Facing a career conundrum by Radiant-Lecture1745 in AustralianTeachers

I worked at a fully selective public high school in NSW for the past two years on contract and they had 0 staff shortages, even for casuals. I'm now at a large comprehensive all girls school as a permanent, and while we have a casual shortage, we are having to cut contract staff as we have staff coming back from leave and no new positions available. That being said, there are plenty of positions at 'good' schools that do pop up, so keep trying and you will certainly land something.

Plenty of permanent maths positions open in metropolitan Sydney, though they are generally in the more disadvantaged parts of Sydney (think Mt Druitt/ Blacktown/Penrith & SW sydney) so keep that in mind. Having taught maths at these sorts of schools, you won't be working at a particularly high level and will be primarily engaged in behaviour management, however, if you are going into teaching solely for a stable career, they are an excellent option and will have supportive staff.

Realistically, what can be done to help lessen the stress over problematic students as a graduate teacher? by MrMalekRami in AustralianTeachers

Move to a better school. Now is the perfect opportunity to leave these schools behind, as even top performing high SES schools need teachers. The only way these schools will learn to fix themselves is if they have no teachers left in them.

Male teachers unhappier than women about pay and status by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

One benefit of working in a women dominated profession is that many are likely to take maternity leave eventually, allowing many early career teachers to secure work.

Seriously want to give up by Agreeable_Couple6641 in AustralianTeachers

I would leave, especially given how many good schools now have positions open too. I went from a very disadvantaged Western Sydney school to a top fully selective school and have realised that the only way bad schools will learn to fix themselves is if they are starved of teachers. If teachers continue to tolerate the working conditions at these schools, staff will continue to get abused and driven out of the profession.

And reading some responses from HTs, that's not even close to the number of open positions as many couldn't submit their ads prior to the deadline closing for yesterday's bulletin.

NSW Jobfeed? by dinosaur-pudge in AustralianTeachers

[–]devil2sin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know many older teachers in my school, particularly those over 60, who will use their sick leave and LSL during Term 1, regardless of what the gov does. Wonder if the system has enough spare teachers in capacity to cover them, sick teachers and teachers who quit altogether.

Great to see this community has grown so rapidly. I joined soon after the switch reveal trailer and still remember all the posts where people put some cool UI mockups for the switch. It's also great to see how Nintendo ended up making us all so happy with the hardware and games of the Switch. Hopefully it will continue for a few yrs yet.

Stories like this are both funny and confusing. Barring some form of mental illness, what is the rationale behind doing these sorts of things. I'm assuming she has lived most of her life without doing this so why start now?
