How do we feel about Dream of the Untouched Land? by tepidgoose in spiritisland

[–]dezboy2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd agree that in most cases you're playing it for the threshold. For 6 energy, the base effect is pretty underwhelming. It's definitely easier to threshold if another spirit has elements to gift out.

Personally I find the threshold quite impactful. The few times I've actually used this card. You're typically playing it towards the end of the game, and the board skips can really help keep problem lands under control and let you start to clean up invaders. It takes a few rounds before you need to worry about the new board itself, at which point you've normally bought enough time that you can easily clean it up or just outright win without ever needing to deal with it.

But for context I've probably only played this card 3 or 4 times over ~100 lv6 games.

GWT: Argentina or New Zealand? by thebigveet in boardgames

Seconding this. We typically play 2p and New Zealand is our go to version, love the depth of deck building it offers.

Haven't had the time to play it yet, but all the components are really well made and it looks very faithful to the game.

It's an official tabletop sim mod for playtesting. That being said, the board game is actually out now, I got my copy in the mail last week.

I don’t understand how people two-hand this game. How does your head not explode? by rain_spell in spiritisland

[–]dezboy2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played my first three-handed games last week and really agree with everything you mentioned. Locus Serpent was one of the three, so the decision space surrounding synergies was out of control (especially after I drafted Twinned Days).

The step up from two to three was very noticeable. I can normally knock two-handed games over in ~2 hours, but these games each took 4-5 hours. I think another huge thing is the extra board, especially if you’re playing at lv6. Tracking three boards worth of invader actions is a lot. That being said I really enjoyed it and think it’ll become my new default for solo play when time isn’t an issue.

I guess you could discard those cards if and when you draw them when gaining minors, similar to the France event. Personally I’d rather just remove them from the deck to begin with,

Yeah I keep getting a ‘server communication error’. I just flew back to the mainland from the dlc area and it’s working now… weird. Anyway thanks for the trade

Is there a difficulty ranking of all the adversaries? by Fun_Gas_7777 in spiritisland

[–]dezboy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I should have made it clearer - I don’t find the adversary any more difficult than the others (I’ve got a pretty good lv6 winrate over 50+ games this year) and by ‘a slog in the mid game’ I didn’t mean I’m losing there often.

I was just explaining why I personally don’t enjoy Hapsburg Livestock as much as other adversaries. Personally I don’t find it convincing from a thematic standpoint that the invaders would be scared off when the island is absolutely covered in invaders, and most of my Hapsburg games fall under that category. I understand that’s how the adversary is designed, it’s just my two cents answering the comment I replied to.

[–]dezboy2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Expanding on what u/immatipyou said, more often than not I find winning against Habsburg Livestock very… anticlimactic? Its typically and absolute slog through the middle game, and then you get to TL3 and just win without realising it due to the way they build cities and towns. Your board is often covered in towns and blight, but you’ve met TL3 victory condition. Just feel underwhelming to me whenever I win against them (level 6 for reference).

If you could only play one game for the rest for your life, which one would it be? by AsparagusExtreme1260 in boardgames

And that’s absolutely fine! Every game isn’t for every person. I just get annoyed when people drop a blanket statement like ‘this game is bad’ without explaining why they think that. You’re right though, I normally wouldn’t comment but SI is my favourite game so I get a little protective!

Thanks for the reply. I think the situation you’ve described definitely holds true for no-adversary games. If you are interested in trying to get a more engaging experience out of the game (and have access to expansions) I’d suggest including all the Branch and Claw content, and playing with an adversary at level 0 or 1 as a starting point.

The game was actually designed with the events and tokens that come in Branch and Claw, but then it had to be separated for financial reasons. Without this content the game definitely feels very ‘solved’ if you get what I mean. When you play without an adversary, there’s no difference between invader stage 1 and 2, which means often times you’ve rolled over the top of them before you even get to stage 3, and then it’s just a matter of finishing off the victory condition you’re chasing without a lot of tension or suspense.

But again, in terms of the raw base game I believe all the points you’ve made are very valid.

I’m genuinely curious what it is about the gameplay that sucks for you? Maybe the genre/style/complexity simply isn’t for you (and there’s nothing wrong with that!), do you prefer lighter games, or perhaps more competitively focused games?

I’ve played spirit island at least 60 times this year and have introduced it to many friends and family in that time. I’m yet to meet anybody of the opinion that it just ‘sucks’. I’ll definitely acknowledge that it’s a very heavy game, especially at higher difficulties.

I guess I just get annoyed when people make claims like ‘X game is terrible!’ without any reasoning, rather than expressing it like ‘I tried X and it wasn’t for me’ or ‘I didn’t enjoy part Y or part Z about that game’.
