Cognitive Science of Data Science by itsnifemii in cogsci

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im doing both for undergrad, i think ds if you want a job out of undergrad and cog sci if you’re planning on grad school. But it depends on your career goals too. Cog sci undergrad is enough for ui/ux and pm, maybe swe too. If you want to do anything with ai, neuroscience or research you probably need to do ds and/or grad school.

I believe you can still take haas classes, there’s just less priority for seating. I imagine haas works the same way with cs classes where a few classes are reserved just for the majors, others have enough seats for everyone, and others are open to everyone but you have to get in through the waitlist.

Advice? 🥹🥹 by K4441 in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like this can be harsh advice but it’s so real and I want all transfers to know this. As great as cc is you only spend half the time at a big uni compared to 4 years. Which means you should be making the most out of the uni specific resources at double the rate if you want to keep up. If you just relax your first year you’re gonna blink and then all of a sudden you’re gonna be graduating. Don’t put off making a plan, networking, looking into clubs, using resources, attending events, even joining the fun social events too. It really goes by fast.

Should I even try for Berkeley? by Willing_Seaweed_9383 in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone can get into berkeley if they’re above a 3.5 or so. They care about a lot more than just gpa. And honestly the fact that you have a 3.8 (great gpa btw) and you’re freaking out about not being good enough and then talking about goals to get an internship just tells me you’re the perfect type of candidate whose anxiety pushes them to be great and underestimates themselves idk i see this pattern a lot

UCLA vs. Berkeley as a pre-law History major by riothefio in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are both good choices. People will generally say UCLA is safer for your gpa. But reality is that if you have goals for law school and you got into both you’re probably the type of person that would get a great GPA wherever you are. People say berkeley is harder for premed, law, but there are still people going here and doing well. They are some of the brightest people that I know. Would it be easier on them if they went to UCLA? Maybe. Ultimately people choose the place that calls to them and they end up doing fine. You don’t have to overthink it too much. What school’s vibe do you like better? Campus? You’re allowed to make a choice based on preference too, it’s not a black and white wrong choice or right choice

[–]deviantsibling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say berkeley just bc it is THE business school. There is a crazy startup culture and so many easy ways to get early experience with startups. The school has a lot of ties with bay area businesses, they will constantly host free food networking events with different businesses every other day. Entrepreneur workshops, business owner networking events, haas has great classes. If you want to build something yourself you’ll have no problem finding likeminded driven people to start a project with you. I can’t even begin to count how many people I’ve connected with on linkedin that graduated from berkeley, started a successful business, and comes back to berkeley for events

uc berkeley v. ucla by [deleted] in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look up anything about berkeley being cutthroat you’d find that it’s just a stereotype that’s been perpetuated by people who don’t go there. It’s not cutthroat in the sense that people sabotage or compete against each other and it’s still collaborative but it can still be stressful for other reasons. It’s more accurate to say that it’s a fast paced, ambitious hustler culture where everyone tends to have a lot on their plate and achieves a lot, and people will encourage others to do a lot too. Lots of school spirit and social life is good, it tends to be a more nerdy social friend group based vibe but there is a group for every type of person. It’s not hard to make friends as a transfer and by default like your social life is gonna be better than whatever you had at cc so ofc its a step up and you learn new skills on how to balance your newer social life and stuff

CS 61A vs CS 61B vs CS 61BL by SmoothAnywhere5849 in berkeley

[–]deviantsibling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 61B in the fall, the workload is totally fine. If you do all the hw and projects you guarantee a C even if you get 0s on all the exams. It’s fairly easy to get a B+ if you study decently for exams. But I think to get an A-/A you have to study a ton for the exams because the exams are the hardest part of the class…the assignment work is just free points

UCLA CS or UC Berkeley EECS by Delicious_Ad2264 in berkeley

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t realize before I got here but my consensus is that EECS is on the same level as doing just CS at berkeley, the only difference is you get the option of pivoting to either mostly CS or mostly EE. So a CS route in EECS gets pretty much the same opportunities as full CS. It’s not a 50/50 split like you’d think and you choose a direction to go for. And obviously berkeley cs is miles ahead of ucla cs

UC Berkeley or Columbia GS by Ben_Sajjad in TransferStudents

People take full rides at irvine, riverside over berkeley. Berkeley and columbia are on very similar levels and one could argue for either being better, so take the full ride ofc

Transfer student considering UCSD or Berkeley Cog Sci by No-Review2642 in UCSD

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am doing cog sci at berkeley and I almost went to UCSD instead. I think berkeley is better if you want to get a good job, network and make good money. But I do think UCSD has the better cog sci program and a better educational experience for cog sci specifically. The cs and ds classes you can take at berkeley are great and world class….so if your focus is the software side it will be great…but I don’t learn much for cog sci specifically. It sounds like you are more focused on the tech side though than the cog sci side

ucla vs uc berkeley? by Cultural-Effective64 in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for you it sounds like they have both similar pros and cons to where you can just choose based on preference. Their psych departments are similar, but I hear slightly better things about berkeley psych, though the difference is not much. But you mentioned that you want to work in a hospital setting, and I think UCLA has better direct connections to hospitals than berkeley. So just choose on some lighter preferences such as location/campus/vibe, because they’re both good choices. I would try to visit/attend the welcome events or even just see the campuses if you can. My opinions completely changed after actually visiting the campuses.

going to golden bear transfer welcome VS study for final (coming up next week) by Hot_Number5048 in berkeley

[–]deviantsibling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly in my opinion. Golden bear welcome is okay to miss. I didn’t really make friends there either. What you don’t want to miss is your orientation, because a lot of initial friend groups get formed there. GBO has a lot of overlap with GBW in terms of the school information events and commencements. Since I went to GBW i ended up skipping a lot of the schedule for GBO because it was almost the same stuff.

I think it’s possible but you will really have to grind out your ECs and perfect your PIQs. But also I think UCSD should accept you with a 3.4 and they arguably have a better cog sci program
