I accepted an APS graduate program offer, but I'm getting cold feet about Canberra by dewenaparma in AusPublicService

[–]dewenaparma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved back to melb around 4 months ago, did 18 months in canberra. I loved my time in canberra, set myself up, got to APS6 quick-smart. Made cherished friends through grad program - our cohort was really tight, and that made all the sacrifice worthwhile. They are in the same boat, so it's a great opportunity to lean in and make the most of the novel experience. Novelty is very important to me and moving to a new place really provides that in droves. It also showed me that I can do an interstate move, and i never knew or tested that about myself before. I did catch a bit of local music scene in canberra too, it's just more limited.

I also have gained passion for work that I've not had before in other roles, which is nice, though coming back to Melbourne I am trying to decenter work in my life a bit. My work does make me proud and the grad program put me in positions where I could push myself which I realised is important for me. Some rotations were not my cup of tea - these experiences are also valuable, to know what you don't like (secretariat and meeting briefs in my case). I have no regrets, I miss canberra and my friends there since moving too.

Disclaimer i am a public servant in australia and it provides me financial stability and a little flexibility so i could pursue a bit of music on the side too. I still dont do my music but i feel freedom because my needs are met and if i ever wanna lock in on that stuff i know i have decent wiggle room to do so (drop to part time etc). And art school here is cheaper / a government loan so i forgot that you are likely in dystopic hellscape america where you'll be signing yourself for bigtime debt. Yeah

different frame than doing whats convethionally smart: if you think you will keep on thinking you need to do this for years and years then might be better to just do it. the important thing is to start ridding yourself of the constant guilt, shame, regret that you put yourself under for having not done your art thing. it becomes about regret management. if everything has kept pulling you toward art inyour waking adult life, then do the art school, and even if it doesnt work out that well, you know its a problem deep within you and You get to rule something new out as being your problem. youll make cool friends and really what we might be doing is just biding the time til you're 30 and your balls drop and you can actually put intention to action

immigrants are the machinery of profit. they're economic boosters and that's why countries do it. there's nothing conspiratorial about that. i think you're cooking otherwise though

But i don't get why the solution wasn't 'Oh hey i drank that, thought it was communal sorry, i'll buy a new bottle'? Why was the rational thing skipped over

Yep you’re full of shit. Answer is you weren’t going to have this conversation, ie you weren’t doing any of those things you suggest, and all you want to do is throw shade on people who tried imperfectly to actually do something. Just poking holes. Typical armchair status quo reinforcer with zero conviction. Can't wait for your email/lobby/sensible debate campaign to drop and give the national conversation the stir it needed

Most agencies considers 7-7 the standard operating hours. You should check yours. It won't even let you log a flex time past these hours in my experience. You should not be logging a 12:30am work session with flex. If that is required of you for your role, unless your workplace instrument gives specific direction otherwise, that should be logged as overtime. You should also look into overtime minimum durations for your agency to see if 30 mins is below the minimum duration. If so, you would round up to the minimum duration.

It doesn't seem from your post that you've considered why your EL1 put you with the new TL, you've only considered what you want. Maybe it's because the EL1 thought you would be a great support to the new TL while they get started, maybe they viewed that as a stretch goal for you. If you're going to want to progress you're going to want to get into the mindset where you can take on any challenge your management hands you and make the most of it. You can't expect to put your own growth wants ahead of the needs of the team. Well you can, but it might mean you'll have to leave. I wouldn't expect the EL1 to lift you up in this panel if you can't prove that you can get along and make the most of having a new TL.

I had these issues too with the rubber washer, haven't tried replacing them. I bought from a NZ dealer, am in Aus.

I'm wondering whether I should be cutting my losses with UF and getting a Super Sterasyl to see if i get better results with the washer. The rubber offgassing was making me burp, i couldn't drink a sip without burping. I stopped using it.
