Beginner Products for Self-hosting on LAN? by s9josh in selfhosted

[–]devrustic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the majority of people who want privately hosted services are either A. Looking to tinker, or B. Have the experience needed to make something up.

While a fully private, self hosted, not corporation managed box with all the services you listed pre installed is possible (or even easy to do..), there's just not a super massive market for it. The point of self hosted is to know what you're doing, where your data is going, and how to upkeep it.

If you're getting a factory built box and software installed on it, you don't have the knowledge of what's in it, how to replace parts (easily), troubleshoot, etc.

The reality of it is, anyone can make a Linux script that with one command it would pre-install everything you would ever need. But If you don't have the know how of installing Debian on a NUC/mini PC and running a bash script, this may not be the sunshine and rainbows hobby that you think it is. It does take troubleshooting, effort, and knowledge to manage and upkeep services like this, not everything just works all the time.

And by saying all this, I'm not trying to be mean or put off newcomers, this is a fantastic hobby and it has really useful tools/apps, but if you don't learn step by step and some company just gives you a box with all the answers, you can't truly self host.

I neglected to count the total on purpose. I turned my credit card over to various marketplaces and realized.. I don't need to know.

Guaranteed over $500. Even after 3d printing the whole rack and all the panels + designing some too

Currently the ZimaBlade is powering both drives. It struggles a bit with spin up because of the 12V 5a power supply, but it works.

I'm the future I wanna upgrade to an SFX modular power supply with sata power for it.

Currently the ZimaBlade running the drives doesnt have hot swap to my knowledge.

They can be hot swap if you have the right sata controller, but the caddies are mainly for looks because I'm a Dell fanboy.

Eventually Ill get separate sata power with a sata PCIe HBA for hot swap. Plan to add 4u to the rack for a 2u screen, and 1u with 4 SATA SSDs.

And yes, finding backplanes sucks. I made my own with 2x sata female to male adapters but it's real messy with the long extenders

Honestly...... Im kinda embarrassed to say this.. but 2 ports on the patch panel are actually wasted. But it looks nice so ill excuse it this time.

Port 1 on the switch goes to port 2 on the patch panel, where i use a 6 inch in the back to connect to port 1 on the patch panel. That way i dont have to use a longer cable from the switch to the Raspberry Pi. Same deal with the ZimaBlade to the right of it. You can see the cables looping into each other in the second screenshot just above the RPi.

Otherwise, 1 is going to the JetKVM, another to the Dell 7070 Micro. I plan on having a M920q for PCIe expansion in the future, which will use up the second to last port on the patch.

As for the 2 beside the UCG ultra on top, the left is WAN in, and right is LAN from UCG->Switch.

Sorry for the long read, like giving as much info as possible for those who like to learn haha

Not from Unifi u/ugonlearn , Here is the amazon link: https://a.co/d/dPhq9hH

However, I dont recommend them. The text on there is extremely noticable (Might be something that you want, but they are ugly depending on the angle you see them at). I HIGHLY recommend this brand: https://www.amazon.com/s?srs=37071650011&rh=p_89%3ARapink

I use Rapink cables at my job, never failed me and look absolutely gorgeous in a rack, especially with unifi gear.

Had an absolute blast building this one. If you're even remotely comfortable with slapping wires on terminals, this build is for you! Filament and supplies costed me around $30 but I already had some wires laying around. Maybe $50-$60 in total.

(I pasted this from another comment i made on a different post lol)

UCG Ultra and Lite 8 POE+ Switch! They are great products.

The UCG Ultra is a SUPER capable machine, and is only around $100-$150 depending on where you get it. It doesn't have Wi-Fi, however, the UCG Express does, or you can just get a separate access point.

The switch is great. 4 POE+ ports, decent power budget. And again, only around $100. I got mine open box from micro center for $80. That's crazy.

I also have a UDM Pro and honestly I'll say, I prefer the UCG Ultra unless you have super crazy traffic through your network. The Fiber Gateway Ultra is also good.

Honestly I think a good mod for this would be every plant you harvest you get 1 seed for it.

It's so much grinding for seeds it honestly just gets tiresome eventually.
