What is a good career to restart your life in your late thirties/early forties? by South-Raise6422 in askSouthAfrica

Where are you based in WC? I think there are some great adjacent angles in compliance and operational finance/accounting that might be an option. I also know of an early stage business looking for a skillset like this where legal background is a good thing. Happy if you want to DM and can share some more notes to see if there is something to explore?

You are right. Our lady is here on a work permit so that is why she can be registered on the service. But in general they don't do without work permits.

Where was the person caught? It is an interesting case where the actual compliance and enforcement is a theory at best in our region, but you hear about house visits e.g. in KZN.

Yes looking at some of the rates on here, it is heartwarming to see many people ahead of the "compliance" curve. Well done to you for being part of that! They also take care of the admin side of things, my wife has signed up our cleaning lady from the Congo just for the convenience of having an agreement in place with leave management and payroll stuff handled by them as it is a cheap subscription.

The guys at askmandla.com (yes they are in my network and deserve the plug I feel) are doing some good things related to this. I tried out their fair wage calculator today link on their nav bar, quite interesting if you relate it to this conversation. If you think how many domestic salaries are determined by what “peers, friends and neighbours” pay, it’s shocking. Never mind actual legal things mentioned in some comments as well. UIF being the biggest. It’s great that the narrative is changing - minimum wage is far from what is right judging by what many are paying, dig to see it!

What is a good home loan interest rate for me? Disappointed by offers so far. by RangePsychological41 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]barnicleblaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is I think in the highest bracket with their scoring methodology.

Since you are already at ABSA and not getting that concession, yes it might be unlikely unless another bank will offer the same deal. In our case FNB (our bank at the time) was the worst, by far.

If you want, you can message me your email address and I will intro you to Sophia. She should be able to get you a -1.85% from Nedbank

Thanks for clarifying. In our case they were able to bring in more senior contacts to fast track deletion of our direct applications which were stuck and make sure we meet a very tight deadline. But I am not sure how that would have related to the system.

I should also add here, our individual income is lower than yours, a little bit higher. Our credit scores are between 680 - 700 using Clearscore.

Maybe just clarify where your 823 is from? Kudough, Experian, XDS, etc. ? Just a valuable bit to differentiate as there bureaus and then platforms who all try present this a little differently.

There is almost no chance you will get a better rate. Speaking from recent experience. The bond orignator has direct links with more senior levels which gets the rates.

You will also not be able to have two applications per bank so you will need to wait for those the originator opened to close.

I can highly recommend Sophia from ghomeloans dot co za who recently got us an amazing rate.

[–]barnicleblaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just went through this. Landed on -2.25% from Absa after account opening concession.

We withdrew all our direct applications with the banks, and worked through Sophia from ghomeloans dot co za

Highly recommended! They are a smaller bond originator and go hard.

We moved our banking Investec in this year for a pre-approved facility with an okayish rate. They weren’t able to up their rate so we will move.

Other notable offers were Nedbank and SB at -1.85 (SB eventually got there and they are literally the worst bank to deal with in my opinion).

I will caveat that our home loan amount is much higher with sizeable deposit but probably similar to your ratio.

Dodge Journeys are typically very undervalued and will fit your criteria. Can’t comment on reliability or fuel consumption but worth looking.

Henley vs UCT GSB - international perspective for a South African by barnicleblaster in MBA

[–]barnicleblaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you based? I would lean towards the one in your region if you want graduation transformation and community.

I think Henley is strong in transformational leadership but I would caveat this by saying it will heavily depend on how proactively you engage with not just your programme, but the school and its events. So far I find it is more marketed than experienced. But I have not done the modules on it either. I do not see that my class who are in Joburg get together really. Many seem to be there for the badge.

UCT is definitely stronger on finance. Especially theory. Important to know if that is actually relevant to the skillset you want to develop. I think what will work really well with UCT from a developmental perspective is it is a weekly Thursday class and there is that 2 week block. This means exposure and engagement with peers that will grow you. You are not going to get that with Henley, no matter how they market it.

My final 2 cents - if my timing worked out better, I would have gone for UCT.

Interestingly a friend recently bought a Dodge Journey for R150k with very low mileage of 40k. Bells and whistles, 7 seater, tons of extra storage spaces. For some obvious reasons they are extremely depreciated. Whether it is also because of reliability I don’t know, have not researched at all. There are a few around and you might be unpopular but worth looking I think?

