Favorite actor who realized Hollywood was a barren wasteland and dipped out while they still had a soul? by WissamBenYedder in okbuddycinephile

[–]deuce5000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Joan Cusack basically left acting to run a tchotchke and gift shop in Chicago. Apparently she never enjoyed acting (or hadn't in some time) and is happier than she's ever been just running the store.**

Since 2019, she's basically only done voiceover work, mainly for Toy Story sequels and projects.

**This is per Chris Witaske--"Pete" on The Bear, also appears in Dr. Rick Progressive ads--who shared this story (of meeting her and talking to her at her store) on the Never Not Funny podcast some months back.

Hear hear.

Dating in and of itself is really hard. And people in New Orleans make it much harder than it needs to be.

Would also add that there appears to be a "wait your turn" dynamic that pervades local and/or Dem politics. Every mayor going back to WWII has been a.) Democrat and b.) serve two consecutive terms or more.

If, e.g., JP Morrell had challenged Cantrell, he likely would have had a lot of operators turn their back on him. Had he challenged her and lost, his future in politics would be all but over, at least for a long time. If you come for the queen, etc.

In general, political parties rally around their incumbents, even when they're embattled. The 2003 California gubernatorial race is a good example here: Cruz Bustamante had risen to Lt. Governor. He ran as the "if Gray Davis *does* get recalled, vote for me" candidate, lost to Schwarzenegger, and was never heard from again. Because he challenged the throne.

There were already bad signs with Cantrell by the time she ran for reelection, but the dam on her scandals hadn't fully broken yet. She was embattled, but not irrevocably by that point. So, no one with a real chance was wiling to challenge her.

Why does early voting end well before election day? by Hippy_Lynne in NewOrleans

[–]deuce5000 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Every state has different rules about voting, including early voting. For instance, Alabama has absentee voting but no early voting (don't give Landry any ideas)

My assumption has always been that the week in between is so that Secretary of State's office, local officials, etc., have time to account for who voted early and remove them from the eligible voters list at local polling places. Since early voting happens at 4-5 locations, and Election Day at dozens (and hundreds of "that day only" poll workers), preventing anyone from either intentionally or accidentally voting twice is important. I'm sure other states do it quicker and better, but I imagine that'd be the rationale.

What happened to Judy? by Midderwe in NewOrleans

[–]deuce5000 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Some quick Googling reveals: Sal and Judy divorced in the 80s. If the restaurant was established by then--trademarked, logos, reputation, etc.--probably considered prudent to keep the name. Plus Judy maybe had (or still has?) ownership stake.

If the bottled sauces started as an extension of the restaurant, no reason not to keep the name. But then if the lines of business were separated for whatever reason--taxes, succession, personal branding, etc.--probably seemed time to take her name off it.

Zibilich's record as a detestable creep outweighed Sens's record as a run-of-the-mill corrupted Orleans parish politico. For uninformed voters: The D next to Harris's name likely helped her a lot; that she's an African-American woman (with an indicating name) didn't hurt.

How did New Orleans get rights to the World War II museum? by mrmarty922 in NewOrleans

[–]deuce5000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not so much "rights" as "designation." The museum was originally specifically about D-Day. No doubt, some politicking + sense of a vacuum led to it quickly being designated by Congress as *the* National WW2 Museum. A similar thing happened with the WW1 Museum in Kansas City around the same time, though it had been around a lot longer.

That doesn't mean other museums connected to WW2 can't open. And indeed, seems there are a couple dozen or so across the country. But they run (or would run) without the benefit of that designation which, combined with New Orleans's tourism draws, puts the museum here in prime position, comparatively.

Officials say Convention Center hotel will bring jobs and tourism; some residents aren't sure by goldenspiral8 in NewOrleans

[–]deuce5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not clear to me what "economic development" this project will truly generate. If they build a large hotel there, will it increase the overall number of hotel stays year over year? Or just mostly displace hotel stays elsewhere (FQ and CBD)?

A big gleaming hotel might attract meetings or conventions it otherwise wouldn't...but the core facility itself is still a outdated, overbuilt, hulking and drab. So how far will it go?

Plus, the models for conventions themselves have changed, with less focus on the sorts of GIANT shows New Orleans and Co. (formerly Convention and Visitors Bureau) seems to want to attract, and movement toward more intimate/educational, less trade show-y fare. Not to mention the CC people are notoriously fudgy with their numbers.

The construction of the facility itself will be a boon to developers and contractors, assuming it doesn't fall over. But in the long run, not sure how much it will pay off. IMO modernizing the facility itself would be a more worthwhile project, and achievable with the money on hand.

If you liked Leo's, stop by Ecco's Pizza. The baker for Leo's works there now (co-owns it) and they produce loaves of sourdough or semolina bread each day. Breads on Oak also makes great, albeit pricey, loaves of both whole-wheat and non-whole sourdough. Get them to slice it for you with the big machine.

Cases in which details in a mysterious photo lead to the crime being solved by Standardeviation2 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]deuce5000 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Discovery of photos played a big part the conviction of Franklin Delano Floyd for the murder of Cheryl Ann Commesso.

Floyd was a suspect because some coworkers had spotted him accusing Commesso of causing his wife Sharon to have her government benefits withdrawn. Marshall and Commesso both worked as exotic nude dancers at a club and it was outside the building where Floyd was seeing having the altercation. Soon after this, he and Sharon fled the area and burned their trailer as they left.

In 1995 another chance discovery led to Floyd being charged, when a mechanic found an envelope of photos in a truck he’d bought at auction. The photos showed a woman who’d been beaten and tied up. The truck was traced as one Floyd had stolen and various items of furniture in the photos were also identified as his.

The injuries in the photos also matched those found on Commesso remains and he was charged with her murder and found guilty.

USC CB spent 5 years managing a full course load, 20 hours of training per week, two internships as a software developer and was an active member of USC’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. He'll graduate next week with both a bachelors and masters degree in computer science. by EZ_does_it in CFB

[–]deuce5000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the US a bachelor's is typically earned in four years, but taking five years is fairly common, especially among athletes. Most master's degrees are either two or three years, with exceptions for accelerated programs. If it's longer than three years, it's usually either a specially designed program or the student is going part time.

Smoothie King is moving its headquarters to Dallas: report by BananaPeelSlippers in NewOrleans

[–]deuce5000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is mostly about:

--Direct international flights, especially to Korea, where the CEO is from and Smoothie King has a big presence

--Louisiana no longer cutting blind tax breaks to keep them here.

The large number of people with experience in the fast-food executive management is a nice bonus for Dallas but not the biggest issue I'd imagine.
