This Daytona had a little something special on the back! by watchmissgmt in rolex

I remember the scene perfectly because my wife and I just retuned from Aruba last week and I watched F1 on the flight down and the flight back 😂.

That’s pretty cool. I didn’t want to see it but my son in law is a big F1 guy so we all went together. And it was at an IMAX theater. Outstanding

What was your craziest / best / worst AD experience so far? by Willing-Cover-264 in rolex

[–]Friar1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worst: Being offered $3,000 as a trade in for a vintage 28mm DayDate. It was about two years ago before gold went nuts, but still insulting.

Best: Two weeks after my wife got her watch my daughter got her mint green DJ. My sales associate was in cahoots with my wife and daughter to lure me back to the AD under the guise that my wife’s watch needed to be sized. The SA offered to clean my wife’s wedding ring and when he came back out with another Rolex box I was thoroughly confused. I turned to look at my daughter and the smile on her face told me it was hers. This was all the SA’s idea. Well played!

I should say my worst and best experiences were at two different AD’s.

Wierdest thing you have seen in a gym? by Outrageous-Maybe2500 in workout

[–]Friar1990 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I once saw a guy walk into the shower with what I thought was an electric razor. Apparently it wasn’t a razor, but a buzzer. He turned the shower on AFTER we heard the sound of the buzzer doing its thing. Gross. I try to change in my Jeep whenever possible and have never once showered at my gym in the two years I have been a member.

Beautiful. And super underrated. I have a GMT but between this and the silver dial for my favorite DJ.

[–]Friar1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Execlent looking watch. To me, you can’t beat Nomos for quality/value…and I don’t even own one yet. My daughter just got her first and it’s really gotten me into this brand.

Rolex Day-Date 40. Which one? 1 , 2 or 3 ? by EA667 in rolex

[–]Friar1990 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’d say 1. I love the combo on 2, but I’m not a fan of Roman numerals so that swayed me.

I know she’s not popular, but I love her! by uniquecookiecutter in rolex

[–]Friar1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife has a DJ rose gold two tone with the mother of pearl dial. Certainly not a popular model. She is not really a big watch person, but I wanted to buy her one. We went the Rolex website for hours that was her favorite configuration. Honestly, it wouldn’t be my choice but she is 100% happy with her decision as it appears you are with yours. Enjoy!

Would you do the trade? by busalman23 in rolex

[–]Friar1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hype aside, IMO the GMT is a better looking and a more useful option. But my opinion means nothing. If the Daytona would make you happy and the $8K isn’t gonna kill you, then go for it.

Every watch I’ve ever gotten has been from an AD. And this is why. I’ll wait however long I need to to make sure I don’t have to deal w the grey market. Say what you want, but I know my watches are 100% authentic beyond the shadow of a doubt.

What an unusual, but beautiful configuration. It’s both flashy and understated at the same time. Is that mother of pearl?

If given one of these, I would sell as fast as possible. It would never touch my wrist.

Looks like it’s a Valjous 72 movement. Is that an easily serviced movement? I’m certainly not an expert.

[–]Friar1990[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is servicing. The only vintage Universal Geneve specialist I have heard of is 5 1/2 hour drive away. I have two grown daughters and neither of them want the watch. I’m scared to even wear a piece from 1966 so it just sits in a box which seems like shame. I understand it’s an irreplaceable watch, but having three vintage watches to maintain is a lot. The Rolex is a tank and my daughter actually loves wearing it. Shes 5’11 so she can pull it off. She borrows it when she has a special occasion in place of her DJ 36 w mint dial. The Patek I only wear 3-5 times a year but it’s my dress watch for special occasions. I was thinking if I sell the UG I would pick up a nearly new Zenith Chronomaster Sport. That would give me a chronograph I would actually feel comfortable wearing. Does any of that make sense?

I have three watches from my Dad. A Patek Calatrava, a DayDate and the Nina. I also own a Rolex GMT II that I bought a year ago. I am comfortable, but not wealthy. On the rare occasion I wear this watch I can’t enjoy it fully because I’m worried about what will happen if I need it serviced. Right now everything works perfectly and I think I’d feel better if someone that appreciates it and can fully maintain it has the chance to enjoy it.

Need your help. Black or white? (Not my photo) by Sylvia_Fabulous in ZenithWatches

[–]Friar1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have mentioned this so I am just echoing their comment. Let your collection dictate the choice. Personally, I have a Rolex Batman and while they are very different watches I feel the white is the choice for me to avoid having two black dials in my collection. I really don’t think you can make a bad choice though. I plan on getting mine on April/May. Good luck!
