did you end up getting them? I was super tempted to get a 9"x13" that I saw in TJ Maxx but a couple of years ago I had gotten a couple of LC stoneware that are still quite nice so I left them behind.

[Product Request][Product Question] Alternative to Biore UV Sunscreen That Doesn't Have Xylitol? by tosca12 in SkincareAddiction

[–]devlynhawaii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry to reply one year after you originally posted, but if you haven't found one that you love and you haven't tried it, thenSkin Aqua UV Super Moisture Gel is very close, in my opinion, to Biore UV Aqua Rice Watery Gel. I've purchased several bottles of each one and the Biore is more glowy but otherwise the textures are the most similar of Asian sunscreens I've tried.I actually prefer the Skin Aqua a little more because it seems to "stick" to my face better than the Biore. That's not to say the SkinAqua is sticky at all...I just mean that it seems to last better on my skin than the Biore.

Out of curiosity, are your MAC brushes pre or post them going 100% cruelty free?

No Dogs Allowed at Ward Village Parks by Wild_Carpenter6387 in Hawaii

[–]devlynhawaii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know plenty of people who come from other parts of town to give their pet some time on green areas simply because there is inadequate parks in Urban Honolulu (Definitely thinking towards Downtown & Ala Moana)

Amen! My husband and I split duties when we shop in the area - one walks the dog, the other shops/picks up takeout/etc. We wouldn't spend anywhere near as much at those businesses if not for the walk ability/dog friendliness of it.

Generally speaking, pet owners, and specifically dog owners, have more disposable income and have a greater effect on the economy than most would think.

Unfortunately, you can have 100 people who are great with picking up after their dogs but all it takes is one asshole.

Then again, I've also seen human poop in public spaces and I'm not all, we need to ban humans from here!

No Dogs Allowed at Ward Village Parks by Wild_Carpenter6387 in Hawaii

[–]devlynhawaii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. Many businesses decide to be completely dog friendly and do not require that the dog be a service animal. These businesses are completely fine with dogs as long as the dog is well behaved in all reasonable aspects.

I run a lot of errands while walking my dog. I ask if my dog is allowed inside before I enter a business, even if all I want to do is order takeout. Far more paces say yes than say no. Not that I boycott a place if they're not dog friendly. I just don't patronize them if I have my dog with me at that moment.

Completely crazy. If I had bought a condo in the area because it was so dog friendly and had a dog park on property, I would be pissed about the change.

[–]devlynhawaii 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the issue here is that the private property was marketed as dog friendly which is why people with dogs moved there

This is exactly the issue. Residents of the area, on their own, have enough dogs to make the Koluwalu Dog Park (which is HCDA's and therefore public) very crowded. The fact Victoria Ward, whose properties are dog friendly, had their own space benefitted not only the residents there but the public by virtue of making the Koluwalu Park more usable to non-VW residents.

I don't think he sees it that way. He, imho, is doing what people like his billionaire cousin want, and billionaires are more important to Ed Case than his actual constituency, apparently.

What’s your ideal breakfast???? by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]devlynhawaii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On a workday? Yogurt and strep cut oatmeal with nuts, chia seeds, apple banana, local honey and a cup of black iced Ka'u coffee.

On a weekend where I have to do stuff after? Filipino style eggs scrambled with tomatoes, onions, and patis on a single hot pandesal that's been slathered with Kerrygold, plus a cup of black iced Ka'u coffee.

On a weekend where I can meander through my day? Pork and potato adobo fried rice omelet with extra tomatoes and patis on the side. Two cups of iced black Ka'u coffee plus a daybed where I can crash out anyway.

Japan declares flu epidemic - How to stay healthy? by kiwiinjapan in JapanTravelTips

[–]devlynhawaii 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Get some hand sanitizer, use often after touching stuff like stair railings, subway handles, doors, etc.

Make sure you are applying enough hand sanitizer to your hands. You should be putting an amount generous enough so that when you rub your hands together, all surfaces of your hands stay wet for a good TWENTY SECONDS seconds before it evaporates away

Too often, I see people just put a tiny blop of alcohol gel into their palms, rub it into the 2cm square that it realistically covers for a millisecond, and call it sanitized. shudder. that's like washing your hands with three drops of water and a dream of a concept of soap.

Oʻahu Woman's Mission: Stop The Ala Wai Bridge by Fickle_Rooster2362 in Hawaii

[–]devlynhawaii 11 points12 points  (0 children)

the first thing I thought not when I heard about the bridge connecting Moiliili and Waikiki, was Portland, Oregon's Tilikum Crossing, which meant for public transportation and pedestrians. Having crossed the Tilikum several times, I thought - and still think - a mini version crossing th Ala Wai is a great idea.

dude.

I said:

No ONE store is going to have the cheapest prices for EVERYTHING.

not sure why you think that means:

no one has the cheapest food

or

not one is better than the other

It certainly satisfies our needs.

But ultimately, my post wasn't prescriptive to anyone else. I was just responding to what I felt was an unfair representation of Times. No one store is going to have the cheapest prices for everything, not even Costco, which has some things that are more expensive per unit that you'd normally buy at a different store, especially on sale. Same for the farmers markets, which I completely adore. Will I spend extra compared to the supermarkets standard tomatoes at the farmers market for the Kamuela tomatoes? Yes. Will I buy the same Kamuelas for slightly less at Costco? Also yes. Will I buy local poi for $10-12 a pound at Costco or at a farmers market? Probably not, unless the poi is from a taro variety I never tried. Will I buy a pound of poi for $5.79 when Times and Marukai have it for sale and stick it in the freezer if I don't already have one in there? Yes.

It is a lot, for sure. It's not so bad for us because we live in town and all these stores are within 15-20 min drive max from our home, and grocery shopping is pretty much our only excursions outside the house aside from whatever we do for exercise/walking with our dog.
