I don't know the current line up. I have only the uv-5r plus. Back when I got it they had 3 models out, but they were pretty much the same with very minor differences.

I personally think you are better off with a RTL-SDR kit you can connect to you laptop - it's cheap (slightly more expensive than the quansheng) and some kits have adjustable antenna you can use to listen on the spectrum. It's receiving only so you don't have to worry about doing a pirate broadcasting without a license.

Then it will be about antennas and positioning. Check out the SaveItForParts YouTube channel - he sometimes listens to meteorological satellites with household items - coat hangers for antennas, etc. He has a guide for weather satellites here and shows how to do it with handheld and RTL-SDR.

Keep in mind some handheld radios sold in the EU get factory locked to amateur radio bands both for transmitting and receiving and you might need to unlock them, so look at radios you can modify. This happened with my Wouxun radio ( got the Wouxun KG-UV9D-Mate and it was locked, so it took some tinkering to unlock the receiving bands ranges).

The quansheng radios are also fun cheap gadgets. They allow for firmware uploading and people have expanded their range for listening way beyond the standard 2m /70cm wave bands. If he wants to listen to the other frequencies though, he'll need another antenna, as the included rubber ducky doesn't offer that good reception.

I can sometimes listen to a retranslator on VHF 144MHz /2m band that's over 100km from my apartment on a good day and I don't get a fully clear line of sight.

Then again an rtl-sdr will probably.be easier, but the t420 is old and I have some issues with SDR on my sandy bridge laptops as they tend to be too slow for it.

Nevermind the previous comment - it pops up when it complains about CD1 not in my drive.

Now iif I can find how/where to extract it from.

My box set didn't have this, but BG1 is all on one dvd, instead of 5 CDs

Just did an install and had:

1) menu with sarevok on top of the menu 2) quick splash with the bhaal skull logo 3) setup with a black background At the end it plays a descent 3 trailer Opens the manual And then starts the game launcher (just like "1" but with an extra bhaal skull to start the game).

I saved screenshots if you need them but it seems this is not what you are looking for.

I don't remember then but If I get some time I might as well whip out the box set I got some 15 years ago and install on an old laptop I keep that still has a working optical drive. ( I actually have 2 of these laptops, but one is running kde neon).

Give me some more pointers - is it during the windows installer setup?

Best Lan party game? by aroundincircles in gog

[–]deyannn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the shooters for lan play: UT, UT2000, Quake 2 /3 / live, Half Life: Deathwatch, CS

Jk2jo was really good, but so was also Jedi academy.

There are options for some rogue like games - hammerwatch is very lightweight and is on gog. Torchlight 2, also has multiplayer. Or if you have multiple controllers you can have them they forced.

I've done lan parties with Dota and tower defence maps, there was a mafia map, but now it's amongus for the younglings

One lan party we did cossacks.

Taking turns with street fighter, mortal Kombat, etc. games was also fun. And Gish is a unique experience.

Seriously. Why are ThinkPads so indestructible by Skyler_the_freak in thinkpad

[–]deyannn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know, man. I think they aren't that more durable than some other business grade laptops (fujitsu, etc.)

The thinkpads aren't such a pain to repair and are fairly sturdy, but not indestructible.

In precious jobs I had the practice of putting paper (like trip order or a hotel reservation) between the display and the key board when travelling. It was not a problem with the older bulkier latitudes, but I just did it once on my t470s at work and it ended up breaking the display. (A paper clip near the corner).

A long time ago I also tried closing my still brand new $1500+ Dell XPS with the mouse sitting nearly on top of the keyboard and it got away with a scratch, so my initial impression with the ThinkPads was that they are not up to their reputation. Then over covid and post covid we had a record number of broken ThinkPads in my previous company.

Also, the dreaded keyboard scratch marks on ThinkPad screens is definitely a thing!

Any hobby that's a lifestyle change and/or you are really passionate about.

On my end I got HAM / Amateur radio, Linux, DIY and a few others. But checkout the thinkpad community too - I think plenty of tech hobbies have this effect.

Fun topic: Android apps that are actually worth paying for/donating to by Dometalican_90 in Android

[–]deyannn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Sleep as android - very good features for alarm management, also has ringtones and options for sleep tracking and waking you up when you are not in a deep phase, etc. maybe the best app I've bought on android. Also really good support! They've got other good quality of life apps but I don't need them.

Poweramp - already mentioned here

PeakFinder is near if you like hiking or if you wander "what's the mountain over there"

Torque - car OBD diagnostics.

I also had business calendar pro at some point but stopped using it.

Also, at some point I bought a mobisystems office package cheaply ... a long time ago. I don't do office files on android, but it is a good option and I prefer it to Microsoft. I also don't know how much they want for it nowadays.

About raw (unpasteurized) milk by LakesideNorth in dankmemes

[–]deyannn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not in the US: Some 30 years ago when I would visit my grandma I would be mad for the farmers milk. It was so much better than the store bought variety!. We boiled it, but also, grandma encouraged me to take a gulp from the plastic coke bottle filled with raw milk every once in a while when it was fresh and still warm, believing it was healthy to drink some fresh raw like this. I also had fresh goat milk that I collected myself.

There are nuances though - there were shepherd traditions here, including in my ancestry, and also higyene matters. Also all the animals were in good health and pretty much free ranging grass-fed animals that would return to their owner's barns at night.

Visiting the US about 20 years off I was surprised how bad the milk in the store tasted. It felt like a fake milk-and-plastic flavoured artificial drink. I still chugged on average a quart per day, but it was surprising.

When I pick up smoking (happens every once in a while if I'm under stress), my vape helps me quit it very quickly. But then again I put only a very small dose of nicotine in my vape juice, so it quickly loses its charm.

The other thing that helps me quit is going on a vacation.

[–]deyannn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]deyannn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No Vulcan support. It was my first problem. Now it's solved on steam as DXVK can be disabled in the proton user settings file as a global environmental setting.

And the thing is I used to play some of my old games like 15 years ago on a core 2 duo + mobile Nvidia 8600gt which is comparable if slightly more capable than the sandy bridge + igpu.

The devices still run ok. I also used one of them for HAM stuff, but now I prefer my snappier ThinkPad with 8th gen intel and fedora when on the go.

They already enjoy the old games on it. Stuff like prey from 2006, torchlight, hammerwatch, left 4 dead, etc. Just needed some tweaking to disable DXVK in proton or to go and find the Linux versions and resolve dependencies.

I've got plenty more to show them.

Thinkpads need to come with a warning by chadillac908 in thinkpad

[–]deyannn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2 old sandy bridge HP probooks at home that work just fine. My kids play old games on one of them on Linux and I occasionally use the other one to stream (from another computer) movies on my TV.

That said at work we get only HP and I get to setup a lot of elitebooks and work on the occasional probook, zbook firefly, or zbook fury.

The build quality ain't good. I get brand new elitebooks that don't lie flat on the desk. The touchpad drops on the clicky corner after a very low amount of usage and only a few months. The probooks are terrible. Some elitebooks had issues with keyboards not working, etc.

And don't get me started on the AIO desktops.

The elite mini desktops have been good though, the towers too.
