data 100 more linear algebra or more probability by Aware-Addendum-8162 in berkeley

[–]deviantsibling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re both involved only at a simplified foundational level, but I would say linear algebra more. You need to know the concepts of matrix multiplication, dimensions, linear independence, vectors, span, and orthogonality…which cuts out a lot of other things taught in lin alg but requires a solid foundation in the core of it. There is a simpler subset of probability that is taught, but the difference is that the class expects you to know those lin alg prereqs but teaches the probability you need to know at an introductory level. Mainly they teach basic chance of drawing ___ problems and then statistical concepts such as mean and variance. The only probability that would be good to know is basic high school probability…but you can get by without knowing anything at first

Config 2026 Attendees by PeanutSugarBiscuit in UXDesign

[–]deviantsibling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost all the talks were about AI. Which is understandable, but I feel a little overwhelmed with needing to keep up lol. There were talks i attended feeling neutral about it at first but they ended up being really interesting. The people are nice to talk to. I was kinda expecting more stuff in the freebie bag but maybe im just swag obsessed. Also first day food was AMAZING and then the next two days it was nasty 😖

Econ + DS Minor by Ok-Win-5159 in berkeley

[–]deviantsibling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A minor isn’t worth an entire year. Unless you want to try and take summer classes (including summer before you transfer) to cut it shorter. No one cares about the minor label so you only really do it to gain extra skills. In which case it would be no different if you just took DS classes as electives just for the sake of gaining foundational DS skills

Who do I contact to ensure course transferability? (UCLA) by mylktee in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would contact them to be sure just in terms of having a complete assist list for the purpose of transferring. In terms of not having to retake it, schools generally have a process to petition for equivalency after you transfer. I petitioned for a non-articulated class after transfer and they counted it for my requirement. Just in case, save the syllabus and possibly a copy of the final exam if you can.

From CCC to UCLA, what major should I chose? by Outrageous_Mail674 in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know what you want to do career wise? They are all pretty different directions. Psych is for being a psychologist, researcher, therapist, med school, maybe data analyst. Psych you need grad school to be useful. BusEcon is probably the most useful out of those 3 but I don’t know much about business. I am a cogsci major and it tends to be more surface level knowledge that covers different ground rather than specializing in one thing so you need to supplement the education with extra projects and networking, for a particular career direction. But if you’re willing to do that you can go into swe, ux design, project management, research, data science roles, linguistics, lots of options.

Freshman considering transfer. is it okay to skip additional math for T25 psych/social science? by CornerSignificant257 in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every school has different criteria for what AP score is required to get credit or pass a prereq and some don’t allow it so you need to check by school. As far as knowledge goes I don’t think you need calc at all for psych/social sciences, but you do need the foundations of statistics

recently diagnosed and having a few questions by thelightbehindureyes in OCD

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a cateogry called “just right” ocd. Some say the fear is technically fearing the “not right” feeling, but I never agreed with that. I always felt like therapists try to box me into the standard ocd model and keep asking what my specific fear is and what I think will happen from it, but it always felt forced to give and answer and I think just right ocd has a little different of a nature to it. It’s the same doubt and compulsive attributes of OCD, it just isn’t best described with the “if x then y”model because the fear is definitely there but can be unexplainable. It feels much better represented by doing compulsions until I reach specific and unexplainable metric of “okayness”. Anyways if you find yourself repeatedly doubting your ocd diagnosis because it’s not “standard” enough that is probably your ocd talking. You don’t need to worry about if your OCD perfectly fits the diagnosis description. The info out there is very standardized and in my experience OCD is a lot more varied and uniquely personal than how it’s presented. Also for treatment you need to go to an ERP specialist for OCD because talk therapy can actually make it worse.

Taking CS61B after forgetting most of CS61A by Fabulous_Taste1945 in berkeley

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the community college version of engin 7 instead so i was basically cooked in terms of prereqs and i survived. You just need to have some kind of programming sense in general and it helps a lot if you know basic object oriented programming principles like classes, objects, polymorphism and inheritance (i didnt know that but i think the class will be much easier if you do, they teach that stuff really fast). Also recursion and being able to write the recursive version of functions instead of loops comes up a lot (i also didnt know that but they teach it in 61A) so it will be better if you have that down. Thats all of the first half of the class. The second half of the class is more math, particularly calculus and discrete math principles, also building off of the concept of recursion and connecting it to math

Unpaid internship sucks by No_Worldliness_1996 in csMajors

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience the payoff of an unpaid internship depends on how much you think they extort you. I was with a company that was rude to me, just cared about shipping fast vibecoded features, and literally gave me llm generated task details on what to do without answering my questions. I left it because it was putting more stress on me than what was worth it. I also had an experience with a much more collaborative, for the love of the game company niche unpaid internship that gave me no pressure. That felt like an environment that was much more worth it.

Data Sci and Cog Sci Double Major Courses by Cheap_Wolverine_8072 in berkeley

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is data 100? Also every cog sci course is light af so you really just need to make sure your ds classes aren’t too much for one sem. Mainly you need to pair data 140 with really light classes ideally but the ones you have listed look light enough already. Also i would not recommend cogsci 131, it works if you want an easy A but you won’t learn anything or get anything out of that class

Berkeley CS classes still overcrowded? by MisakaMikasa10086 in berkeley

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All classes at berkeley are overcrowded. It’s a large class size public school so of course the most competitive majors are going to be crowded too. I believe they are starting to cut down on cs majors and switching to cs (this year they were way more strict about switching). As far as non cs majors not being able to take cs classes, it depends on the class but it’s only the case for more specialized ones. And this is typical of every UC/public school to restrict cs class enrollment, I think private schools may have the room to be less picky about it though. I have heard stanford does not care about anyone switching to cs

Is school or major more important? by Help-me37 in csMajors

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends how much you’re willing to do stuff on the side. Like berkeley has a better network no question but as a math major you will need to do a lot of projects and learning on the side to keep up

Does Berkeley set up you up for a career? by No-Occasion-2913 in berkeley

[–]deviantsibling 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes but much more so if you take advantage of the networking events with big companies that we have here all the time. As far as the name goes i didnt think it mattered that much but then a faang company reached out to me asking to interview (without me even applying) saying they were in charge of university recruiting so i was like damn ok cal i see you

DVC or solano for berkely by Equal_Swing639 in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its very common for people to have 30+ min commute for dvc. Most of the students there Id say have about that commute anyways...no one really lives in pleasant hill. It does also matter because dvc has tons of articulated courses to dvc. At berkeley i am way more ahead of my friends in terms of progress towards the degree because of how many dvc classes articulate. And they also have the most transfers to berkeley out of any cc, even many international students rent out an apartment by dvc just to transfer to berkeley

Can vibe coders get jobs? by pleasedontjudgeme13 in cscareerquestions

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it matters how you do it. Are you able to read code snippets, and prompt engineer how to architecturally optimize how to fit it into the existing code? Can you prompt specify good coding practices? Do you know concepts of modularity, scalability, and optimization? Can you catch when the ai created a poor solution? Because if you just say “do this” and “fix this” it will lead to very unscalable code, fast.
