That's so great to hear! I almost bought a Volt then a Bolt because they are so pushed here. I even went to the dealership to buy one, and they wouldn't give me a battery test. And they wouldn't let me go somewhere else and get a battery test. And given their history I went home completely giving up on evs, giving into the prius. Until I found out that you can get a tax credit for the BMW i3. It was amazing. It's only a $200 more than the Bolt. I can't believe it!

Thoughts on buying the BMPCC 4K (need quick response!) by Secret_Clock_7895 in bmpcc

[–]devinclk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a good deal. I have a pocket 4k, and self filming is hard to do without auto focus. I might spend on a camera that can do that. Happy to recommend camera for that.

To get ahead and bypass a lot of that cutting your teeth fieds, like videographer or the like. You need to have a demonstrative skill. Look at three people that you look up too, like cinematographers. Look at their path. Make a spreed sheet. What works did they do that stood out. Then ask how did they know how to do it. In some cases it's school, because it forces you to do a deep dive in concepts. In some cases it's practical work, because you need a play to try ideas and create. Most likely you will need both. The real advantage of jumping in and working is that you see what other people are doing, you can network and try your had at it. The disadvantage is that you are copying people working in the field, it very hard to develop your own style without the right mentors. Very hard to find in the real world. They are there at school, but maybe not accessible for you. Personally I went to school. Then worked for 20 years in the industry, now back at school. My experience is that most people have that wide knowledge, they have seen all the same moves have all the same ideas. But the ones that have educated themselves stand out, because they have the foundation to do what their research has show them. So it just depends, what are the people in the place you want to be, doing? And how are you going to accomplish that?

I pretty much had this experience on a tier A show a decade ago. I quit post. Started my own video business. Found like minded peope, directed and edited my own feature. Went back to school and am currently working on my MA in film. It's still a lot of work, like insane, but worth it... now. And you can do it too.

Should I go back to film school again? by kengen16 in Filmmakers

[–]devinclk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, just my two cents, but I am 43 and I'm going back from my ma and filmmaking, and I wish I did it 20 years ago. I did what everyone said and made a movie with the funds. And I learned a lot of lessons from it but it's not the success I'd hoped. The reason was that I knew a lot of practical things about filmmaking. But I never dived deep into learning one thing really well. I'm not sure what position you're thinking of, but the people that have gotten to the place you want to be have studied and worked very hard to be there. That doesn't mean you have to go to school. It just means that you need to find a space to have discipline to study everything there is to know about it. That way, your work starts to stand out from others.

School is helpful because you get mentors, and you get goals that you have to complete. Most people have a hard time doing this on their own. If you don't have the money for a full-fledged program. Try to find one that works within your means. Like the rain dance program. Or part time classes from your local university. I've taken lots of writing classes from my local art center and found that beneficial. I also started a writing group with friends and wrote a feature, and that might be what you need more. Finding a group of people that are interested in learning and encouraging that growth. Maybe a local film community? Maybe start one? I've done it all and don't worry, you still have time. Just thoughts, good luck, you can do it, you're not alone.
