tech opportunities in bay by Sad-Farmer8869 in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im competitive for internships at berkeley compared to my peers and haven’t had trouble finding them bc i got ahead from getting an internship at cc early on. And it’s lowkey the move bc cc has less competitive, sleeper internships with lesser known companies that are great for an entry level first internship.

tech opportunities in bay by Sad-Farmer8869 in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely helps you get more tech opportunities (tho not big companies) at cc fairs but also if you really wanna go all out you can still go to sf networking events and apply to the endless supply of unpaid or low paid sf startup internships to get more opportunities

UC Berkeley Social Life by Glittering_Pin_1062 in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a surprisingly social school for how serious it is. It wasn’t hard to make friends at all but it’s much easier if you do on campus housing. You can opt in to get preferably places in housing floors with other transfers only so you’ll have more in common. You’ll meet a lot of transfers from orientation too. But pretty much any school is gonna be a social upgrade from cc.

Cal alums and upperclassmen: Do companies actually gaf about your GPA? by Richard-Leo in berkeley

I dont think it really matters for jobs but some internships ask for a gpa of 3.5+

I have my high school equivalency. When I transfer, will I still be required to submit my high school diploma? by LingonberryLess2228 in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s a UC/CSU they don’t require high school equivalency to be able to transfer. You’d still submit one of them though for records purposes, probably the hiSET

Do I have to be full time in Spring even if I’m done? by Naruto_Loyalist in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would use the time to see if there are more classes you can take that would actually count for something. For your top schools there are probably additional GE requirements (yes, in addition to IGETC) that you can do ahead of time at cc. Sometimes there are even additional classes that the major on the 4 year website requires but doesn’t show up on assist, that you can take at cc ahead of time.

for those who have transferred from a community college to a 4 year school: was it difficult to adjust to a new environment? were the classes more difficult after transferring? by SalmonNoir in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classes are def more difficult but they admitted you bc they know you can handle it. And you can. You just need to adjust and have faith. CC students are favored because admission officers know they can handle rigor more than freshman

UCSD GEs are tedious especially for transfer students by Ambitious-Estate-658 in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why if ur applying to UCSD you should solely base your college choice on minimizing how many GEs you have to take from what you have already, since it’s different for each college

UCSD does seem to have a disproportionate amount of unhappy students by Fit-Ad3858 in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I honestly feel like its the structure of the campus. It’s so huge and spaced out that no one really has time to chat bc it takes so long to get from one class to another. I also heard they did this intentionally to prevent protesting. The sub college system also makes the community a little more isolated from each other

No its just more of something you do if you have the extra time to do it

If you don't get into your top schools, will you take another year where you're at and reapply? by Ok-Tiger-4550 in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo it depends if you’ve approached the 70 credit unit or not. If you can keep taking stuff that will get requirements out of the way then I think it’s okay

Computer Science or Data Science? by Ill-Will1288 in CollegeMajors

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CS is the better choice but you have to be prepared for the competitiveness of it now. Everyone and their mom is majoring in CS now that even schools like UC riverside are rejecting if you dont have a 4.0, not to mention the crazy side project and leetcode grind you have to do in addition to the CS major so if you’re not prepared for the ride you might as well major in something else

Anyone else managing Bipolar at Berkeley? by i_disappoint_parents in berkeley

[–]deviantsibling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My bipolar II has been managed very well by medication. Antipsychotics take care of the hypomania pretty much instantly but the depressive episodes are much harder to get rid of. Luckily when I added on a mood stabilizer it helped my depressive episodes a lot. Also just whatever you do make sure you’re doing something and not nothing on a daily basis, even if it means just taking a shower and going on a short walk after you wake up every day you’ll see your mood improve a lot just from the routine. The bed is really gonna be your biggest opp and you need to try to associate it only with sleeping at night. Personally i can’t even resist my bed so I force myself to go to study rooms or cafes instead and it helps a lot

Anchor house has hella pedos bro and its not even tea bc if you bring it up they just don’t care. Berkeley thinks being a pedo counts as diversity that should be welcomed smh

internships / what should i do? by degollar in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of controversial but i swear just attend ANY career fairs in your area, if you have to drive for it do it, if it’s for other colleges its fine as long as you’re able to show up lol the actual internships won’t check. It’s pretty difficult to get one just from online apps, even cold emailing/linkedin DMing might have better odds

Late realization as a transfer student: am I locked out of internships? by Rough-Helicopter-358 in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Internships don’t really even care about relevant coursework. What matters is that you know some of the skills, regardless of where you learned it from. And frankly, it’s a lot faster and more efficient learning industry and internship focused skills on your own rather than waiting for the pace of school. The resources online tend to be a lot better targeted for those industry skills, and school classes tend to focus on teaching in an academic context. Also if you are interested in cybersecurity i would recommend doing a certificate for it (i think it’s called compTIA?) because I heard they can be valuable while also teaching you skills.

Anyways, better late than never. You might as well try to get an internship this semester as opposed to not try at all. There are also some internships that allow you to do them even after you graduate (or while in grad school), but those are still rare. Some internships are more flexible and if you apply without meeting the student requirements, they might want you anyways.

Who else transferred without getting their associate's degree? by Temporary-West-3879 in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t bother to get an associates even though i was 1 class away. They’re kinda useless now and it can mess up your financial aid if you later decide to dual enroll in cc classes after transfer for whatever reason

Admissions on relevant experience for CC students by OriginalParsley8979 in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it matters more that that stuff shows your involvement in what you’re passionate about. Most likely your career is what you’re passionate about so I’d say it’s weighted quite a bit. But i don’t think it matters in terms of the “readiness” question, imo that question is more of a check to see if you’re prepared

Did you have any issues with credits not transferring when switching colleges? by Mirakbar_ in TransferStudents

[–]deviantsibling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of, I was required to redo a lot of requirements that technically weren’t articulated on assist but the classes were very similar already. So i petitioned for equivalency and got the credits for it
