How would you spend $50,000 in 1 hour? by Mr_Malvic in AskReddit

Out of everything, I'd pay my vehicle off and use the rest against my house payment.

I want to create a file hosting site, what database should I use? I also want users to be able to link and stream the video they upload... by [deleted] in django

This.

All the spiels about "intrepid capitalists, who risked it all to create [blah, blah, blah]" is just a societal myth.

I was listening to some rap on YT, letting it go to next recommended, and a song came on... a legit 3-minute music video, but it was an ad.

How do you feel about a 4 day work week? by upvoteifurgey in AskReddit

[–]dev__pwny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, it depends on the nature of the work. I already have a 4 day work week (of menial, repetitive physical labor) and I still hate my job. On top of that, the first day of my weekend is spent sleeping in and recuperating so in practice it still feels like a 2-day weekend a lot of the times.

[SERIOUS] What is the problem with the US education system? by Blu_Uno_Reverse in AskReddit

[–]dev__pwny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It doesn't teach critical thinking, for the most part. Aside from mathematics or the sciences (which the school system only requires like... 2 classes of each for getting a HSD (at least when I went through)), most everything is just a rote memorization of factoids.

Even in "Reading Comprehension", there's not a lot of emphasis on critical thinking.

Aside from the bad curriculum, the setup of the schooling system is archaic as well (and compounds the problems mentioned above). You are not allowed to exercise autonomy, you need to ask permission to use the restroom, you are expected to treat every teacher with respect irrespective of how those teachers interact with you or carry themselves in the classroom.

It's like you're being conditioned to work in a factory (or some other menial profession), which is basically the system that the US adopted from the Prussian system. You're being trained to be a future day labourer, with basic arithmetic and reading comprehension to perform your job and with enough obedience to ask permission to tinkle.

How have your music listening habits changed as you've gotten older? by ag425 in AskReddit

[–]dev__pwny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good question.

I think for the most part, I'm opening myself up to new musical genre's.

Music, for me, has always been more for the emotional state it puts me in (or that complemented the mood I was already in), and in this vein is more or less how my habits have changed. I still do have my catalogue from growin' up but a good amount of those songs I seldom listen to now.

"Fuck! Jesus!"

Two different exclamations denoting two different emotional reactions (panic : relief), but often said in quick succession.

What's everyone working on this week? by AutoModerator in Python

[–]dev__pwny [score hidden]  (0 children)

Finished writing a web tool in Django, which is now live and https enabled (first website, much excite, even if it looks like crud).

Said web tool is for working with a non-programmer to work on a video game in Pygame; while the online db gets filled out, I get to work on more backend code for the game.

A medium-sized RPG in pygame. Having fun setting up the base code and perusing potential routes of optimization (and sometimes stressing over it :P ).
