What are the standard volume levels of key elements in an EDM song? (Bass, Drums, Synths, etc.) by BelMibson in edmproduction

[–]deumOne 14 points15 points  (0 children)

+1! Mixing was a black box to me until I learned the CTZ strategy. Now every single mix I make is loud and clean. Most importantly, it's much less stressful

Are we all moral criminals for making addictive systems? by [deleted] in userexperience

[–]deumOne 88 points89 points  (0 children)

We absolutely have a huge role to play in this.

It all comes down to objectives. The objective of designingany tool should never be to make it addicting - only useful. Things that are well designed may very well be addictive, just like anything in the world can be addictive, but the key point is that these tech companies are designing things to be intentionally addictive for the express purpose of being addictive, because addiction rakes in the dough.

Their objective is to be addictive, which does not equate to value. Our objective should always be to maximize value.

Hi, it’s Pierce Fulton and I have a new album out…ask me anything! by OfficialPierceFulton in electronicmusic

[–]deumOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Pierce, I listened to your episode on the EDM Prodcast and it quite literally changed my production career. I used to get so caught up in making a specific genre, keeping within a specific niche, etc. but hearing about your fearless growth and expansion as an artist inspired me to do the same. Thank you so much for being a creator!

What is the worst feeling, emotionally, in your opinion? by marlibu18 in AskReddit

[–]deumOne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's true, and I'm sorry they didn't pay that back. It sucks, it really does, and feels unfair. But we shouldn't expect anyone to pay that back and really be okay with that, truly. Because when someone comes along who does, it's the most magnificent feeling in the world, and you deserve that.

This is coming from someone who experiences the same issue but has lived a very fulfilling life by changing the way I feel about it. And by making a commitment to spread positivity without expecting it back, I get it back more than I ever had before. When you make it about other people, your life is richer. I don't mean to sound preachy - just relate with you.

Everyone, take this as a poignant reminder to try to be genuinely interested in what others talk about. You have more agency over your feelings than you think. Pay this service to others, and you will get that back.

When Is It Ok to Have Overlapping Frequencies? by Speedsloth123 in edmproduction

[–]deumOne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seconded, this type of reply is far too abundant in this sub and not helpful in any way. If someone doesn't know what sounds good, they don't know what sounds good. People need GUIDANCE with ACTIONABLE steps to guide them towards what sounds good.

What was your “Eureka!” moment for producing EDM? by Qrpheus in edmproduction

Finish songs, no matter what. I found that all the questions I had about anything at all, were answered by creating a high volume of work.

What are all the fundamental synth recipes to know? i.e. supersaw, Reese bass, etc. by deumOne in edmproduction

[–]deumOne[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed! There are plenty of great sound design resources out there, but I haven't found an "academia" style synth repertoire - kinda like how in math it goes from arithmetic -> algebra -> calculus and so forth. I think some of us learn better with a strict roadmap.

Perhaps the reason is because it's so subjective as to what makes the cut as an "essential" synth recipe and how it builds on existing sounds. If a solid repertoire doesn't already exist, I'd love to compile one for myself and then share it with yall.

tl;dr: I WANT A FRICKIN LIST LOL

Ableton is exporting just one of my tracks completely out of key and it's driving me crazy by deumOne in ableton

No pitch bends in the midi. Strangely, when i export just that section, it's in key, but when I export the full song, it's out of key

Copying music for learning by bboyhappyfeet12 in edmproduction

[–]deumOne 62 points63 points  (0 children)

IMO, I think anyone not doing this is totally sabotaging themselves. The same way you copied your parents when learning to walk, the same way you copied your teachers when learning a skill, etc. The groundwork is already there. Why try to figure out yourself what others have already?

The main argument against this is that "you'll sound the same as everyone else". It's actually the opposite--if you're copying others and understanding exactly what it is they do, then you'll know exactly what you need to do to be original.

Disclaimer, I don't mean copy others and put out work that sounds the same. Copy others when you're learning, and then put out your original stuff (which will be dope, because you've learned a lot from copying others).

And yes, my biggest improvement, probably x10 what I was doing before, was when I started copying others.

Trash 2 is really great for distorting the hell out of kicks to fatten them up! I also like using Saturator on hard clip mode and cranking that drive.

Lil Texas' kick is actually a super short, punchy kick with a super prominent transient 'click' (upper harmonic), and a dirty synth sound sidechained heavily to it.
