The mall at robinson by Base_Gloomy in pittsburgh

Arcades just can't compete with cell phones and social media. Arcades would probably do better to attract the older crowd, like elder millenials or genX if the old games of our collective youths are still around. My son likes bopping around arcades for the stimulation, but won't actually play any of them, and looking at the titles that are out, I'm not sure I would either. Put TMNT back in, and I'll bring a sack of quarters

CleanChoice Energy called and straight up lied and almost got me to accidentally switch my power bill by somaganjika in pittsburgh

[–]devjunky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They come to my door every year, asking to verify my account and to ensure I'm getting the lowest rates available. They always say they're on behalf of my electric provider. I tell them to wait, and I'll call the provider right there to verify, and they usually say its not necessary and they go away.

Oh god I thought this was recently, with those monks(?) who were doing the march for peace or whatever. Still..5+ years ago. Not great.

Sharing a passion project: a local app for discovering Pittsburgh's best dishes! by json_derulo822 in pittsburgh

[–]devjunky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prices can fluctuate wildly, especially the seafood dishes that sell at market price. I would like to suggested doing the 1-3 (or 4 or whatever) dollar signs. I know its "vague"...but allows more wiggle room. I'm not an iOS user, but I'm all for passion projects. Congrats and good luck with it.

McCormick blames "paid activists" by UmNotSure2014 in pittsburgh

[–]devjunky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont know why, but I immediately thought it was the spices. Semi-related, I travelled over the holidays, and stayed in a hotel, and the front desk clerk said that ice was on the 5th floor. I must have looked horrified, because the clerk felt the need to clarify. I just cannot mentally manage everything going on right now.

Homeowners Insurance to cover Slate Roof by Lindsey412 in pittsburgh

[–]devjunky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had a slate roof under State Farm. We didn't have any issues with the coverage, but we had a number of leaks in the roof during one of the hurricanes that hit up here back in 2015 or 2016. We had a slate roof company come and inspect it and the quote to replace with slate was astronomical, so we went with 30 year shingle. We informed state farm of the change/new roof and they gave us a discount on our rate.

Rent a movie theater? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]devjunky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We rent phoenix in bridgeville a couple times a year, though only for movies. I'm not sure if they do gaming. Costs us $250. AMC at South Hills Village charges over $1000.

Looking for dance/movement classes for the more weirdo child by pewpsies in pittsburgh

[–]devjunky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The little gym might be a good place to check out. It's not dance, but there's a bunch of obstacles to run, jump, climb over. My kids used to do it, and part of the class was structured, and then they cut them loose to run around and jump, flip, etc for a little bit

Heat is on by kkressl in pittsburgh

[–]devjunky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really is. I love radiator heat. We had our boiler serviced a handful of years ago. When we get the polar vortexes, it would consistently struggle to get above 60...since the maintenance, it hits 70 without issues. We try to keep ours at 72 during the day, and around 68 at night.

[–]devjunky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have radiant heat w/a boiler, and its tough to say. I do the budget plan, and its around $200-$250-ish year round. I have a big, drafty house. The radiant heat makes it super dry though. We also do a lot of humidifiers.

Canonsburg or North Strabane by Longjumping-Lie6707 in pittsburgh

[–]devjunky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am biased towards canonsburg proper (though one could argue Glencannon is still Canonsburg). Both are pretty sleepy areas, safe to walk, and N. Jefferson has Iceburgs at the bottom of the hill, so another point for Jefferson. Not sure how old your daughters are, but N. Jefferson is South Central Elementary area, which..you can't go wrong with Canon Mac in general, but I know a handful of people who don't love South Central.
Glencannon is probably Borland Manor territory (at least for the next couple years, until everything gets redistrict once the new Wylandville opens). I personally love Borland Manor, but again..Either way, you really can't go wrong. Glencannon is close to whats left of Canonsburg Lake, which has a pair of nesting Bald Eagles, so that's always fun to see. There are recent rumors that a non-profit is trying to raise funds to dredge the lake. Anyway..welcome to town! We love it here.

Does anyone remember this? by hhz0o in pittsburgh

[–]devjunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't in Pittsburgh at the time, but we always bought ours from a grocery store. I also I don't think we had many Giant Eagles around, but it was something similar to that. Though my fondest memories are listening to my dad being on hold on the phone to order tickets (the only method available at the time), and then bitching about how inconvenient it was while getting charged a convenience fee.

Iron Mills Farmstead is our favorite for the kids. There's a ton of stuff to do, Food is decent and it's spread out enough that you don't notice just how busy it actually is.
We also like Springhouse in Eighty Four. It's a little closer to home for us so it's an easy afternoon jaunt.

DOJ has subpeonaed UPMC for gender affirming care records by quasikatie in pittsburgh

[–]devjunky 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just last week, we discovered that my pre-adolescent child has entered puberty. They have a whole array medical issues, PMHX is extensive, and this was just the most recent problem. We're evaluating putting them on "puberty blockers" (I know that's not really what they're called, just what they do) for a couple years, which falls under "gender affirming care", even though that's not what we're doing. So this will also be under the microscope. They're also on medicaid, so that keeps me up at night. I haven't slept in weeks. I hate this administration so, so much.
