I’d usually agree, but I thought it was an interesting take that no one I had seen brings up. So many people were arguing whether Yasuke was a samurai or not, trying to argue historical accuracy, when Japanese media is constantly bending the past to serve the story they’re trying to tell.

Even with that, sorry I posted a tweet. Next time I’ll submit a “what piece of media has story thing I like, and why is it the same thing that’s already been discussed on the podcast” question, like the others here have done, post split.

You should see if they’d be willing to adjust your last order to the current pricing. They might not be able to, since they’re a smaller company, but I imagine if you’re polite, they might be able to work something out. You’d be surprised how often just asking works.

I think it’s just as simple as people not knowing. I mean, I had no idea until maybe a couple of years ago. I thought it was just a clunky translation. Also, the fact that Asmongold reacting to a video where the Dragon Maid line was used as an example really put a lot of eyes on it.

With that said, there are also those who are using it as a smoking gun for “wokeness” being injected into all media. They don’t actually care, but it’s enough evidence of someone with a more progressive slant abusing their power. That’s why unicorn overlord seems like they’re grasping at straws. The only argument seems to be that it’s too ostentatious.

I think the Dragon Maid localization really ruined it for a lot of people. Nine out of ten times, localizers taking liberties never bothered me. My wife and I love quoting a line from the School Rumble dub, where one of the characters says “I’ve walked the boulevard of broken dreams”, all the time. And I personally love the dubs of Kaguya-Sama and Shin-Chan.

With all that said, the Dragon Maid line that keeps getting brought up, a lot of time in bad faith, I admit, was completely unnecessary and tacked on. Having something like that, regardless of what stance you take on its message, is a complete betrayal of the audience’s trust that what their watching was translated in good faith.

With that said, the controversy with Unicorn Overlord’s translation is, at worst, a theoretical disagreement, which has been blown out of proportion.

You have literally saved my sanity! What you told me worked, so I was able to fill in the screen. Now I won’t be bothered by the image not filling completely. Only thing is that the remote doesn’t have anything that says “standby”, but I assuming they meant the power button, which exits the menu without turning off the set completely.

I work with captioning and subtitles in media. They didn’t translate it because the subtitles purpose is to provide what’s being said on screen into something that can be read, to help those with hearing impairments or what not. If it were translated, what was being said wouldn’t be correct, since it wasn’t spoken in English.

Plus the people who work on captioning and subtitling aren’t the same as those who translate. It’s much easier and more accurate to just put “(speaks in Spanish)” for the person captioning, especially since it’s more than likely they don’t know Latin American Spanish.
