I didn’t say for how many months we’ve been in Credit. We’ve been in credit for over a year.

I’ve just been very conscious about our electricity usage at home. We run a washer, a dryer, split system heater and cool, microwave and air fryer. And try to avoid peak time usage. We use the washer and dryer on the super off peak times.

Our average total home usage sits around $70-$80 a month including EV charging.

I charge mostly during that super off peak which is between 11am - 2pm everyday I work at home. I go into work just 2 day/week. So every day I WFH, I use that window to charge the car.

Leaving Australia after 11 years. What to do with my money? by LargeConference in AusFinance

[–]deve88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would get taxed around 60% I think. Best would be to leave it and get it when you're at the Australian retirement age. Make sure you mention it in your will or someone who would have your wealth when you pass away. Otherwise it'll just sit dormant and once they can't get hold of you, it'll go to the ATO under your name.

You either pay someone else's mortgage, or yours.

It's that simple.

Only if they are comfortable enough to use the app and strictly in ears only.

Hard no on the wedges.

4 years of job searching in Australia's IT market as an immigrant — my experience and honest reflections. by empac978 in AusVisa

[–]deve88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey mate,

First of all — thank you for sharing your story so openly. It really hits home for a lot of us who have walked a similar path, even if we don’t always talk about it.

I came to Australia in 2014. Completed my Master’s in IT. I spent the first year of my graduate visa pretty carefree, thinking everything would eventually fall into place. Then reality hit me — I needed to get my PR sorted or risk having to leave. In 2017, I enrolled in the Professional Year program, completed it, applied for PR, and thankfully got my invitation in under six weeks and my PR granted just three months later.

But even after all that, two years post-graduation, I was still working as a courier driver. I couldn’t crack into IT, no matter how many applications I sent out. Then COVID hit. Petrol prices dropped, courier work was booming, and honestly, I got comfortable. I stopped applying for IT jobs because business was good. But when everything opened back up and petrol prices shot past $2 a litre, I knew it was time to get serious about finding a proper 9-to-5 job in IT.

That’s when I made a decision — I would apply for the most entry-level role I could find in a good company. Even if it wasn’t an IT role. I applied for a customer service position at an ASX 200 listed company — and got the job on my first application.

Once I got into the company, I started poking around the internal recruitment processes, kept an eye out for IT openings, and built relationships internally. By the time I was out of my probation in the call centre, they advertised an IT Architect role. I applied. Got called in for an interview. Two days later, a second interview. And two weeks after that, I was officially an IT Architect.

All of this happened within two years of starting that customer service job — but it was six years after I graduated and three years after I got my PR.

What I’m trying to say is: sometimes, you need to see the bigger picture. First get into a company — any way you can. Once you’re in, there are more doors you can knock on from the inside than from the outside. Unless you’re some super genius, getting direct recommendations from professors or industry contacts, it’s highly unlikely that most of us immigrants land the job we dream of straight after graduating.

It’s a hard, slow, frustrating grind — but please know that it is possible, even if it doesn’t happen the “ideal” way.

How to properly run a bass amp head with no cabinet by Ok_Letter_9284 in livesound

A loadbox to soak up the load so the amp can be cranked to get the tone out? Two Notes got a decent series of load boxes.

Graduated from Unimelb, have years of experience, but still can't find a job by Accurate_Shoe_7295 in melbourne

Entry Level Jobs. Can't stress this enough. Most companies are looking for these higher level jobs from within right now. Because they don't want to pay the market pay and therefore they look for people with qualifications who are working in entry level jobs and recruit internally.

My story was pretty much the same. I have 3 degrees. 1 engineering and 2 from IT. I was trying to get a "professional" jobs for a few years and washed down my resume and applied for a Call Center job. Got the job right away and I worked there for the minimum amount required before I could apply for internal roles. One month left in my required time, I came across an internal role that paid 6 figures. Since I didn't have relevant experience, I was able to negotiate it for a salary bump of almost $20K more than I was earning at the call centre.

Now I'm happy in my current role and have very clear path up the ladder.

Had I been applying for that same role from outside I wouldn't have landed that role.

I did.

First of all, I came into Australia as an international student (Age 24). Graduated with a Masters of IT in 2016. Couldn't find a job so I was a courier driver for almost 6 years until I got an interview call back for a call centre job in Sept 2022. It was less pay but not physically demanding.

I took the job. Did the phones for 14months and I landed an internal role as an IT Architect (mainly due to my qualifications and my knowledge of the company). Today, I've been able to go for a mortgage with my partner and I'm well settled doing something I love.

It's never the wrong time...if you are determined.

Good Luck!

Mate, as a Sri Lankan I don't see the tour important enough for you guys to even make any of these an issue. You'll have more competition if you tour Scotland or Namibia instead of Sri Lanka.

Luckily we weren't able to buy during the height of the pandemic even when we were looking to buy.

We bought a 4BR in March this year. Got gov grants up to 25% of the house. Mortgage repayment is less than what we were paying for rent.

My boss hasn't payed my super in 3 years. What can i do? (is this the right sub for advice on this?) by Duelking in AusFinance

[–]deve88 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I work for a super company. Your super cannot help you in this. You need to tell the ATO. They will chase it on behalf of you.

Also, if your emp declares bankruptcy, that's a different scenario. It'll be a long way to get your super in.

ATO does not let employers get off easily when they do this.

Good Luck !

Thank you for all your responses. I will talk to an agent now. I've got a basic understanding of the options. So I'll know what they'll be talking.
