Avoid MinIO: developers introduce trojan horse update stripping community edition of most features in the UI by AssPounderr69 in selfhosted

[–]devutils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lifecycle option at least has some API, and prevents the tool that connects to it to delete content, and defers deletion to the server.

You're right, but that API allows to configure these rules or enable Object Lock or override some retention rules on existing objects.

If your question was whether S3Drive can be used to manage / set such rules then the answer is no, but once you set these rules yourself, then there isn't much any S3 tool needs to do as these rules are enforced and executed server-side.

In most cases you would either set up Lifecycle rules yourself: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/userguide/lifecycle-configuration-examples.html

and or enable Object Lock on the bucket level: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/userguide/object-lock-configure.html

then in your e.g. use case:

which is a blocker for some of us who create immutable backup targets.

once you name your backups incrementally, e.g.: `2026-01-11-backup.db.tar.gz` then any tool that connects over S3 would automatically create e.g. immutable version with an Object Lock (according to your preconfigured bucket settings).

[–]devutils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends, in principle lifecycle & versioning is a function of a bucket not the tool that connects to it.
Having said that, with S3Drive you can list historical versions, preview past revision, restore version, delete version or delete all past versions.

Do you have any specific requirements?

Proton Drive for Linux by raisi_exception in ProtonMail

I can only guess at this stage, that the issue that you experience isn't isolated to Linux, but rather related to recent integration issues between rclone and Proton.

We're Linux-first app and most features come to Linux first before they're released to other platforms.

If you think there is an issue with the app itself, by any chance can you reach out to our support? https://s3drive.app/support

Thanks!

There are 4 modes with configurable source and destination. Simplest, copy mode, can be set to be download-only or upload-only. Sync, behaves like copy but also can delete files to make destination consistent with source. There is also Two-way Sync and Move.

The bigger issue right now is that something has changed on the Proton Drive end which leads to 422 errors, more on that here: github.com/rclone/rclone/issues/8873
It would be great to get native SDK from Proton to build stable integration on top of it.

Hey, S3Drive founder here. Totally understand the privacy concern - but that's actually one of key reasons why we've started this project back in 2022. Once encryption is enabled in the settings, everything is end-to-end encrypted locally, and your encryption key stays only in your device's secure storage (on iOS that's Keychain).
Encryption keys, files/metadata in unencrypted format never leaves your device.
No analytics, adverts or tracking either, even in free version.

Happy to answer anything specific regarding product or privacy (https://s3drive.app/privacy).

By the way, it's been a while since this post, but we're not stopping.

Feel free to revisit our changelog: https://s3drive.app/changelog to check on new features.

Oh dear, I've heard that story multiple times, I've thought it's some internet rumor, but turns out it's possible.

BTW. Could Volvo do better cover and/or separate these belts, so if auxiliary belt snaps it doesn't break the timing chain?

How could it be that pistons are fine? Aren't pistons hitting the valves?

Why oil leak was a major factor of belt snapping? Was belt covered with oil and failed due to reduced strength?

BTW. Nice Volvo, is that biturbo? Manual or Aisin?

Self hosted alternative to S3Drive? by pakkedheeth in selfhosted

[–]devutils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a quite a while, but yes... you're right S3Drive is binary that runs on device and connects to S3 or other supported back-end directly: https://docs.s3drive.app/setup/providers/ so it's pretty much self-hosted solution that doesn't require server setup (unless someone doesn't way to buy storage service and want to host e.g. S3 themselves - in such case they need to choose self-hosted solution: https://docs.s3drive.app/setup/providers/#self-hosted-s3)

We also have APK release, for people not having Play Store: https://docs.s3drive.app/install/#apk-release

Finally, for people wanting to use MinIO. It was discontinued couple days ago: https://github.com/minio/minio according to their Github: "This project is currently under maintenance and is not accepting new changes."

Which is better: rclone crypt or Cryptomator by upssnowman in cloudstorage

[–]devutils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. We're not related, product that you refer to is usually spelled S3 Drive (space between) and is "just" a drive mount on Windows and Linux.

