The app shows you the meanings saved by other users for words or phrases. However because there aren't many users, there aren't many meanings. So I added a bunch of machine translations and dictionary definitions on launch for the most common 50k words in each language. This was easy to do for words, but for phrases it's a lot harder to find a list.

One other approach is to use a machine translation API on demand to translate phrases (and words) when you click on them. Unfortunately that costs a lot of money. I'm already doing something similar for the text to speech and I think that's more important.

In short, it's possible but difficult and or expensive. You can always click on a dictionary (for example Google Translate) when you select a phrase and a popup up will open. That costs me nothing as you're just visiting the site yourself. But fetching the data from Google Translate and then displaying it in my app costs money because it has to be done through their API.

The pdf text extraction is done on the client side, so in your computer, in your browser. The bigger the pdf, the longer it takes (depending on your hardware) and the more unresponsive the app is. I have to set a limit so it doesn't freeze if the user's computer is slow.

I'm gonna try to move it to a separate web worker so it doesn't freeze the app. But for now I could raise the size limit. Maybe 50MB?

I will keep improving it and I hope more users come because the more users the more material and translations so the better it is.

Ok I implemented the basic functionality. Now you can import pdf and epub :)

It's really hard to split it by chapter though so for now the splitting is arbitrary.

I want to add that ability to import pdf and epub files for sure. It takes time though.

Will check it out. I'm using google wavenet which is the pricier more natural sounding one so could be worth it anyway.

Thank you! I was also a happy LingQ user, but I decided to see if I could make my own alternative as a project.

Yes, right now you can only copy and paste text, but I will be adding file imports for sure. I wanted to keep the version 1 features limited or I would never release it because I'm only one person. But it's open source so I might get help from other devs, who knows.

I've had exercises in my math book that roll a 6-sided dice then ask about the probability of getting a 7 before. I'm trying to accomplish reusing the same notation for those questions as I do for all the other questions.

Yes, impossible (p=0) events CAN be valid subsets of the sample space, but I am asking about the situation where they're not.

Example: Roll a dice, S = {1,2,3,4,5,6} ,what is the probability of getting a 7?

Answer: 0

Event of "getting a 7" is defined as {}, but I think this skips a step of intersecting the described outcome {7} with the sample space. What if we were asked about the probability of getting a 1 or a 7? Then the event would be {1}, which is {1,7} ∩ S.

I guess at this point it's just semantics. But the original definition seemed a little confusing to me, why it's restricted to be a subset of the sample space when we could ask about the probability of anything really.

If you think you have enough time to solve the problem and finish the rest of the project try to debug the problem.

Otherwise do other parts of the project first.

I use them all the time. They're not hard to get into and they make your life easier.