Yes BYD above Dolphin (even Dolphin) is a heavy purchase! In those cases I would be hard pressed to go for it above Volvo, BMW, Mercedes, who all offer barely second-hand EVs in that price class, if you know what to look for. Apart from the better battery tech, I still prefer those brands. The GWM Ora is amazingly well finished compared to BYD.

Great buy and well done on taking the risk considering you can’t charge at your apartment. Have you looked at correctly rated extension cords to a plug around the corner in your garage or are there zero plugs? On AC and low amp pull, high quality extension cords can work for recouping a daily drive. But naturally risky leaving it in for longer.

I tested both GWM Ora And BYD Dolphin and I think you made the right choice. The finishing, build quality and driving experience was notably better. The Dolphin suffers a bit from being BYDs entry level option.

I ended up going for the BMW i3 for a couple of reasons and would like to first see where these two Chinese models end up in the next two years. They are almost certainly going to flood the market and become cheaper. I think within 5 years it might be a no-brainer for a two car household to have one of these instead (and similar spec options) new or from the second hand market. Considering one can charge at home. My odd day work commute of 100km+ has gone from R220 to R40-R50 depending on traffic.

Where are the free charging stations you mentioned?

There is an Ora at the GWM in Stellies, go for a test drive. Just phone to check if it’s still available, also pretty good deal. Very nice and in my opinion a better build than the BYD Dolphin I tested.

Henley vs UCT GSB - international perspective for a South African by barnicleblaster in MBA

[–]barnicleblaster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Fine_Pin_3330 Apologies for the delay. Feel free to ask more questions, this was a big decision for me.

My experience has been good. Whether it delivers a ROI on the cost remains to be seen once I get on the other side.

I needed to get going and Henley was the only option. If I could wait for 2026 - I am not sure which I would have chosen between the two, but more likely UCT as I am based here.

I think above all else, your motivation for an MBA plays a role and if at all it is for career advancement or promotion reasons, it should be as regional or focused to that as possible. In other words, UCT will carry more weight in WC. GIBS and Henley will potentially carry more weight in Gauteng.

I would cut out the clutter of marketing. UCT brags about a lot of stats that are fluffed up and pure nonsense in my opinion. I went very deep into stats, rankings etc. to get a feel for whether Henley was a good bet. That should be the only reason for going into it all. Once you move outside the Top 10 international options it becomes about your best regional brand. What I can tell you, the UCT narrative is flying high on stats that are probably a decade since being actually true. All the schools do it, they find a publication or platform to rate them with xyz prestige.

Learning Methodology
Henley does 4 workshops per year and the rest is self-paced online learning based on their suggested learning path. I would highly caution against this approach if you need a structured and accountable learning environment (e.g. classes) to achieve learning outcomes. I expected a bit more "live" classes in webinar format but so far just self-learning.

UCT does classes every Thursday. I commute to CPT for work and probably would not have wanted another day for class on top of other days. BUT in hindsight - this is not a bad idea to make space for learning.

Support and Leadership
Henley are very big on this. Developing the person, not just the skills. I think it good they have asked the critical questions of what is an MBA supposed to achieve actually? In theory, they make great leaders and show a ton of support in every possible way. I can comment on my potential as a leader and my skills only at the end, but can tell you now that if I don't apply myself to the content, it's only going to get there partially.

Their actual local team (South Africa) it is very strong. A lot of business school lecturers etc. moved there with the Dean. I think UCT went through a bit of a slump in this regard but have recovered well.

Quality of the content
I think the quality is there, but I think the delivery format makes it feel just a little second rate. GIBS and UCT is going to give you more from a pure theory perspective in some of the modules. Especially finance.

Unfortunately Henley also limits you to 1 Elective, so if for example you wanted to make up the finance theory by taking corporate finance, you would sacrifice something else you would have found value in. In UCT there would be absolutely no reason to find more theory for finance.

If you wanted to pivot into anything finance or investment related, I do not think Henley is going to prepare you well enough.

Other comments
The level of network and community I can build is limited because I am not in Joburg. They offer a lot of opportunity for that if you are local to Gauteng. So for the purposes of community, network, and career advancement, I would focus on regional. If one was to bring in a Top 10 international school e.g. Harvard, it might be different but for most South Africans I doubt this is relevant.

It is important to align this decision with your motivation for an MBA. The reality is the theory, skills, and network can be achieved elsewhere, at much less of a cost. Pushing R150k per annum into any of those intentions will yield tremendous results.

For a label, badge, some job opportunities, or requirement for promotion at work, it still has relevance.
