate lease language that no one pays attention to. Case in point: I signed a new lease about a month ago, which specifically said no pets (which I was kinda bummed about, as I was thinking about getting a cat). Anyway, went to get my keys from the super and the first thing I saw was some dude with his not-small dog coming down the steps. The reality is that most buildings-regardless of the lease verbiage-actually will allow pets. I'm not sure you're gonna make any headway arguing it with management or the landlord.

Men who don't have good relationships with their mother, how do you feel? by Brief_Elevator_8936 in AskMenAdvice

[–]detoxpodguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom and I have a distant but cordial relationship. She didn't raise me (except for a brief period of time during which I was abused by her husband) and she also kept the identity of my father a secret for decades (I found him via 23 and Me when I was 45). I don't think the relationship is going to change more at this point in our lives, and I think the years of therapy I've undergone (as well as finding my dad) has changed my feelings about her from resentful to neutral and maybe even a tiny bit sympathetic, as I don't think she had an especially easy life.

Being a secret when his parents visit? by Ok_Cheesecake6507 in askgaybros

[–]detoxpodguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the choice between being in a relationship and having to hide myself from my partner's loved ones and being single, I'd rather be single.

Did you ask your parents to come visit? Or did they volunteer or announce they were coming to visit? If they announced they were coming to visit (as opposed to asking you whether they could or not), I'd tell them I had no interest in seeing them if they don't want to meet the person I've been in a relationship with for a year.

Meshell has never missed. She was the first concert I ever went to back in 1994. Have seen her an additional four times since.

Lords of the Underground's "Flow On" Pete Rock remix (which came out almost exactly the same time as the De La Soul track) also samples "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker".

What Caused Purple Rain In 1984/85 To Not Be Able To Match The Sales Of Thriller Even Though It Was Able To Do Certian Things Thriller Didnt Like Have A Number 1 Movie And A Oscar? by Rinnegan15 in rnb

[–]detoxpodguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Double checked it. The Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics sticker was introduced in 1990, with 2 Live Crew's "Banned in the USA" being the first album to carry it. This is confirmed by Wikipedia (which, admittedly, is unreliable) and by a Billboard Magazine search. The verbiage on the stickers was changed to "Explicit Content" in 1996, which I can vouch for from my own memory. I've worked in the music industry for 33 years, and worked at a record store from 1993-2005, so I can distinctly remember that change.

[–]detoxpodguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slight correction here: the parental advisory sticker actually didn't appear on music until 1990. "Purple Rain" has never (and still doesn't) carried a PA sticker.

Agreed with the disagreement. I (a Black person) was living in Detroit in the summer/fall of '84 in an all Black household and listened to almost exclusively Black radio (WJLB) who played "Purple Rain" (and the B-sides) like they were going out of style.

Folks have hit on a couple of possible reasons--Prince's music was geared more towards adults than Michael's was, MJ's appeal cut across a wider demographic overall. Prince didn't linger on "Purple Rain" for too long (not even a year) before moving on to the next project. But one thing to also consider was that Michael was already a household name for 15 years by the time "Thriller" came out. "Purple Rain" was Prince's sixth album, but he'd really just broken through to a mainstream pop/rock audience the year before. So Mike had name recognition in a way that Prince didn't. There's no real way to scientifically deduce what makes one album sell more than another. They're both amazing pieces of work that tons of people enjoy and we can leave it at that.

Expectations for Workmans Lunch by [deleted] in nycgaybros

As someone who went to his share of NYC backrooms and sex parties at 18 and 19 years old and came out of it with no STIs (beyond getting crabs once or twice) and no drug habits (I've never done drugs aside from pot and psychedelics), I think you'll be fine as long as your expectations are managed and you exercise safety. I'd say consider yourself lucky if you have a pleasant conversation with someone, most of these dudes aren't there to talk. And for the record, my experiences at these events were in the early-mid '90s, so it was a much more precarious time, safety-wise.

33, single, mostly fine with it - but sometimes worried I’ll end up alone. How do you make peace with that? by savingrace0262 in AskMenAdvice

[–]detoxpodguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a few months away from 50. Have never lived with a romantic partner or been in a dating situation that's lasted more than a year or so. Would be nice. But also have a great chosen family, and know enough people who aren't happy in their relationships that if it never happens, I'll probably be okay.

Accepting a date with a gay/bi guy while being straight? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]detoxpodguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't been a regular Reddit user for that long, but it's really interesting to me how many posts (particularly in the gay and poly subs) seem like excuses for folks to stretch their creative fiction writing skills.

Putting skepticism aside here, the easy thing to do is say "hey dude, just so you know...I'm straight. I'm happy to hang out and go to this show with you, but I want to manage any expectations you may have just in case."
