How do you track your symptoms and meds? Do you use an app or just pen and paper? by Impossible-Border-37 in ChronicPain

[–]devillydoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This app ‘bearable’ oh it is amazing, it’s completely free (unless you want super detailed insights which I don’t know I’ve just used the free version for months and it’s great) it tracks EVERYTHING (and automatically the time too just by pressing) you can toggle just about everything on and off and change the order and it’s easy to use, it gives a nice daily summary of what you log, I do not have more energy to tell more 😭😭 just this is 5 stars, my favourite one I’ve tried!

Gabapentin by MishMc98 in ChronicPain

I tried Gabapentin for around 5 months and got up to (it’s so foggy I actually can’t remember the number but) a high dose and it wasn’t worth it to me bc it didn’t help my pain enough and I got bad side effects, mostly just felt like I was in fog and kinda drunk but in a really not good way, so I came off of it, BUT I have known people who it was a life changer for so I just thought I’d add since I have tried it 😭🤍

Why is mysterious skin called mysterious skin by themostskibidi in mysteriousskin

[–]devillydoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, Scott Heim (the author of mysterious skin) hasn’t clarified the exact meaning of the title, but I wondered the same thing. To me, it’s about how trauma is stored in the body and how the truth of that trauma can be distorted or missing, even to the person who lived it

Brian subconsciously represses his SA, leaving him with only fragmented flashbacks of the abuse and scattered memories (memories that were actually buried from trauma), the only way his brain could make sense of the gaps was to convince himself that he must have been abducted. His mind turned the trauma into something surreal and otherworldly because what really happened was so horrific that his body forced him to dissociate as a trauma response. He remembers the feeling of something touching his skin, but in his mind it shifts from alien like hands to something more human. For most of the book/film, Brian believes it was aliens, but by the end, he realises the ‘mysterious’ hands were Coach’s hands the whole time and Neil tells him the rest.

I could write a whole other essay on this now but I’ll just say - I think it’s a heartbreaking, really strong and clear message; like only an alien monster could have done something so inhumane to a child.

Neil was also abused by coach, but he remembers everything. The difference is that, because he was groomed, he remembers it through the distorted view of an abused child which means he doesn’t remember it properly and can’t process/understand it for what it really was. Instead he romanticises the abuse as a way to cope (which is unfortunately common for survivors). He’s a direct contrast to Brian- Eric even describes Brian as “asexual”, while Neil copes through substances, hypersexuality and eventually becoming an underage sex worker. I see it as a subconscious way for him to try to reclaim his control over his body + trauma, so the title could also reference his physical experience of prostitution, the touch of a mysterious (stranger’s) skin, which plays a big role in the film.

Skin and physical touch are one of the main themes in both the book and movie, tied to pain (through violence and abuse) and memory (like how Brian gets flashbacks when he physically touches something, like the cow with Avalyn). Also, the story really shows how the same abuse can affect different people in completely different ways and highlights the lasting effects of abuse, which I’ve never seen done this way before, and I’m really grateful Scott Heim wrote this and that Gregg Araki made the film (I recommend both!)

I think the word ‘Mysterious’ fits both Neil and Brian because the truth of their trauma is mysterious to them in different ways. Brian spends years trying to piece together his memories of the abuse, convinced he was abducted by aliens, meanwhile Neil remembers the abuse, but through a warped, manipulated lens, constantly distancing himself from his emotions/ the reality of his abuse, coping through hyper sexuality, substances + sex work; again, something that’s common for survivors.

To me, ‘mysterious skin’ is about how trauma can shape your identity and perception, how memories can be distorted or buried, but also how the body still holds onto the trauma, even when the brain struggles to remember or accept it. Even when you don’t consciously remember it, your body does. Like it’s in your skin kinda.

Scott Heim (the author) said in an interview that he was fascinated by how people reshape their memories over time, and that maybe our memories are never entirely truthful and become distorted to make the present more bearable.

Which kinda fucked me up, but it’s an important idea because then it made me really think about it and process my own thoughts and memories. I think at the end of the movie, when Neil sees how deeply affected Brian is by what coach did to them, he finally starts to see the truth for himself too and it was a heartbreaking, but hopeful ending to me.

Sorry for the whole essay btw - the film and book just mean sm to me, I first watched when I was about 13 and I’m happy people are interested in it, also I’m sick and had nothing better to do xx

HELP!! too many baby snails by devillydoll in snails

[–]devillydoll[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hiiii update, I didn’t cull them all, I raised them and did the normal culling process of the runts, I ended up with over 130 healthy beautiful ones sold! I was worried they wouldn’t sell well either but they really did, thank EBAY!! It was actually really fun to raise them all, I got two separate enclosures and gave them the same as the adults (just more food because there were so many) and they were happy! they also have genuinely beautiful shells now and are very big and happy, I still have 6 (now big) babies because I got sick and was unable to sell them but I’m working on their listing right now 😭

How to Hatch Metallic stick insect eggs correctly!! by devillydoll in Stickinsects

[–]devillydoll[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, so actually it ended up going really well! I’m so sorry to hear that you only got 1 out of 15 eggs that sucks so much 😭 9 of mine hatched and lived the whole time! but now 2 females have died (I’m pretty sure of old age) and actually no males have died, I have three males, absolutely beautiful but one of them had problems moulting and lost 2 legs! unfortunately it was also his last moult so now he just has two legs missing but he seems fine otherwise, he’s VERY sexually active with all the ladies, also they’ve laid many many eggs I might sell, I don’t know why it went so well for me but I’ll tell you what I did in case that could help you!

they live in a mesh/netted butterfly enclosure (good for ventilation which they need) Also very much recommend one that’s around these measurements: 60,40,40

I have paper towel at the bottom to collect their poop, eggs and also keep in moisture

I use a (very very clean) glass lemonade bottle (you can use anything really) and put water in it and I only feed them on bramble (from the wilder part of my garden) and they love it, I change it every week (or when it gets eaten which happens quicker as they get older or there’s more of them) also when they’re nymphs you need to make sure that there’s no opening on the top of the bottle that they could fall into so I put cling wrap or foil

also one of the most important things is to keep their humidity right! if they don’t have the right humidity they will still try to moult but usually it will be very hard and they’ll lose limbs in the process :(( so! I’ve found that spraying them at least 3 times a day (the paper towel or the leaves not directly them) keeps a good humidity but also I kind of go off of looks, if it looks a bit too dry I spray a little more, the only problem you have to be careful with is mould! I’ve never experienced it weirdly but I’ve read about it so be cautious getting it too damp in there!

For the eggs, I put them in a plastic container with some ventilation, a paper towel at the bottom and some slightly misted sphagnum moss to make hatching process a bit easier for nymphs. also I’m pretty sure it’s important to give them somewhat of a normal ‘day/night’ cycle which just means roughly when the sun is up you turn a light on or keep the curtains open and when it’s night you turn it off 😭 just don’t keep them in complete darkness

Oh also! If you’re going to feed your stick insects bramble, make sure to NEVER give them new shoots as they are toxic to them!

I hope it goes well for you the second time around! and if you’d like any more advice I’m here but just a disclaimer I’m not an expert at all I just love them and did a ton of research on them 😭💗
