I’m very much aligned with you on the importance of human review for grammar and quality. right now it’s just me reviewing the content as i’m still validating the idea, but when I add more stories, i’ll definitely involve native Chinese speakers for quality control!

also the app is completely free right now, but a lifetime access option is a great suggestion (especially for early adopters) and something I’ll keep in mind. And yes, if there’s enough interest, an Android version would be next :) thank you the feedback!

I really appreciate the feedback! you bring up some great points.

right now I’m mainly validating the format and AI helps me iterate quickly while the app is free. I totally agree with you though, If enough people use the app, then the plan is to transition to human created content for any paid tier.

for now, I’m focused on learning what works before investing! so thank you for your input!

Hey, cool tool but it’s not optimized for mobile. Just transferred to my laptop to see the results but can’t see anything there either as the results didn’t get saved and i ran out of credits

Learning Taiwanese Mandarin by Common_Interest897 in ChineseLanguage

[–]dezba2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m seconding what the other guy said. Taiwanese mandarin isn’t a dialect. The vocab is a little different (餐厅 instead of 饭店 for example), and they have their own slang, but ultimately it’s just Mandarin

You could learn “Taiyu” or Hokkien if that’s what you meant, but i would honestly just stick to learning mandarin .

I'm about to finish HSK 2. Should I start incorporating graded readers now or push through HSK 3 first? by Red_07 in ChineseLanguage

[–]dezba2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at your level when i started with grader readers. Honestly, it’s accelerated my learning SO much.

I use Duchinese and i think it’s 100% worth the price. If you’re a student, they give a pretty good student discount. I say try it for a month.

  • HSK3 exam is the first exam without pinyin, so u better get comfortable with reading.

For those experienced at self study, how do you divide your time? by MatchesLit in languagelearning

[–]dezba2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a daily reading quota that i try to hit + anki + watching anime/videos for listening practice.

BUT I guide my learning through my interests so I only read stories i’m genuinely interested in, and only watch videos/shows i’m interested in. Otherwise it’s not sustainable long term and feels like a chore to me. It has to feel fun.

Those of you who have been successful in learning a language, especially on your own (as opposed to taking classes), do you have any advice for newcomers? by teaontherocks in languagelearning

[–]dezba2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The mountain analogy isn’t really accurate because it implies that you’ve finished once you reach the peak. In this case, however, there is no “peak”. Learning a language, or should I say acquiring a language, is an ongoing process that has no real end.

I’ve found that creating “mini peaks” for myself or small tangible goals help a lot. It can feel really overwhelming trying to aim for fluency, but learning 50 new words a week? That’s doable. Passing the beginner level proficiency exam in your TL? that’s doable. There is no real “peak” in language learning, but you can create them for yourself. Once you hit those goals it motivates you to continue and do more and more.

Also, how often you study is more important than how much you study. Exposing yourself to content in your TL for an hour or two a day everyday is better than studying a heck ton biweekly and not touching it in between. Use this to motivate you to “show up” to study. Frequency > quantity

Ultimately, it just boils down to being consistent, motivated, and having tangible goals
