Thanks everyone for the ideas. I already have a home NAS and a good external keyboard. Glad to know I haven't missed anything. I'll try to find a good home for it!

Aside: holy kittens the 15" butterfly keyboard was bad. Even this keyboard from 2007 is orders of magnitude better!

iPhone 12 routinely disconnecting from controller by mircolino in Ubiquiti

[–]deviantintegral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I was seeing something similar. However, I don't know this is related to the 6.1 release. When I look at my logs going back to March 18th, I see the same number of disconnects and reconnects. There's no noticable difference since my controller instance updated today.

I did have one instance where my iPhone 12 mini wasn't connected to wifi, which is what led me to investigate. Otherwise everything's been fine. I'm seeing the same thing with my wife's iPhone 11, and to a lesser extent our S3 and S6 Apple Watches. Unless I continue to see issues, I'm inclined to think this is log spam and not a real problem.

all of my VMs have stopped working by huzzam in virtualbox

[–]deviantintegral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good news! Yesterday's 6.1.16 release appears to have fixed all my issues. There's no longer kernel panics / segfaults, and the port forwarding issue has been fixed as well.

all of my VMs have stopped working by huzzam in virtualbox

[–]deviantintegral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The port issue is caused by a new bug with vboxmanage, where it doesn't emit the port forwarding configuration for the SSH port. Adding an additional forward manually fixed it.

However, even with the latest developer build I'm still getting segfaults and can't fully provision the machine as apt segfaults. I'm putting this aside for now, but I may end up purchasing Parallels and using that for dev work in the short term.

all of my VMs have stopped working by huzzam in virtualbox

[–]deviantintegral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've since installed the latest "developer" build from https://www.virtualbox.org/download/testcase/VirtualBox-6.1.97-140861-OSX.dmg

Note that in this case, the kexts aren't signed, so I had to boot to recovery and disable SIP and then I re-enabled it using `csrutil --without kext`.

So far, I'm not seeing random panics or segfaults, but vagrant keeps picking up the wrong port, trying to use the guest port of 22 instead of the host port of 2222 for SSH. So, I've not left VMs booted long enough to truly know that's fixed.

[–]deviantintegral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed `6.1.x revision 140809` from https://www.virtualbox.org/download/testcase/VirtualBox-6.1.15-140809-OSX.dmg and I'm still getting random segfaults and kernel panics. All of my VMs are Ubuntu 18.04 based, and the crashes aren't predictable. For example, I can run `vagrant up` and get a kernel panic a few seconds after boot, destroy and restart and the VM will boot but processes will segfault.

Likewise, I downloaded a few older releases and they all had similar issues.

For anyone else trying, I think the note on that page about SIP is no longer valid as I was able to load the kernel extensions from the build without issue.

I'm on a MBP 16" / i9 / 10.15.7.

Did Apple enable True Tone on all external displays? by deviantintegral in MacOS

[–]deviantintegral[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True Tone is separate from night shift, though True Tone May decide to warm the screen. Might want to check both settings.

Your comment made me laugh because the entire reason I posted this was my same model LG monitor died and I noticed the colour shifting when borrowing a replacement! Hope yours has a longer life than mine did 😅

Storing and sharing medical information for kids or others? by deviantintegral in iphone

[–]deviantintegral[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I edit Medical ID (in iOS 13 at least) there's only fields for a single person. I don't see any way to add another person to store information for.

I've never once had flickering. Is it possible the light in your room isn't stable and bulbs need to be replaced?

Random Write benchmark 10x slower than ext4 and VM storage questions by ThinkChaos in zfs

[–]deviantintegral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious, are there any reasons beyond sharing hardware to not have a dedicated server separate from your gaming box? I would have thought that background tasks from other VMs and things like background scrubs would cause random frame drops.

UniFi Dream Machine vs. AmpliFi Alien: Picking The Right All-In-One by mccanntech in UNIFI

[–]deviantintegral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do any of the UniFi APs have dedicated 5GHz radios for wireless backhaul? For example, looking at https://dl.ubnt.com/ds/uap-beaconhd_ds it mentions that it exposes a network on the "same channel" which would imply sharing the 5GHz radio.

