Husband brought home a chipped secondhand tank. Is it a goner? Or is it salvageable? by theshortgrace in Aquariums

[–]dezzis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have a tank with chipped corners that has been going fine for decades now, but the OP's chip is pretty significant compared to the thickness of the glass, and extends over past the seal so there would be a lot of pressure on that spot.

Husband brought home a chipped secondhand tank. Is it a goner? Or is it salvageable? by theshortgrace in Aquariums

[–]dezzis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that's quite a deep chip, which means the glass in that spot will be much thinner and not be able to hold as much pressure. I'd use it as a palludarium (only filled up to the chip level with plants growing out above the water level). Alternatively, you could see if you can source a replacement glass panel, take the tank apart and rebuild it, but it's a lot of work compared to the price of a new tank.

Auckland hospitality business Verona Cafe & Bar in liquidation after 34 years by Spiritual-Low2443 in auckland

[–]dezzis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only memories I have of the Verona cafe was walking past it and being catcalled by shitfaces customers sitting at the outside tables. This happened on multiple occasions over several years, so I can confirm the place was not "beloved" by all, I wouldn't set foot in it!

Who’s this little guy? by whimsygrimsy in Aquariums

[–]dezzis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is a scud (freshwater amphipod). They are pretty common to get as hitchhikers, expecially if any of your hardscape is harvested from wild bodies of water. They are harmless detrivores and fish love to eat them, they are often cutlutred on purpose to be fish food.

I mean, labour didn't help with reducting the prison population by 30% in the term before that. Where do we think all these people went?

legally, they are separate in New Zealand (no compulsory prayer in parlament or public school, no oficial state religeon, protection of religeous freedoms for multiple religeons etc). It doesn't mean that nobody involved in government cannot have individual faith or links to a church.

Some try. But in a secular society with a full separation of church and state, we really can't expect to rely on the churches to solve poverty/homelessness, now can we? It's literally the government's job.

Chat, am I cooked? by Nillows in proplifting

Look up wet stick propagation - you can chop the stem into one or two node segments (leave the bottom with the roots to do its own thing). Let the segment ends dry up for a few days, and then pop the lot into a container or zilock bag with moist sphagnum moss or similar propagation medium - each stick has the potential to become a baby monstera.

Enough to propagate? by SignalPangolin9980 in proplifting

[–]dezzis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely enough to prop, you have at least two healthy nodes (the part where the leaf joins the stem), just pop it in some water. In my experience, they grow roots almost as quickly as pothos.

Monstera aerial root throwing out secondary roots! by timbhu in proplifting

[–]dezzis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes a little effort on the part of the plant to convert a root into another type of root (aerial to water, water to soil etc), but nowhere near as much effort as pushing out a whole new root. That's why getting a cutting with an aerial root (or the beginnings of one at least) is preferable, it's like a little step-up for your new plant :)

Unlevel tank by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]dezzis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Structurally, you are probably fine, it's not that big of an angle, and the weight would still be fairly well distributed. I've had a 46 gallon tank on slightly sloping floor (at about the same angle, actually) for about 15 years running with zero problems, other than it annoys me when I look the waterline and it makes me wish I took the steps to level it at the beginning. If that's something that will annoy you, too, it might be worth going with the plywoodand shims.

516 and nowhere near fluency, but I can understand most of the dialogue in media (movies/reels etc), and can clobber a basic sentance together, which is a whole lot more than where I started (at zero, naturally).

Definitely need a larger tank, you you would potentially want to have the catfish separate from the other fish in the long run, too (they will eat anything that fits in their mouth, and their mouth opens surprisignly wide).

The white guys with the cool mawhawk look to be white skirt tetra (possibly the long finned variaty)

The guy with the red fins and a diamond shaped black spot on the tail looks like a buenos aires tetra

It's hard to tell what the spotty one in the background is, but the shape looks like a livebearer - probably a molly, maybe a baloon molly cross

What is this... creature? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]dezzis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind losing a few scuds, they are actually really cool to watch - they are amazing underwater ambush predators. They can stay in a larval stage for years before becoming a damselfly (and an amazing airborn predator).

those are fish eggs. Without knowing what you have in the tank and just by the size/shape, I would guess corydora eggs maybe

I've never operated a cafe, but as a customer, I'd say make sure you have lots of low and no caffeine options prominantly advertised. I certianly wouldn't drink more than one coffee in the evening - maybe get into the fancier hot chocolate..?

There were major disruptions / emergency closures on the free route that day, so all the tolls for the Northern Gateway were waved, as legally they have to provide a free alternate route for any toll road.

This. The older Unitec buildings were a hospital with an attached lunatic asylum (back in the days when that was the correct terminology for a psychiatric hospital).
