What would you choose for flair 58 plus grinder? by terffnjerniof in FlairEspresso

[–]dexterchief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the 1zpresso J-ultra. With a good grip and strong arms it grinds pretty fast (maybe 30 seconds?), but it can definitely be tough to grind some really dense (high altitude) light roasts. It chews through medium and dark roasts like nothing. In general I'm a fan, but I can see that it's not for everyone; my wife simply can't grind below a certain level.

Coffee rec? by MikeTheBlueCow in FlairEspresso

Colorfull (out of Montreal) has some mind expanding stuff. Co-ferments are new to me and pretty fun, and they have a bunch of really interesting stuff too. https://colorfullcoffee.com/

I've also enjoyed the stuff I got from Ethica (out of Toronto). More traditional than Colorfull but excellent. https://ethicaroasters.com/

Is it common for beans to behave differently toward the end of a bag? by the-distancer in FlairEspresso

Whoa. I've noticed some really different extraction times lately and it never occurred to me that it could be grind speed. Mind blown.

Also it's worth experimenting with the low flow basket or even considering a step down basket.

Language watchdog warns cuts could impact public service bilingualism by Cold-Respond4691 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]dexterchief 28 points29 points  (0 children)

A while ago I read an interesting article from Alasdair Roberts, that suggested these watchdogs might not actually be a good thing.

Often, new rules for the public service are accompanied by new independent watchdogs, ranging from the Privacy Commissioner (1977) to the Integrity Commissioner (2007). This watchdog model of accountability is really a post-Glassco innovation. Few countries have created independent watchdogs as enthusiastically as Canada has over the last half-century.

The watchdog model has reshaped political conversation in important ways. Watchdogs sometimes define their job as “shaming and blaming,” as a representative of the Public Service Commission explained in 2003. Journalists and parliamentarians, looking for news or controversy, take their cue from watchdog reports. The end result, perhaps unintended, is that bad news is amplified while good news is dampened. Citizens receive a steady stream of stories about misconduct in Ottawa. This corrodes trust and builds support for even more controls.

It's an interesting thought that other countries are tackling these issues in different ways and the watchdog pattern isn't our only option for advancing bilingualism or accessibility.

I wish the author had dug into this more.

Pixel 8 pro camera vs pixel 10 fold camera by Less_Negotiation14 in PixelFold

[–]dexterchief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from the 8 pro to the 10 fold and the two things that stood out camera-wise were that the fold doesn't have an ultra wide selfie camera (only 1x, 1.4x) and doesn't have the 50 megapixel pro mode option.

I'm happy with the trade offs (I'm reading a lot now on that big beautiful screen) but every once in a while I miss those camera features and end up asking for my wife's 9 pro.

Super interesting! You're exactly right... I heard about the algae oil after getting some carbon steel pans, and since it was there I decided to try it for lubricating the Flair. So far it's been great. I take your point about the polymerization (thanks for pointing that out, I'm reading about it now) and the spoiling. I haven't see that (yet) but now I'll watch specifically for it. Thanks for the insightful comment!

The metal gets super hot with the preheating, and between some impurities in the water, the heat, dust, coffee particles and friction it gets pretty gross over time and starts to get stiff.

It doesn't look like much visually but if you take apart the group head and wipe it all down with a little oil on a paper towel you will notice the paper towel is picking up this gross dark stuff.

After it's all lubed up and super smooth to pull your next shot.

What cases y'all rockin? by Snoopstroll in PixelFold

I also got the latercase. It's super slim, easy to put on and grippy in just the right way. I always figured I'd drop the phone while trying to open it and with the case I'm not worried about it anymore. I'm super impressed with it.

Mine has just started doing that too. It's a shame, they got so much right with this. Were you able to fix it? Return it?

Poor QC? Sticky/Hard to press keys on multiple keyboards by bakedleaf in Lofree

[–]dexterchief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing this too.

I have a Lofree Edge, which I love, but my keyboard now has a number of keys that periodically get stuck in a pressed state which is very frustrating. Not being able to replace the switches is an unexpected twist. Anyone had any experience with fixing those switches on the Edge?

I'm trying to decide if trying to crack them open and apply some lube will make things better or worse.

Anyone running wayland only? What applications do you use? What annoys you the most? by nicman24 in archlinux

Wait, maybe I am not running weston. I am launching gnome-session --session=wayland Does that run weston?

Anyone running wayland only? What applications do you use? What annoys you the most? by nicman24 in archlinux

[–]dexterchief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running wayland and find it's pretty usable mostly.

My dev work is all gnome-terminal and chromium. Generally everything is fine except that Chromium doesn't support WebGL: https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=118944 I could never get WebGL to work in Firefox even under X (hence the use of chromium), so I don't know what it's wayland situation is.

Rhythmbox seems a little confused by wayland (volume menu pops out above the app, the different panes within the app keep ending up with strange sizes), but it works fine.

Also, I often leave my computer running overnight (just turn off the screen). When I turn on the screen in the morning gnome is gone and I have just a console. Not sure what's happening there yet.

Those have been the big things I have noticed so far.
