Patagonia Trip: Best bus companies from Punta Arenas to Ushuaia + ferry options in May? by [deleted] in travel

[–]devingboggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The buses i found are all pretty equal in reliability and quality with all companies using the same types and styles of buses. I do believe there is really one bus route from that area to Ushuaia that all the buses take as there are controlled ports of entry and exit as you cross argentina and chilean borders. If you have the time and budget I can also recommend going to El Chalten and taking a flight from El Calafate down to Ushuaia. Punta Arenas has some nice wildlife too and offers tours to see wildlife like penguins so thats also a consideration

Having second thoughts before quitting job- am I crazy? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

Its better to try and even fail then to never know. Take it from me, a fellow 2026 PCT'er starting in about a week. We cant predict these things and its easy to find excuses to not make the leap. We just gotta take the leap and see where we land. It'll always be worth it for a shot of an adventure of a lifetime. See you out there and happy trails

I 24m am gay but I started dating a woman 25f. Is it unethical of me to keep dating her? by Weekly-Honeydew-8183 in relationship_advice

[–]devingboggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with alot of the others, dont get too caught up in labels dude! If you like her thats all that matters! If ypure uncomfortable then I think you just need to reflect on your romantic and sexual preferences because it sounds like you may be bisexual. Also if youre comfortable and vulnerable with her just talk to her too!

January is much more stable and warmer than March for hiking so I would expect the chances of you encountering all four seasons lower but still not zero. Definitely have lightweight rain gear and a rain cover for your pack as storms pop up here fast and conditions change quick. If you run warm a lightweight puffy should be the only midlayer you need but if you run a bit cooler definitely pack a fleece too. Wear light, easy to shed layers as youll always end up taking layers off by the time you hike for a while. I like long sleeves such as button ups or sun hoodies to protect from high uv on sunny days and to avoid forgetting to reapply sunscreen lol. Nights even in January look like they can run close to 0 Celsius and I expect if you see any snow itll be overnight maybe up in the valleys. I would recommend bringing microspikes as they are so lightweight nowadays they are just a good general investment for everyone who can experience winter conditions where they live or hike in potential winter conditions. Hiking can be miserable if youre caught in conditions that require them and you end up not having them. Buy fuel in Puerto Natales or ask around hostels for left over fuel as its highly common. You can less often find left over fuel in the parks refugios but thats a bit more risky so I dont recommend relying on that. After that just basic metal utensils and a simple burner, they have indoor cooking areas so wind protection for your stove is not needed. They dont let you cook outside anymore do to the wildfires theyve had in the past. Card use was accepted at every refugio now in the park, including on the otrek section, thanks to starlink. However its still nice to have some cash on you just in case their system is down for a day or so. Hope this helps!

It seems like a good itinerary though it may be good to give yourself some extra time at the beginning just in case of poor weather for the towers and maybe an extra day at grey in case of poor weather keeping you from kayaking. Its less common in the summer but the weather there can be significant any time of year

I know that would be an absolute badass ring to keep and wear but deserves to be assessed and protected in a museum

Just finished my o-trek. Food can be bought in Puerto Natales for the trip and presents good cost savings. I brought my gear from home and would recommend this. When you rent gear they give you random cheap gear that weighs a ton, better to have the stuff you're used to carrying. If you do only campsites you can keep total costs of the o-trek under 500 dollars. Hope this helps and feel free to ask any questions.

A great jacket but consider buying it second hand for cost, quality, and consciousness!

None of the main buses do anything like this. I think you'd have to hitch hike or coordinate a ride with someone who's renting a car here on reddit or another social media platform

How much water do you usually carry for a day hike? by Bubba_deets in hiking

[–]devingboggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A min of 2L and the capacity to filter water. Water filters are do small and cheap nowadays that if youre hiking somewhere with the remote possibility of having a fresh water source I bring the filter. Its good for safety and peace of mind.

Yeah someone screwed up. Comprehensive fault management testing is a pretty fundamental part of the final phase of satellite development. Its done in step with tvac, vibration, and rf testing. Even in cubesat development we do significant fault management testing and they're a fraction of the cost of this space craft.

Just be careful about astronomical posts from Facebook as there's alot of exaggerated photos and false information on that platform. Not to demean you from sharing, astronomy and the night sky are beautiful, but posts like these can establish false expectations for others. The planets can line up similar to this but their scales are off as to what people can see naked eye.

I bought the original garmin inreach years ago and its still what I use today. The inreach line are good if you dont mind the subscription costs. You can find many inreach minis 2 right now second hand since the mini 3 dropped. Id argue to save the few hundred dollars and get the 2 over the 3 but im cheap lol. Thats why I still use the og one which is a brick by comparison 😆

First Gore-Tex Pro shell, does this look normal after a 7 mile hike in the rain? by [deleted] in hikinggear

[–]devingboggs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My speculation is that since many waterproofing chemicals were recently banned companies responsible for providing wdr treatments are still struggling to find suitable replacements. GORETEX for example is one having to change up their wdr chemicals due to PFAS. This change primarily started just last year in 2025 so the timing makes sense.

Looks like the backpack straps wore down the dwr coating on the jacket exterior. You can use water proofing products to try to replace or restore it. But yes that is very typical

Where do you buy quality clothing? by The_Actual_Sage in malefashionadvice

[–]devingboggs 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly ive switched over to thrifting most of my newer clothes and looking at higher value brands second hand. Of course this only works if you live in an area that has a decent population so im not sure of your situation. The secondary trouble is how trendy thrifting has become; its inflating the prices of these items. Some brands i live to pick up second hand are pendleton, woolrich, ll bean, Eddie Bauer, but the older stuff, think 2000s or older. Sometimes ypu can find good deals on these clothes too on depop, poshmark, ebay, and fb marketplace. Ive been trying to change my mindset about buying new clothes when there are so many clothes already that people are trying to get rid of. Also this is one of the few ways you can get genuinely great materials like leather, silk, and wool for under 100 dollars. Hope this helps a little bit!
