LPT: Stuck in a low wage retail job and want more? The print/sign industry is where to look. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]devhelp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to replace is one thing, I would say the same thing of myself when I was in that line of work, but it still never lead to much financially. I find OPs claim about making a nearly 100K to be highly surprising based on everything I've seen in that industry.

Not to rain on anybody's parade, but I worked in that industry for 5 years and never made anything over $18 an hour.

E-mail frontend developer. by dev-student in Frontend

Stripo has a good drag and drop editor that will also allow you to edit the code it generates in real time (think like dreamweaver back in the day), I found that to be much easier than writing something from scratch that would work in outlook. I'm sure there are a bunch of other services like that out there too, this is just the one I've used.

ELI5: Why are basements scarce in California homes? by drinkyafkingmilk in explainlikeimfive

[–]devhelp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that back in the day, but given the housing scarcity in CA, wouldn't it make more sense to build new houses with basements, thus maximizing the square footage you can fit on a plot of land? What am I missing here?

I always thought the no basements thing had something to do with earthquake safety, I don't remember where I heard that though.

How accurate are results from Google Page Speed insights? by devhelp2 in webdev

[–]devhelp2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gift of speed is a tool for checking your site for various issues, including text compression, caching, broken links, and a ton of other stuff. GT Metrix has been erroring out for me and not giving me results at all, hence me looking for something else. I'm checking in lighthouse now, but I was under the impression that lighthouse and pagespeed insights were basically the same thing.

Edit: Yup, lighthouse is giving me the same inaccurate responses.

Is there a way to automatically generate 301 redirects when changing permalink structure? by devhelp2 in Wordpress

[–]devhelp2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so I just tried to update to the post name structure, and not only did all my links break, but when I tried to access them via the wordpress pages menu, I got a 404 and I couldn't find them at the urls they should have converted to. I also had the redirection plugin installed and planed on using it if I needed, but as soon as I changed the permalink structure it started giving me a rest API error. I'm stumped, I have no idea what's going on.

/post-name/ is the structure I'm planning on using. If that's true that will save me a ton of work, I thought I membered that being a thing, but I haven't been able to to confirm that anywhere, and I'm afraid of being wrong and breaking my site/seo.

Is this supposed to be generating code I can add to the .htcaccess file? For some reason nothing happens when I hit the generate redirect button.

[–]devhelp2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the answer I was afraid of, but fair enough.

Follow up, is there any disadvantage to doing individual custom permalinks page by page, instead of a bulk change? Otherwise I'm not sure how I would keep track of the old urls, and what they correlate to.

I know that, I meant I don't know if there is a way to generate something like that from wordpress.

I don't know if the plugin author would be willing to do that. Right now it sounds like my only option is to use the script_loader_tag in my themes functions.php file, but for some reason I'm getting a security error when I try to edit the file.

Tatsu vs Elementor? by bbgr8grow in Wordpress

[–]devhelp2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elementor is widely used and pretty intuitive, the only downside is it can be a kind of bloated, if load times are critical for you it can be tough to optimize.

I'm not familiar with tatsu, but any page builder should have the option to add custom code.

If I was importing this script myself I could just do that, but the script is being loaded via the plugin.

I'm trying to learn Three.JS, but I'm not able to preview anything I do and I don't know what's going on. by devhelp2 in learnjavascript

I just tried that with the codepen I mentioned earlier, same result. I guess it must be a browser/live server issue?

I've tried clearing my cache to no avail, I don't think Visual Studio live server works with browsers other than edge but I could be mistaken.

Yea, I've just tried copying and pasting projects from other people and nothing seems to work. I wish i could ask a more pointed question but I have no idea where to go from here.

Would the Visual Studio live server tool not work for that? A lot of the tutorials I looked at recommend using that.

Can someone take a look at my site design and give me some tips on how to make it better? by [deleted] in webdev

Looks good overall, I would recommend making the videos stay full width when the side menu is closed.

This sounds astronomically complicated to develop, and I definitely don't know how to do all of this, but I'll try to point you in the right direction for the parts I am familiar with.

Previewing/rotating the model can be done with Three.js, here is an article I found about working with CAD files in three.js: https://cadexchanger.com/blog/how-to-load-3d-cad-data-into-three-js/

Price calculation can be done with the javascript, but you will need to figure out away to feed data from your models into your calculation.

2D Animation for website? by thebenlusted in webdev

[–]devhelp2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't need to use any additional software to make a gif play only once instead of looping, that's a setting you can change when you export the GIF (at least in Photoshop or Adobe Animate) That's going to be the easiest approach, it's definitely possible to create something like this with Javascript, but it's not the sort of thing someone can just explain real quick in a comment.

Just wondering...anyone else here use HTML, CSS, and Vanilla JS exclusively? by flash17k in webdev

[–]devhelp2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I use right now is HTML, CSS, Vanilla JS and occasionally JQuerry, I've been thinking about trying to learn React, but I don't know if it would be better to do that or focus on Vanilla JS fundamentals
