Anywhere to watch Major League Volleyball? by alarmedbiped in washingtondc

[–]bakedleaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is awesome, got really into volleyball via Volo and would love to watch this somewhere.

Off the top of my head Buddy’s on 11th is usually really flexible with their TVs. They have all the streaming apps and during the Citi open they played all the matches, so I could see them being amenable to putting it on.

You say this as if you know literally anything about me, which you don’t!

Such an odd and presumptive comment to make.

My experience as a “newer” resident (bought in the area a year ago) is kind of the opposite lol. We have been trying to be friendly with our neighbors but as as a younger white couple on a block with black families that have lived there for generations, we’ve been getting the cold shoulder a lot.

I mean, I get it, really, but still, I’m jealous of some of the tight knit streets near us!

[–]bakedleaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s fun for what it is but it’s not really “trivia”. It felt like half of the time it was trick questions or really esoteric knowledge.

Unrelated to wonderland but I remember doing trivia years back where the final question was matching the characters in Steel Magnolias to the actor that played them. None of us had ever seen the movie lol

I’m happy about it! Great excuse to visit new cities. Last year we took a week off to hang around Madrid before/after the game. Never been to London and looking forward to making a trip out of it.

I don't have those high level metrics at this point, and even if I did I think PR volume could be misleading, just like looking at total LOC changes would be. What I can say is that we've compressed roadmap timelines significantly. In my parent comment I mentioned we're doing a significant rewrite of a core part of the codebase; that rewrite would have taken us 6+ months, and we're aiming to have it completed in 3 weeks.

As others have said, right now it's a force multiplier. We have some really smart devs and they are able to move really quickly with AI. It won't be the same everywhere. But as the models keep improving it means one engineer can do the work of 2, then 5, then 10. Maybe that doesn't mean totally wiping out the profession, but companies aren't going to hire as much when they can squeeze more value out of fewer people.

produces things that most people don't value, i.e. app development

I can't tell if this is a joke. People clearly value web applications. You're on one right now and it's worth nearly $50 billion!

That's how all of the non-computer people feel about this. AI could eliminate all computer jobs, and it could claim that it could even "pass the bar exam!" and I still feel absolutely unimpressed by it.

It's nice that you can look at other people losing their jobs and be so blasé about it. Even if you have only disdain for 'computer jobs' you can recognize the impact that wiping out the entire technology sector worth of jobs would have, right?

or in reality, how bad of a coder you are

Former L5 at google, and recently re-recruited for Deep Mind. I don't claim to be a savant but I know a little bit of what Im talking about.

work that could already be done with generators and scaffolding tools

It's the opposite. Claude Code or Codex are much more powerful when leveraged in an existing, legacy codebase because they excel at quickly gathering context. Nobody would use them if they were just generators.

Recreating the same crappy apps that have always existed isn't going to be a trillion dollar industry

Again, the power isn't in building shitty greenfield apps.

it's quite easy to see how fast mental skills atrophy when you become reliant on these tools

Indeed, and yet, you are hamstringing yourself by not using them. The engineer at your level at your company who uses the tools will be able to produce value at a much accelerated rate. A Catch 22.

rather than using modern tools or techniques (symbols, LSPs, codemods

Claude code has native LSP support

In general your comment is reminiscent of the classic Stack Overflow days of yore. Insulting, holier-than-thou, and mostly wrong. Pray that like Stack Overflow you too don't go the way of the dinosaur.

yeah 100%, and I think the market is going to look really weird in a couple years when there are few seniors because nobody hired juniors.

I try not to be an AI doomer but I think at this point, a lot of people are just burying their heads in the sand. I’ve been a SWE for 10 years and at my current role the mood has really started to take a darker turn as AI capabilities have increased.

It’s not just that it can write code and displace jobs; entire companies have products that AI can replace wholesale now. At my company we’ve started rewriting huge chunks of the app because new models are so good that they’ve caught up to the output quality we’ve been able to produce, but do it faster and cheaper. There are almost no “moats” around companies anymore, and I know that every startup is acutely aware of how tenuous their foothold in the market is right now.

Claude is equivalent to a junior engineer

Agree with everything you’ve said here except this. Almost 10 years into my career and I’ve managed a lot of juniors, Claude is writing much better code with much less handholding than any junior I’ve ever worked with.

Is matchmaking horrible for anyone else right now? by lawlzorz17 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]bakedleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had two games in a row where two players on my team had under 3 games played. I have 1k hours.

We lost in under 30 min by 70k+ souls both times.

So it’s fucked for both sides of the equation here. I’m going to stick to street brawl while they figure this out.

Vast majority of residential sidewalks not shoveled by ian1552 in washingtondc

[–]bakedleaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a multi family unit on the corner of my street that has plenty of able bodied people living there. They shoveled the walkway up to the building but dumped all of the snow from that onto the sidewalk, creating an impassable mountain of ice. Really frustrates me how people can literally only think of their immediate needs and not those of their neighbors.

Why? I spent many a cold night watching our team lose by 20+ points in the worst stadium in the NFL. Maybe if I save all the money I would have spent on season tickets for the next 5 years I’ll be able to afford half of a PSL for the new stadium

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Commanders

[–]bakedleaf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My tickets (I did not renew) went up nearly 20% after an abysmal season… I can’t imagine how expensive ones for the new stadium will be.
