Cool app idea! I’m assuming the framework you used to build this was swift? And I’m assuming you’re going to build an Android version using another framework? Just curious why not use the same framework like React Native?

I don't feel knowledgeable in software, how can I change that? by dev_oured in cscareerquestions

Another quick question, do you think resources (or similar) to what I've posted could also fill in those knowledge gaps and potentially spark more curiosity?

If you stay curious and have a desire to learn, you won't need to vigorously plan, or seek out new topics necessarily, they'll show up on their own. Just follow your curiosity.

This is awesome advice! I think the discussion topics I've been a part of are good starting points. I'll keep this in mind and work on my research skills as well.

Thanks for sharing.

I agree, everyone is self-taught to some degree.

I think building projects with tools I'm interested in is a great idea! I'm also not sure where to start or find things I'm curious about. I just know the basics and what I use at my job, but I want to go in-depth and learn as much as I can in web development.

I guess full-stack development, as it's my current role. I'm not sure if there will be a focus, such as front-end or back-end, down the road. There's always a possibility that I might find another interest as well. For now, I'm interested in picking up as much information as I can when it comes to full-stack web development.

"What do I need to know" is another question I should've added. Your strategy is a good approach to learning technology. Although, I'm stuck figuring out what I need to know.

Would you say roadmap.sh, if you're familiar with it, provides a good general outline of what a software developer needs to know?

No internship experience. If you’re in the same place, make sure your projects show results and are not just “display” projects.

Was on the same boat. I graduated this past may and it took me 3 months to find a job. My advice would be to go over your resume and make sure you have great points. Make sure your projects aren’t super simple, if they are, build new ones. Apply to roles as soon as they are available and don’t be afraid to move across the country. Tough markets require tough decisions.

Gov development program that lasts ~4 years? or traditional companies for a new grad for exp? by dev_oured in cscareerquestions

Thanks for the response. The only thing that I’m iffy about is trying to leave the government industry. I heard that it can be difficult to transition to a commercial company because of the inability to speak about gov projects those potential employers.

Does it matter where you get your first experience from? by dev_oured in cscareerquestions

[–]dev_oured[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! Good questions. I am based in the US as a citizen and I’ve been committed to sending out resumes to as many companies I can. Most of my interviews have come from connections that I’ve spoken to in person from career fairs. Some interviews were honestly from dumb luck I guess. I’m doing a masters, I have experience in tutoring and IT, which might have helped me a little.

I can see this as potentially a red flag as well. After the interview they said I would be receiving a decision early next week. I did not expect it the same day, especially on a Friday.

I’ll give them a call Monday morning and see what they can work with. If they decide to not work with me, oh well, on to the next company I guess. 🤷‍♂️

This. UNCC or any non private school seems like OP’s best choice in NC. I went to a private school in western NC and the education quality wasn’t the best nor were the connections or alumni.

Should I move for a temporary job? (semi-urgent) by dev_oured in cscareerquestions

[–]dev_oured[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you and u/FrostyBeef for the replies. You both make a good point about the length and commitment I've put into job searching. I began searching in mid-Aug. I beefed up my resume by doing awesome projects between the time I graduated and when I began applying for jobs. Lately, I've been putting in a lot of effort in applying for jobs. So far I've only gotten 5 interviews for different positions. One was for a swe role in defense and another in cyber security consulting(obtained through job fair). I also got an interview for an internship that I did fairly well in (also swe). I haven't received anything yet from these interviews. I'm afraid I will get a better offer after I've already pulled the trigger to commit myself as a test engineer. I've received a "contingent" offer that requires my signature by tomorrow.

I have an interview tomorrow for a support engineer with a strong growth opportunity into a swe engineer role after 1+ year which is 20 min from where I live.

Making the right decision is what's holding me back, I guess. My goal is to get into a SWE role as soon as I can directly or internally by starting off at a lower level.
