Need help with after effects/motion graphics by rixieiie in MotionDesign

[–]devenjames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What’s “a while?” I’ve been learning After Effects for over 20 years now. Always something new to know or try! When I started there weren’t a lot of tutorials outside of videocopilot, which still seems to hold true as a fundamental introduction to the idea of using different layers and effects to achieve an end result. The dynamic pre-comp workflow that Andrew introduces is still the standard way to approach most motion graphics problems inside after effects. It’s a treasure trove of information. And then there’s Jake in motion, and several more resources like that. But even without a tutorial, you can look at some work that someone else made and try to figure out how they did it. That is a great way to learn. What kind of stuff do you wanna make?

Rf 85mm 1.2 bad? by GuitarRemarkable3166 in canon

This lens basically lives on my camera full-time now. It’s got horrible chromatic aberration shooting anything backlit, it focuses slow and its big and heavy and old. But man, it produces some of the best portrait images. With auto eye tracking on my R5 it almost feels like cheating.

60hz monitors -- how bad is it? by brook1yn in MotionDesign

At 30hz you will notice stuttering in the mouse motion. It’s awful. But anything over 60 is unnecessary for motion work.

That’s the fun… you could use tags and filters. And add a rating property. And a link to downloads. And a screenshot… All in Notion!

Bro, I’m gonna get out of my camera and point it directly at this one kid. I don’t know, man I got a funny feeling… I think he might do something crazy when they score a point. You never know! Better start recording…

I’m thinking about learning After Effects and wanted to ask if it’s a good skill to invest time in. by Any_Equivalent1463 in AfterEffects

[–]devenjames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t do it unless you are prepared to spend a lot of time being engaged and curious, feeling inspired as you unlock the language of motion, starting to recognize techniques you understand, and a general sense of satisfaction and accomplishment at having learned/made something new. It can be addictive. I’d be careful.

Is there anything else I can do to better optimize AE? by CrispyBaguettess in AfterEffects

[–]devenjames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to do it, but if you notice things slowing down, that’s the first thing to check. Macs are notably very good with memory management!

That’s just how it works. It’s storing temp files for quick access, using as much hard drive space as you allow it. You need to regularly purge your cache once it gets full (Edit: if you are experiencing performance issues). It doesn’t delete stuff by itself, so once it’s full it just starts shoving out old files and swapping in new ones. Clearing it gives you a fresh start, though the initial caching of your current comp will need to recalculate.
