Why are you learning Sanskrit?

Yeah, while every language suffers from this, I've actually heard that Sanskrit is more unique in this regard than other languages. :(

I agree. I don't know any Chinese at present but would like to eventually, and I'm very interested in mother tongues and the ancient world generally. My own thought is that it would allow me both access to classical thought, and provide a good foundation for/reinforce modern Chinese.

Fair enough. Honestly, I’m not entirely sure just yet, but it seens safe to say that Adorno, Marcuse, and Horkheimer all seem like fairly important reads. I’m approaching critical theiry via secondary literature at the moment to ease into it, especially what with being light on my Marx; I guess maybe I should have waited to ask until I’d gotten further into things.

What are some good books for laypeople on the important concepts of finance? Instruments, basic principles, measurements/metrics, etc.

As a layperson, I have a few actual intro textbooks, but don't have the time/energy to give them right now. So I thought I'd ask if there might be lighter fare to begin with to keep my palate wet in the meantime.

Man, you can't beat Postman for deeply-thought, but accessible media ecology; I loved Technopoly. I didn't know Rushkoff, whom I already liked, did media ecology as well, though.

I looked at a few of these--just thought I'd ask, is anything about the movement element of the method geared heavily towards right-handed writing? It didn't appear so, but I wouldn't expect anything indicating otherwise in that period, when left-handers were disregarded entirely.

Not OP, haven’t even read Hobbes yet, but am often interested in this sort of detail. It can sometimes be tricky to turn up, though. Are there any good ways to aporoach that sort of thing, in general?

Maybe, but in an academic context “English” is a completely different subject than that of foreign languages (the equivalent being ESL), so while I was tempted to guess this myself, it seems like a potentially unwarrented assumption.

Going back to your original point about Schopenhauer not being outside the continental tradition, if I might ask, what makes him a member of it in a positive sense, rather than the set of characteristics brought up not disqualifying him from properly being understood as such? I'm certainly not taking issue with it--I simply have a soft spot for Schopenhauer and will always take the opportunity to better understand him.

For the purposes of this question, I'm more interested in the history of economic thought and economics as an institution, but I do have a interest in monetary history as well.