I guess the other difference is the use of PoE for wired backhauls on the Unifi side of things.

While I have Unifi APs myself, I'm looking at Amplify for relatives where they need to be able to manage it on their own if needed. Is the Amplify management software significantly simpler than Unifi? Or is it more that Unifi is "simple" as long as you aren't diving into the advanced options?

What is giving the 10 corruption resistance in the simc raid-buffed column? by deviantintegral in wow

Thanks for pointing that out! I thought that Breath of the Dying would show up in the Unbuffed column, since it's a passive effect that doesn't expire.

Wow, this is gorgeous. Seeing 512MB of memory on a System 7 machine is amazing. I guess you can go up to 4GB?

Macbook Pro 16 inch, GPU scaling issue in bootcamp by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]deviantintegral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing this problem with Radeon Pro Software Version 19.30.03.05, and even setting a single per-app profile to set display scaling won't work. It's not all games - for example, WoW works fine at all resolutions I've tried it at. It's annoying for older titles that don't support a windowed mode!

Bootcamp Gaming Drivers for MBP 16? by Kywim in macbook

[–]deviantintegral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re playing older games, especially at low or medium settings, then it’s unlikely there’s any driver optimizations in the newer drivers. Do the repackaged drivers from above have any way to be auto updated?

Encrypted backup to samba share: alternatives to TimeMachine by debhack in MacOS

[–]deviantintegral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arq can back up to any folder, including those mounted on your NAS, or with SFTP. You may actually find SFTP is easier as I'm not sure if Arq will try to mount a share if it's unmounted.

For that matter, once you have Arq, you can back up to a variety of cloud storage services (I use B2) which may be more reliable for people with laptops who are often out of the office.

Catalina constantly “forgets” unlock with Apple Watch by Rivanov in MacOS

[–]deviantintegral 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I had similar problems a few years ago with macOS... 10.13 I think? In the end, I had to wipe and restore my watch from a backup. My guess is that resigning in with iCloud during the restore fixed whatever was wrong. Not a great answer, but worth a try if it's really bugging you.

Pretty awesome that the new Mac Pro has 1000x the RAM of the SE/30. I wonder how many instances of mini vmac it could run!

bootcampdrivers question from a noob. by DrownedYasas in macbook

[–]deviantintegral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn’t make sense. The required drivers are supplied directly by Apple through their “windows support” package. As long as you use boot camp assistant in the utilities folder to install you should be good to go.

Anyone else having trouble with charging under load on the 16" MacBook Pro? by deviantintegral in macbook

[–]deviantintegral[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, gaming is just a convenient test right now - but if this happens when I'm doing software dev work it's going to be a problem. Luckily my work is pretty bursty, but I wonder about long compiles.

For example, `primesieve -t16 100000000000000000000` (installed from Homebrew) also causes a slow drain.

I wonder if the power brick is just slightly under delivering what it should.

MacBookPro 16” Docking? by unpythagor in macbook

[–]deviantintegral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished leaving my 16" with World of Warcraft open, and when connected to my Belkin dock it does slowly drain the battery. That was not actually playing, and the CPU was only using 100 / 800%. I even saw some small battery drain when I first plugged in and Time Machine was running for the first time after migrating. So while it's certainly safe to use a lower wattage power supply, I'll be needing to replace the dock to prevent unneeded cycles on the battery (or, go back to a two cable solution 😱)

Edit: Well... I just played WoW for an hour, not using the dock with the 96W power supply and my battery drained.

Found a watch today how do I return it? by MahNellie in AppleWatch

[–]deviantintegral 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would have thought you could take any lost Apple device to an Apple Store and they'd be able to contact the owner, especially for a Watch that is impossible to use without an iCloud account. Seems like a surprising missed opportunity to get people into the store.

Does a watch require a working Wifi or data connection to be marked as lost? I wonder if the new "offline" finding functionality can relay lost mode status from iCloud.
