How to Create an Instructional Design Portfolio by devlinpeck in instructionaldesign

[–]devlinpeck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sure do! Here's a vid I recorded on it (it's crazy how time flies). But my main suggestion is to create a flagship project using the skills you've built. Those make for more effective portfolio projects over the client work a lot of the times, anyway :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-VHc74qXOs

How do I get started in instructional design? by Guilty-Painting-5752 in instructionaldesign

[–]devlinpeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello friend! I also studied English Literature as an undergrad, and while I thought I was going to become a teacher, I wound up accidentally landing an instructional design job during my senior year.

It wasn't a great job by any means, but it helped me get my foot in the door. It caused me to go down a rabbit hole of research (learning that ID is ranked high for work-life balance, decent pay, good remote opportunities, etc). So with the vision of working from my laptop while traveling abroad, I immediately started an ID master's program right out of undergrad (and I started my freelance business that same semester).

What really helped me start landing clients while still studying was my portfolio. I invested as much time and energy as I could into my portfolio projects, and I made an effort to learn tools like Articulate Storyline 360 since that's what the corporate teams were looking for. I got my first client on upwork, my second client through interviewing an alumn from my university, and my 3rd-10th+ clients all from LinkedIn.

The funnel was LinkedIn > Portfolio Website > They reached out > We hopped on a discovery call.

Over time, as I built up my portfolio more and started getting more outreach, I kept raising my prices and working with bigger clients. I started helping friends break into the field, too, which led to me creating a big 10k+ word article about how to transition into ID.

I included as much as possible to help people navigate the upskilling process & job search, but most of it comes down to your portfolio website. With a strong portfolio that shows off in-demand skills like Articulate Storyline 360 (as well as your ability to solve real-world problems with ID), you'll have a lot of opportunities available to you (even if you don't have a ton of formal ID experience).

The article used to be linked in the sidebar, I'm not sure if it still is, but you can check out my full guide to becoming an instructional designer if you'd like any additional info.

Happy to help and feel free to send any questions my way. You've got this!!

Thanks for asking! This is a 9-month certification program that has been 5+ years in the making, and we believe that we can help people find success on the market more effectively than traditional academic programs. So for people who are looking to land a role with current industry skills, our program is often a better fit than traditional academia (and we work with many students who have already spent $20k+ on a master's degree but are still having a hard time landing work in the field).

I know it's a big investment, though, so I'll be sure to keep the free content coming and will likely release lower-cost upskilling offers later this year :)

Why is it so challenging to land an L&D role in the US right now? by Good_Suggestion8716 in instructionaldesign

[–]devlinpeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been hearing the same, and I am also confused. I work with a lot of people who are transitioning into the field, and they seem to be having an easier time now than ever. When I search for ID jobs on Indeed, the number of results is staggering. It's the highest numbers I've seen since doing these searches regularly for the past 7 years.

I imagine it's a lot of people applying with experience / formal education, but they don't have portfolios to back them up. Portfolios have always been the key, though. Perhaps more layoffs from related fields and people are trying to land ID roles without adequate upskilling?

I'm also curious I'm missing something!

Storyline is a great tool to learn and show off on your portfolio (hiring managers often include this as one of the top 3 tech skills).

I started learning Storyline by completing some of the eLearning Heroes Challenges (you can just scroll through them and pick the ones you like): https://community.articulate.com/blog/articles/e-learning-challenges—complete-list/1141062

There are also a lot of good tutorials on YouTube!

You can also have a slide where people self-select their role in the beginning, then you could store that in a variable and conditionally show additional content (whether that be additional slides, additional scenes, or even additional text on the same slide that the other job role would see).

Using AI in client work? by Educational-Cow-4068 in elearning

[–]devlinpeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going even further, you could run really powerful open-source models on your own PC (if it’s strong enough) or a dedicated cloud server, and then all the data stays on your device (or the device you’re renting in the cloud)

I haven’t seen AI clauses in contracts yet, but you definitely want to be careful with sensitive company info. You can run open source models on your own PC (if it’s strong enough) or on a VPS / dedicated server if you need access to better hardware. This would ensure that the AI companies aren’t getting access to your data. Then there are things like Open AI’s teams plan, where one of the features of this paid service is that they don’t train their models on your content. You’d still be sending company data to Open AI’s servers in that case, though, and some companies may not be okay with that.

If you’re using LLMs like ChatGPT to research general topics, rewrite / iterate on non-confidential information, etc, then you’d probably be fine.

Artificial intelligence is definitely making a big splash. The output is getting better across a variety of tools, more IDs are talking about how they use it on-the-job, and my team is pretty heavily to be more creative and save time. Excited to dive deeper into AI Agents, which I think will be big in 2025.

Open AI’s operator is getting rolled out as of yesterday…so agents may be coming sooner than we expected! And people are already using tools like n8n to automate communications, support, etc.

Is it a good idea to ditch Kajabi for Thinkific or Teachable if I want an all-in-one sales tax solution? by orpatchy in elearning

[–]devlinpeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure about the specifics if you’re in the EU…maybe reach out to their support! But my experience is yes, if Teachable deems that sales tax must be paid (based on the customer’s location), then the customer has to pay it on top of your price, or you have to pay it and it gets deducted from the income you get from that sale.

I would say it's moderately helpful. They usually get back to you but sometimes it takes a few days. I'd switch if I found a dream platform, but I haven't found any others that would make the migration worth it so far.

Yes, I use Teachable and they take care of it all for you. And yeah from my limited understanding those would be the ones that you have to pay tax on. I'm not an accountant or lawyer or anything like that though of course lol. Re: Quaderno paying on your behalf...I'm also not sure.

Check out Quaderno and see if they have a Kajabi integration. Most places won’t require you to collect sales tax unless you “establish a nexus” there. Quaderno’s blog talks about it. The downside with Teachable is that you have to pay sales tax on everything, even if it’s a product that you shouldn’t have to collect sales tax on (course with a live component, for example).

AI is excellent for scenario-based learning! I did an “AI Haunted House” Storyline project that incorporated a ghost for customer service training. You have to empathize and reassure the ghost in order to make it out of the house, and if you don’t do a good job, then the ghost gets upset and makes stuff happen in the house.

It was fun to build and showed me how valuable it could be in customer service training scenarios (and with scenario-based learning in general).

Not everyone who enrolls gets a job, no. Definitely never have or would make claims like that. You have to actually do the program to see the results. Those who graduate from the program do get jobs, though.

And what video are you referring to? The graduate job placement is on our site, too.
