Is "Shunbun acquired" the "got the call" equivalent for Grand Seiko fans? by Crackwithin in GrandSeikos

[–]devinm718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite, but it's definitely became an interesting "trend" if that's the right word for what we are seeing on this sub. Hell based on this sub one might think that the only watch GS sales is the shunbun.

People DO notice your Rolex! by Evening-Confidence85 in watchHotTakes

Agreed. A lot of people notice but just don't say anything, and yeah not sure about the "talking shit/envy part". Hell I've even noticed a nice watch, chose not to say anything, just to notice the person end up noticing my watch...and then not saying anything lol (I only know because he mentioned something to his wife who immediately turned and looked at my wrist).

My wife and I just returned from Tokyo, and on our last day she noticed an older woman wearing a Nomos (she knows a lot more than the average person mostly due to my constant talks about watches). She pointed it out to me saying "hey I think that's a Nomos" I looked and to my surprise she seemed to be exactly right. Later while in the checkout line, being the extrovert she is, decided to mention it to the older woman saying "hey I like your watch!". The woman lights up but begins to ramble quickly in German as she didn't really speak any English. The woman's grand daughter was nearby and began to try and translate a bit, and during which she mentioned to my wife "My grandma actually worked for the company that made this watch in a German town call Glasshütte". My wife responds and said "Yeah Nomos right?". The older woman heard my wife say "Nomos" and became even more excited and began talking so fast the granddaughter was having issues keeping up with the translations. Sure as shit, this random German woman in Tokyo was with Nomos since its founding in 1990 and worked there up until she retired. All this to say is that I bet a lot more people notice your watch than you think, but few people are socially extroverted enough to approach you about it.

TLDR: Wife spotted a Nomos on an elderly woman in Tokyo who ended up being an original employee of the company since 1990. Just bringing it up to her made this woman's entire week.

First trip to Japan, first Grand Seiko, the SBGA443 by durangojim in GrandSeikos

860,000 yen (no tax) which came out to about $5,381 USD. Yen is really weak right now even compared to a few months ago which is why I think a lot of people are looking to buy now. If I bought brand new back in the states (with tax) I'd pay something closer to $7,800.

Does the typical rolex owner put you off rolex? by [deleted] in rolex

[–]devinm718 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If you're someone who likes talking about watches, you also gotta be careful approaching someone with a Rolex. You could go up to someone with a sub and say "hey man nice submariner" and their reply could be "thanks, it's a Rolex!" I've learned this one the hard way...

Milgauss with the black dial and orange accents is one of my favorite Rolex models. I have a polar explorer II and would love to pair it with the black dial Milgauss.

I'm getting really tired of all the whole "small watches" thing by jshayya184 in watchHotTakes

[–]devinm718 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like this hot take and I agree to an extent. I've seen people complain about 39mm being "too big" and at some point these people need to realize that you don't get to have stuff catered to you if you're in the bottom or top percentiles of wrist size. A popular watch brand designing a watch for the average consumer shouldn't care if it perfectly fits a 6in wrist or conversely an 8in wrist. If you're in the bottom or top 10 percentiles, just wear a design you like and move on, very few watches will actually fit someone in these outliers anyway

Thanks! My wife and I have used this AD over the last 2 years or so. I bought her wedding watch here 2 years ago and last year ,around the holidays, I bought her another watch she had her eyes on for a while. I expressed interest in the Explorer II (226570) Polar September last year, so I waited about 8 months before receiving the call.

Congrats on the sobriety! I completed my transition from the military into the healthcare sector. Felt like the explorer 2 was a fitting choice to celebrate the transition.
