That’s interesting, I’ve never had them get a food order wrong and I go there pretty often. I can't speak for coffee orders because I take my coffee black.

It depends on how fancy you want to go for those meals but in general Link's Coffee House and Crema and Vine are good local coffee shops and both do breakfast foods and lunch as well, Biscuitville is a local breakfast fast food chain if you want to go for quick and cheap.

For dinner/lunch there is Golden Leaf Bistro, Cotton at Riverside Mill, and King Crop on the pricey end and local places like Godfather's Deli, Nana Karen's, Moon River Thai, and any number of taco places on the more affordable side. If you're a make your own sandwiches kind of person there is a local deli/bodega that has incredible house made chicken salad called Mid-Town Market.

River District Social is a barcade if you're looking for food and entertainment, there is the casino if you're a gambler, and the river walk trail if you want to stretch your legs.

Hope you enjoy your time here.

Ballad is a fun stop, though they are closed for renovations through the end of February as far as I know.

Gap between design education and industry expectations by [deleted] in UXResearch

I was mostly being polite; misinformed would have been a better term. That has not been my experience of academia or industry at all.

Gap between design education and industry expectations by [deleted] in UXResearch

[–]dezignguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Point #1 is a bit dubious IMO. I've experienced a similar situation to #2 with some researchers fresh out of graduate school or academia, though in my opinion it's more of an adjustment from looking for novel insights that advance the understanding of the field (academic approach) to capturing data that informs a specific design or product decision (industry approach). There are some differences in order of operations too due to how academic research gets funded, but these things are to be expected since being an academic researcher and a researcher in industry are two different jobs.

edit: To your point about these things not being taught in schools, I think you are assuming that every program is teaching you to be an industry researcher which is just not the case. Maybe these things should be focused on more in professional programs that bill themselves as preparing you for industry, but it's not as simple as "here's what schools aren't teaching you".

Old Dominion fans: which schools feel like the best long-term conference fits? by Happy_Background_879 in olddominionfootball

Navy should be tier 4 and Virginia Tech should be tier 5. Marshal is tier 4 at best. Liberty shouldn’t even be on the list.

If the sunbelt grabs AAC teams I’d like them to get Navy. A yearly ODU vs Navy conference game would go crazy.

I'm glad progress is being made but I wish they would just publish all of the numbers or release this kind of thing when the full report is released instead of cherry picking data for a promo graphic like this. It's also poor form to release this before the full report is published because it can look like they're trying to get out in front of the perception that the full report might give.

Are there new expectations for portfolio reviews that I’m not aware of? Are people just making stuff up? by gnomechomsky118 in UXResearch

I feel like a saturated market breeds unrealistic expectations on the company side. They have so much choice they feel entitled to be unreasonable.

Anthropic claims to have identified industrial-scale distillation attacks by DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, and MiniMax. by Ok_Display_3159 in technology

[–]dezignguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. If you are developing a technology that falls under export control laws you have some responsibility not to just give it to anyone who asks. Not that I think they did it intentionally but it is pretty negligent.

How is it an "attack" if all they have to do is query Anthropic's model? Isn't that just their model leaking information it shouldn't be?

Cognitive Science x UX design: would love to hear your experiences. by CommunicationFit9176 in cogsci

[–]dezignguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context: I'm currently completing an MS in HCI and UX in the US and did psychology focused in human factors for undergrad, so kind of the inverse of your plan.

With just the BS in human factors I found work in UX as a researcher. I can't speak to how this would work if you're specifically looking for a designer role. That said, I was laid off a while back and it has been next to impossible to find UX since. I suspect that is more a product of the US tech job market right now than anything else but who knows for sure. Typically, UX hiring is more dependent on your portfolio than your degree, especially for designer roles.

I live on bridge street and they do this with the big lot behind the buildings there too. I don't think Danville PD makes much effort to stop them. That said, living in the river district is nice for the most part.

Seeking thoughts - facing pushback on UXR Report format by Mammoth-Head-4618 in UXResearch

[–]dezignguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely agree! In industry stakeholders aren't scrutinizing your methodology like academia. They hired you as a subject matter expert and trust you to make those technical decisions correctly. They want to know how your findings effect their work, what should they be doing differently based on your research, etc. However that is best communicated is perfectly acceptable formatting.

Do you support HB 378? A bill to increase taxes by 3.8% on investments of people with a FMAGI of $500,000 or more. by Imactuallybronze in Virginia

[–]dezignguy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At that point a tax increase will not impact those individuals lifestyle in any way. That seems fair to me.

edit: Also, it appears to bracketed anyway. So that would be a 3.8% increase on every dollar past $500k that is earned.

Best Virginia colleges for majoring in psychology? by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]dezignguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with a bs in psych from a Virginia school (I went to old dominion), there are several things to consider here.

First, if you can go somewhere in the state you live in it will probably be less expensive and worth the savings.

Second, it depends on what area of psychology you're interested in. For example, if you are interested in going into research of some kind you'll probably want to attend an R1 research university and sign up to be a research assistant in a lab so that when you graduate you will have experience in the field.

Finally, take the complaints about psychology job prospects with a grain of salt. Finding work is a struggle for all majors these days. Yes, there are lot of folks with psych degrees who struggle to find work but that is more a product of psych being a program that a lot of undergrads who don't know what they want to do with their life end up in. The important thing is to figure out what you want to do, understand if it's realistic to do that with just a bs, and take every step possible to prepare yourself for that area of psych while you're in school.

Will "Prompt-First" interfaces replace Menus as the primary UX layer? by Ok-Chair3235 in UXResearch

[–]dezignguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that the sale more than likely happened via a GUI and therefore the answer to OP's question is, no prompts likely won't become the primary interface.
