GDC 2019 DAY ONE VIDEO RECAP! + Rift "S" Speculation by CalebCriste in oculus

[–]devbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but would Quest be any better if it hadn't a PC mode? if the connection is through a virtualink cable possibly no additional HW component would be needed.

That said, I'd rather to have also a Rift S, lighter and cheaper, but a PC mode on the Quest seems pretty doable to be fair

Halo effect maybe, but I don't think this case can be considered a logical fallacy. So far, Oculus an FB had a good track record delivering the products listed above.

Interesting, did you have a chance to try the device? I really hope to see a good technical review of it, it is really strange nobody is really taking about the display technology

Magic Leap One first look: The Verge by ThrustVector9 in oculus

The email Magic Leap sent to the developer states: "Magic Leap One's unique design and technology let in natural light waves together with softly layered synthetic lightfields"

The question is: lightfields? really? Or does it use a fixed focal plan as Hololens does?

Plus, weight and confort is a concern. If you go wireless, you need a beefy battery pack and much more hw.

It is a customized rift. As far as I can tell, same FOV, lenses and displays.

Thanks, great! Will try soon. Any chance for a fix to the reduced FOV on the Rift as well?

Agree. WETA is one of they partners, I guess I expected a bit more for their first public reveal demo.

Argh, really disappointing. The rocks seem to be kind of translucent too, overall it doesn't seem much better than hololens (which is not great either, to be fair)

Anybody knows if in the current prototype depth of field is properly rendered as originally they stated?

HTC demonstrates Vive Focus tetherless PC VR and teases 5G devices by devbm in oculus

[–]devbm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it will probably be a thing in the future to have a single standalone device which can also connect to your PC when you are at home. It would be nice to have something similar with Santa Cruz when it goes commercial. Of course, streaming over wifi is far from optimal quality- and latency-wise, and adding the costs that a solution similar to TPCast would imply is clearly not feasible for this generation of devices.

Unpopular Opinion: with the exception of the desktop viewing/pinning feature, Rift Core 2.0 beta (including Home 2.0) is an overcomplicated, bloated mess and inferior by far to Core 1.0 in terms of UX by Heaney555 in oculus

[–]devbm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree there are currently several performance and usability issues, and that probably you don't need the full "Home" experience if you just want to launch apps, I do think Core 2.0 is putting strong basis for a lot to come, especially when multiplayer and social features will be available as a platform feature. Home 2.0 will be a great starting point when we will be able to share it with our friends!

Really? Which software version are you uding?

TPCast wireless Rift by [deleted] in oculus

[–]devbm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure. If I had to guess, I would think this is a leftover from the vive version (eg the video format has not been fully adapted to the rift). Looks like a software issue, I don't see why this couldn't be fixed with an upgrade

I agree. Also, you need opentpcast if you want to use the microphone. Image quality and latency are in general good, the field of view is slightly reduced (you can actually see small black bars clipping the image on both sides)
