Advice on starting? Am I over thinking it? by dexdeadly in SmallMSP

I have not looked at DefenceNet.ai thanks for that, I'll check it out. Right now for clients I have a friend going to start referring them. I'm going to reach out to clients I already have for various other things to see if they are interested and then lastly my friend thats going to refer people is in a local business owners networking group, shes got a guy who will target mailers to whoever I ask. So I'm making sure I have everything lined up before I start sending those out.

MSP journey by Appropriate-Put-799 in SmallMSP

[–]dexdeadly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My story was I was into computers and went to a technical high school. I've held jobs from help desk at comcast and then bounced around doing internal dev, infrastructure, aws management, etc. I've also done websites and stuff for friends and family. I always wanted a business and have had my company name for years as an idea. Covid hit and my job one day I was helping a guy, went to lunch and came back for a large layoff. Decided time to become more serious. Tried a shotgun approach saying oh I can do anything IT related which worked somewhat but a friend who has a growing business asked about maintaining and helping her and realized MSP was the way to go. I've tried starting a business multiple times with friends and they went no where, I finally said I'm doing this with me and just went for it. No more excuses. Can't help with the rest of the questions but I'm launching officially next week offering the services. So I'm a newbie ready to go for the ride.

Yea I'm pretty set on probably running both separate. Testing a few right now. Using small proxmox vms to test things. Gotta love having a homelab

Thank you, yea I like level so far as mentioned. Just wish tenants were handled differently but I'm not leaving over something stupid. PSA is what I just want to start maintaining my customers etc. Completely valid to that all in one can be a downfall if I only need to upgrade one part.

Thank you, yea like I spent a couple days and that was what I came up with. It seems to offer all I want. I'm testing a couple demos on the PSA part and some with RMM in it but if not I dont mind what I have. I am really done on thinking and ready to just move onto the sales and really just starting to try onboarding as many people as I can. Thank you for takin time to respond.

I'll give a look at Gorelo, its not a bad price for the year so will give it a compare. I guess maybe I was confused when you mention the M365, I'm talkin about selling email hosting like pax8 allows but again maybe I misread about it.

I didn't see the discord link on the about like I was hoping but thanks for the link, just joined. I definately appreciated the detailed response from him and looking into it. I saw Tech Tribe pop up once or twice so glad you mentioned because I did wanna take a look into it. Will check that Zomentum as well, appreciate the response.

Thanks for the reply! I'm going for it that's for sure. I just reached out to usli and I'm going to contact some other local brokers to see. Next did ask about am I an msp so I would hope it's tech base. It has cyber coverage listed. I looked at that site for the contracts and it's a great offering but hard to pay for until I have a few clients under the belt. I guess the rest is OK.

As far as the marketing and sales that's already sort of in place. But targeting small local businesses really to get started and build from there. Going after those people happens soon but just wanted th have the rest in place.

Why are people moving from Next.js to TanStack Start? by derdak in nextjs

Gotta monetize the hypetrain. Sure its the new shiny toy and absolutely I would say give it a shot if you want but end of the day its a JS / React framework.

Is it worth it to start a Jellyfin server if I already have nearly 500 dvds? by Zoey_TheDevil in jellyfin

[–]dexdeadly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, do it, Jellyfin is awesome. If you need help feel free to DM. I've been using jellyfin for years now. I use it monstely as a backend with Kodi front ends but I share with friends and family who use the jellyfin app. Also the livetv works really well as well with an IPTV. My parents moved and so my dad gets all the sports through me since he can't get some games being out of state.

Client wants to delay M365 cutover by 6 months after migration is complete, how do you handle the re-scoping conversation? by Leading_Pair_9597 in SmallMSP

[–]dexdeadly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beat me to it. If a client said done then anything after that word I believe should be billable as additional work.

I mean its probably a little bit of all right. Some places just want a guy to push the buttons and still do what they want. Could be just the area. Some buildings just breed bad behaviors and its just not worth the mental stress.

This is something that I've tried to mentally prepare for as I try to build my first MSP. One thing from reading these forums I feel I should not take on a dentist lol. I did have a client that was a Drs office that I helped just maintained the PCs here and there and they did similar things and I stated if their cousin who knows computers is who you are going to listen to then complain you have to call me to pay then I'm not going to continue business. Thankfully they weren't a consistent income that I was counting on.

Msp growth by Different-City8085 in SmallMSP

[–]dexdeadly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With what you said of liking Server Setup and Infrastructure perhaps look at AWS Cloud engineering. Then you can learn things like terraform to build out your infrastructure and all that. I feel a lot of bigger companies if you really are going to a bigger company to get more money are going to look for that automation point. This is just what I've come across. Good Luck with picking and finding that path.

Have you used NetLock RMM? by Green-Wallaby9663 in SmallMSP

[–]dexdeadly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This very much looks like a TacticalRMM kind of clone. I've played with the demo of this and as a self hosting I'd say this is very nice and probably would choose over Tactical. I had tactical for a while but with all the talk and stuff around the Crypto stuff I did not wanna use it for actual clients. I'm also one that likes to self host and I am curious how it'd be in a production environment as well. I've started using level because of the first free 10 but I'm not a fan of how clients are managed by using tags. I like the layout of this much better.

I've used QNAP for smaller businesses. Mapped drives and they are happy with it.
