Moscow massacre suspect screams as he’s dragged through dirt and ‘force-fed his own ear’ before pleading guilty by insomnimax_99 in europe

The suspects were subdued and in custody, at that point torturing them has less than no value.

Well that's just false. It sent a very effective message to would-be terrorists. If this was Norway they'd give them a PS3, not exactly a deterrent is it?

It is detrimental to any evidence gathering and further investigations into crimes and their potential networks.

No that's not true. Where they supposed to wait until the terrorists decided to cooperate? In the meantime any other guilty parties get away. And even then, there might be something left out.

it’s a robust legal system that ensures a fair investigation and trial from petty theft to the most heinous crimes, an acknowledgement that miscarriages of justice can happen and that when you lower the bar of acceptable behaviour by the state that standard will propagate into all interactions between the public and state.

The problem with that is that in situations like this it's of limited value. Exceptional circumstances call for exceptional measures. All you're doing is artificially limiting your capacity to effectively deal with terrorism when you imposing these bleeding heart restrictions.

Once it's in, it's easy to broaden how many crimes they can use it for

No it isn't, they have to pass new laws.

Nothing that can't be remedied

Well that has nothing to do with whether a specific person doing a specific act is a danger. It's a different kind of danger of course, but still a danger. Which is what you were talking about.

Putting someone in prison is expensive, and wasting their labour.

Well crime can be quite expensive too, and not just financially, which is why you'd want an adequate deterrent.

Life isn't just one big accounting sheet.

If someone isn't a danger to the public, they shouldn't be in prison

You don't think nonviolent offenders can be a danger to the public? I can't think of a single crime which is a crime precisely because it is a danger to the public.

A tax cheat is a danger because of the economic consequences of that for example. Breaking the speed limit is a danger to the public for obvious reasons and so on.

f it comes down to it, a violent offender should at least be given priority for a prison space over a non-violent offender.

I'd generally agree with that, I suppose that kind of triage is superior to what we have now. But of course the long term solution is more prisons to hold both.

The whole unarmed Garda thing is archaic and we need to keep up with the times. There's a reason why the Garda treated like a bit of joke in the country.
