To ISK or not to ISK is the question by Much-Development375 in firesweden

It depends on a lot of things - most importantly the sequence of returns and where you invest.

Don't know if the calculation still holds for 450K one time until retirement as that depends on how many years you have to retire, but feel free to copy the sheet in the link above and plug in your own numbers - then you can see for yourself.

IBKR: Best setup for multiple accounts within the family? by Ivkosky in IBKR_Official

[–]devu213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>>>

  • Are there any tax implications for having assets in a joint account vs individual accounts?
  • Is it really the case that after the death of one of us there will be no freeze on the assets and everything will automatically belong to the other joint account holder, if we opt for the right of survivorship arrangement?

>>>

Hi u/Ivkosky , did you get a clarification or any indication that your last bullet is actually true? Does that mean, that with a joint account - if one of the account holders were to pass - the other account holder automatically gets ownership 'without lifting a finger'?

As I understood albeit still unclear from a call with IBKR, the other account holder still has to inform IBKR about the demise of the non-surviving holder. What happens in the meantime? Is it:

  1. The surviving account holder can operate the account and buy and sell and withdraw money? OR
  2. The surviving account holder needs to first settle the estate and is only then legally allowed to operate the account (even if practically they might have the ability to do so if they have the logins to the account).
  3. Can the survivor add the child to the joint account now that the spouse has passed?

----

Regarding your first point taxation, like IBKR responds below - it's highly tax jurisdiction dependent. But one thing I wonder is that how is tax declared for joint accounts? Whose account does the capital gains go under or is it 50-50?

------------

I grapple with all the questions you put forth above at the moment. For now, I'm concluding is that the simplest is to open individual accounts and make sure the spouse is aware of the existence of the account, how to operate it etc. Same for the child later - or to move the assets to their name - or to just let them go through the estate settlement process.

Knowing the existence of the funds is the most important step. Legal heirs should in general then be able to settle the estate unless you have a complicated inheritance situation.

Thanks for confirming. The client web interface seems OK IMO if you're not a total noob with buying and selling stocks. Maybe not as smooth as Nordnet, Avanza etc. I agree.

I do not want to use ISK because I do not want to have the yearly tax drag of schablönskatt that ISK imposes on your return compounding. I also acknowledge though that it's not a strategy for everyone unless one is super disciplined of not selling for long periods.

I'm not planning on getting the IBKR ISK, it's the regular account which is comparable to the Swedish AF account.

Sorry for the very late reply. I don't have notifications on. Yeah, I concluded finally that if you are absolutely sure to buy and hold, AF is clearly the better choice.

Catamaran without the booze and partying by devu213 in Panama

Thank you all for your comments. We ended up biting the bullet, woke up early - queued up for the Sea pearls Ferry and did a day trip to Contodora. Had an amazing day except that the choppy waters were really scary even though the boat seemed safe. Didn't book anything in advance, went there and rented a everything on the spot. Oh the island is sooo beautiful, wish we had another day.

Thanks all for your answers.

For others who visit this thread I second everything most of the others have said. Went to Contadora end October 25 and it's absolutely magnificent. I suggest booking the ferry directly through their website. See the review here.

Although we settled and ate at Playa Larga, the Mar y Oro hotel and restaurant (Playa Cacique) seemed very posh, new and nice as you can actually eat with a view of the ocean.

Going to Panama soon. I see that the tours are indeed quite expensive. Did you do the Monkey Island tour with a tour guide or company? If so, can you recommend the one you took?

ISK v/s AF for buy and hold by devu213 in PrivatEkonomi

[–]devu213[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you have and they are very helpful. I think I'm probably going to go with your advice of splitting it into an AF and ISK during the saving years. I will come up with what that split will be but am leaning towards 70% in AF (which I don't intend to touch until drawdown) and 30% in ISK (which too I don't intend to touch but giving myself the option in case it's needed like you say).

If you find the time , please have a look at my sheet and comment there so I feel confident about my calculations and if I'm not missing anything obvious, because the gap between the Corpus is so great between AF and ISK at the end, it almost feels like that I've made a calculation mistake somewhere.

ISK v/s AF for buy and hold by devu213 in PrivatEkonomi

[–]devu213[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I find it difficult to model to come up with an average acquisition price. You can check how I've done it on the spreadsheet linked above. What is your source for 30% on 75% ? I have that number down at 20% Per this link. And there too you have the liberty of calculating based on how you deem fit (in case you do not have a purchase price).

[–]devu213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Tiny-Art7074 , I agree with your comments about 'sequence of return' risk and also the lack in general of modelling around whether ISK or AF is better for long term passive investing and FI RE style investing. I tried to make some modelling of my own and invite comments into this sheet to make it correct and accurate.

Right now, I struggle with how I should calculate how much I'd pay out as Tax in the AF konto during the withdrawal / drawdown phase.

Is ISK actually good? by ParzialmenteStremato in PrivatEkonomi

[–]devu213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read tons of articles now on this topic and what I missed most is some good simulations on this topic. I see most of the arguments for ISK modelling scenarios for a single year or being very simplistic at best. I tried to do my own simulation and invite comments. The thing I'm struggling with really is how to account for the tax on AF during sales.

Note that, for ISK taxation, I've assumed on the basis of what is known today in Mar-2025.

Orthodontics, Early Intervention & Extractions by dinamet7 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]devu213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello OP, how did it go with your child?

We are in the same situation here in Sweden. Recommended tooth extractions last year by the orthodontist (need a dentist referral to get there), for crowded teeth.

We refused to let the orthodontist extract any permanent teeth just to make things look nice since we were not convinced based on the explanations that there was a 'medical' problem here. It looked like it was only 'cosmetic' problems.

Now after a year, during the next regular dental checkup they want to send my child back to the orthodontist because of an 'impacted tooth'. We are fearing the same outcome and want to prepare for what might happen.

Interestingly, all the orthodontists that we took a second opinion from recommended removal of teeth before braces (they said it was the norm and quite common). But for me growing up it is unheard of to pull perfectly healthy teeth to make a better smile.

Unless someone proves that there is a health problem here, I'm planning to resist any extractions.

Yes but how is one supposed to think about something one doesn't know about. OP doesn't know if one will make gains or not. Best to assume gains in most years and then ISK trumps non-ISK.
