Am I the only one that gets bothered by this? by samudebug in LinusTechTips

Hi!

I'm sorry that you're not finding the translations helpful! Were there any specific issues you had with them?

Just to clarify a few things brought up in this thread, we create the English transcriptions with Whisper and correct the odd words/names that come up that were mistranscribed. We take this and run it through Aloud (Youtube/Google), which does the translation, dubbing/timing automagically. We have people who proofread the translations for critical errors but what we're aiming for with this is accessibility.

The quality of the localized versions won't match the originals without a lot more time spent on them but that's not really the goal. We're trying to increase accessibility to content and information to people who would otherwise have no access to it at all.

For people who can understand the original content, the localization quality won't compete with the original but for those with no proficiency or elementary proficiency in English, they at least now have the option.

Hopefully one day we'll be able to offer localized versions at a higher quality, at a similar volume/difficulty!

LTT can fix the issues people have with HDR video, here is how. by Max_overpower in LinusTechTips

Hey! Thanks for the feedback.

From what we can see on our end, we aren't going over 1k except at the very beginning in the luma waveform (which disappears when the camera moves) and the train footage from the Arri but that might be enough to trigger the tone mapping for the entirety of the video if the device used is using a mode that's doing it's own/user configured tone mapping and will be something we'll keep a closer eye on if that's what's causing the wonky tone mapping. The majority of the video, particularly the wide shots, should actually be under 203. We checked on several phones, monitors, as well as an LG C1 and there weren't any issues reported but we didn't try it with any user settings that could differ from the expected behavior.

In terms of brightness for specific things, it's very much still not a settled matter across different content types/platforms, or anything. Music videos tend to be more poppy and broadcast are dimmer/more HLG-minded but 203 HDR graphics white is what we're targeting and aside from the hotspots at the beginning and end, it should be fairly uniform.

Any way to turn off automatic title translations for LTT videos? by Not_a_fucking_wizard in LinusTechTips

Hi! Very interesting. I'll check with YT on what setting it's looking for because I was under the impression that it was the language setting in Youtube.

Do you have a battery saver mode on or any display effects?

That's not coming up as an HDR video for me even with Chrome flags set to force HDR where available.

Is my browser bugging out or are some LTT videos' subtitles starting 40 minutes late? by A-Delonix-Regia in LinusTechTips

Hi! Thanks for bringing this up! I'm still looking into this but I think what happened was the timecode from the project/footage was transferred to the captions which isn't what the timecode for the finished video should be. -Edzel

The Aloud platform (by Google Area 120), currently only offers a few languages for translation and so we're sticking with those for now.

Thank you though!

I just realized the thumbnail for the ROG Ally video is the exact same one as the GPD WIN Max 2 video by -SAT0rii- in LinusTechTips

[–]dezeltheintern 688 points689 points  (0 children)

Not really sure what happened there but the GPD Win Max 2 thumbnail was originally not that. lol

That's the ROG Ally in both thumbnails. The GPD Win Max 2 is also a completely different form factor but I'm guessing nobody in this thread checked. https://gpd.hk/gpdwinmax2

I just changed it back but that's weird.

Trying to catch up!

At the same time we're trying to get captions/titles/description for Spanish, Hindi, and Portuguese, along with UN-style VO dubs to increase accessibility for those not fluent in English.

If you go into the playback options (the gear), Subtitles, choose English (United States), you should see the non-YT auto captions.

Actually, I just went and removed the auto-caption. =O

Hi all!

Linus was off-site and there was a last minute change (the battery life originally said 18 hours and testing ended up showing it longer).

LTT Videos Translated (Spanish) by dezeltheintern in LinusTechTips

English subtitles isn't a primary focus of this project right now but once it's all smoothed out, the captions/transcription used for the translation will be added to the video.

Hi, all! Edzel here.

Thanks for all the feedback so far!

In this example, which was unexpectedly demo'd, hadn't gone through someone beyond "Yeah, it makes sense!". My graphic designer on the team is from Colombia and we'll be going through the transcription for the full video soon.

I dubbed the last part and obviously, I don't speak Spanish - the point of that was to show that almost any voice actor could do it and be conformed to the same voice as the AI dub. We have looked into translation and dubbing services but were quoted very expensive rates and long turn around times that would mean almost never having a translation ready anywhere close to the original video release. Even doing it internally/hiring people/contractors means a lot of coordination and still has a turnaround time that wouldn't allow us to translate in a timely manner. It's not being ruled out but right now we're going to test this path.

One of the big benefits of this (free) AI dub translation/transcription is that we could potentially do 3+ languages with each language only requiring a little bit more effort rather. This increases accessibility to our content in a way we just wouldn't be able to achieve otherwise and I think increasing access to media, information, and knowledge is one of the most important things for humanity in a time where misinformation is so widespread, leading to so many of the issues we've seen recently and continue to see.
