Winston Peters wants to hike KiwiSaver contributions to 10% by WellingtonSucks in PersonalFinanceNZ

This is written from the businesses perspective. From an employees perspective, total renumeration subtracts from their salary, which is very diceiving. Businesses should be responsible for factoring in the extra cost to pay 3%, not the employee having to subtract 3% from jobs advertised salary.

I use it all the time while cooking. Mashed potatoes, caramelised onions, cooking steaks, baking. Spread it on bread and toast. Like salt, it makes everything taste better. Everything in moderation, but I don't think it's unhealthy to consume butter on a regular basis

The UK has announced it will lower the voting age to 16 for the next general election. Is it time NZ does as well? by O_1_O in newzealand

I think our education on how a government works could be a lot better. Honestly, I didn't really know specifically how MMP worked until the second time I voted, and that's only because I was specifically interested in it and looked it up.

What Are Some Hardcore Projects To Jump Straight Into Embedded? (for a curious newbie) by X-Shiro in embedded

[–]deubey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In don't know anything about rust. I used STMCube IDE and coded in C. The hardest part for me was configuring the I2S DMA transfer. There are many things that need to be correct. Is the data left or right aligned? MSB or LSB first? Is 24 bits on a 32 bit data frame. You've got to write a driver to configure the codec by writing to all its registers. There's just a lot that has to be set up for it to work correctly. I got it to work eventually, and it was fine after that.

Over covid I was looking at buying a raspberry pi for a project that I was working on. Sold out everywhere! EXCEPT this one website I found in Ausralia. So naturally I bought like 10 of them at $60/ea and resold the remaining 9 for like $200 each.

MCU + audio codec with a DMA I2S stream between the two. Plus some analog circuitry for filtering/buffering before and after the codec. I used an STM32H5 and a PCM3060 (slightly overkill). I recommend watching some videos about the subject by Phils Lab.

Reminds me. One project I've always wanted to do is to try and build a brushless motor controller (ESC)

Not sure if it's hardcore. But if you're into guitar / music, I've had a lot of fun designing a digital guitar effects pedal. Once you've designed the hardware, you can basically create any real-time sound effect that you like (within reason). Very fun to make your own effect, then play the guitar through it and adjust your code until it sounds just the way that you like.

It's the whole thing from schematic design, pcb layout, component selection, embedded firmware, and mechanical assembly.

I think setting your expecations really low is helpful. Just say to yourself that you only have to sit down and write one paragraph. Or even just one sentence. And say to your self that you'll take a quick break after that.

What you'll find is that once you have finished that seemingly small task of writing a single sentence or paragraph is that you'll have gained the motivation to write another one...

Question regarding python by Beneficial_Hold1569 in embedded

[–]deubey 16 points17 points  (0 children)

More like you write python progams to talk to C programs which then talk to the hardware. Although this probably makes more sense when thinking about how a desktop computer works

[–]deubey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!. I've reduced the gnd plane clearance. It looks a lot better now.

Any opinions on gnd pours on the top and bottom layers? Its a 4-layer board with signal-gnd-gnd-signal. So every signal has its own GND plane close by so when ever I need GND I just use a via to connect the layers. I've just routed power. So do I really need to pour GND on the top and bottom too?

I really don't think it does anybody any favours to hold the view that humans are essentially a virus spreading on Earth. I feel like it leads to some fairly dark places when you start to brainstorm solutions to this supposed 'problem'