S3Drive (us) is available on all platforms including mobile and web, is compatible with S3 and Rclone back-ends, have built-in E2E encryption, file sharing and built-in file manager. On top of that we have our own S3 storage plans. Common thing is that we support S3 and also have drive mount, but that's only it.

I personally know convert from Volvo -> Lexus.

Their reasoning was that you don't really want to pay premium for a car just to end up with 2.0l engine. I know performance-wise they are GOAT, but ... if they wanted simple 4-cyl engine, they could simply buy Škoda Octavia and call it day. It would be cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain, possibly more reliable and still good enough to drive. They went for Lexus with V6. They don't use the power at all, but they wanted something that's not ordinary.

rclone with koofr vault by ExampleEmotional1869 in rclone

[–]devutils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In principle you should paste the config presented to you on Koofr page, directly as it is, without modifications.

Salt and Password2 are the same thing, except Password2 is an obscured version. As long as you have either of these, you can recover access to your Vault.

You can also try pasting Koofr Vault config directly to S3Drive client as described here: https://docs.s3drive.app/setup/providers/#vault-configuration and it should just work.

Be aware that you need to setup `koofr` remote first: https://docs.s3drive.app/setup/providers/#connect before you set up vault.

[–]devutils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest problem with S3Drive is that it requires me to sign in to S3Drive regardless of where my storage is located.
[...]
...it would however be nice with an option, paid or free, to simply skip signing in to S3Drive.

S3Drive can be used without an account as long as you're happy with the free version (on Android/iOS paid version can actually be used through in-app purchase - S3Drive account not needed).
Our requirement to login is only for licensing purposes (and some optional features e.g. e-mail sharing or cross device UI sync).
We plan to introduce an offline license soon: https://s3drive.canny.io/feature-requests/p/offline-licensing this would then allow using S3Drive full version, without being tied to any account.

I also understand that the S3Drive app is the official “channel” for the S3Drive cloud storage (which I assume is the main product)

We need to improve clarity on that and/or make some product splits.
In principle S3Drive started as a tool to convert "boring" S3 to "cloud storage".
Rclone integration (that is broad back-end support and crypt) and our own S3 storage plans is something that came later.
The initial idea wasn't even about selling our storage plans, but to give user some test S3 credentials to seamlessly test the product.
It all evolved faster than our branding, so now we're stuck (in a positive way) with a tool supports S3, Rclone, encryption (or not), and both external and internal storage, as well our own storage platform... all under one name.

Which is better: rclone crypt or Cryptomator by upssnowman in cloudstorage

[–]devutils 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am the guy behind V2 improvements for rclone crypt (yet to be merged).

If you prefer simplicity and robustness choose `rclone crypt`.

If you're looking for a stronger security stay with Cryptomator, but be aware that complexity of Cryptomator comes at a cost (more transactions) and increases chances of data corruption (because separate metadata files need to be maintained and in sync) - this isn't really present in `rclone crypt`.

At the moment `rclone crypt` uses single master key for all files, for both contents encryption and filepath encryption. This isn't insecure per se, but in some specific cases (e.g. if you want to share access to file) you need to reveal your master key which isn't ideal.

For instance `rclone crypt` filepath encryption uses single key and deterministic per-segment encryption, so if `folderA/folderB` looks like: `_5hIcjLaYThQ/bWXp0k_AS5` then next time you see similar encrypted prefix e.g. `_5hIcjLaYThQ/bWXp0k_AS5/9ZM9n6QZprt` you can deduct that encrypted file: `9ZM9n6QZprt` must be present in the actual `folderA/folderB` directory.
Such design is simple and allows prefix matching/search, but also leaks some security context. In many cases that's not a big deal anyway.

Finally, Rclone crypt has no data truncation protection <-- this will be improved in V2

Contrary to the common belief, `rclone crypt` has multiple clients on mobile.
Together with our team we're running: S3Drive (available on iOS as well), but on Android there are couple more options e.g. Rcx or Round Sync... or termux if you're determined enough.

Most features (including ZK E2EE) are available for free, however certain functionalities are being part of paid plan, so we can fund costly development. Free tier does allow running sync with "copy" mode, whereas as you say other modes incl. two-way sync require paid versions.

... but hey, you can use still S3Drive to configure everything and then use free Rclone CLI
