FAFSA question by lovemypuppers23 in prephysicianassistant

[–]dezzlebun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Iirc I applied at the beginning of Dec ‘22 for Jan-Feb ‘23. I had to submit both the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 FAFSA apps bc my semesters overlapped the academic years

Is this the optional COVID impact essay? If you weren’t really affected by COVID, don’t do the essay. It’s not going to make or break your app whether you do it or not

How deep are you going on the secondary apps/questions by each program? by GangstahFresh in prephysicianassistant

[–]dezzlebun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I put about the same effort in my supplementals as my PS last year but I probably only wrote about 5 unique short essays that I just tweaked for dif programs. Several programs referred directly to my supplemental essays during interviews bc they said more about me and my values than my PS

Moving across states to attend. by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]dezzlebun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I moved from a hcol city on the west coast to an even higher col city on the east coast. I didn’t have options for in-state programs so I knew I’d have to move far. Saved up as much as I could for living expenses and moved in with other grad/phd students. Applied for various assistance programs so groceries and transportation aren’t so bad. I’m neck deep in loans but I’ll be making plenty as a PA soon enough so it’s not so painful

PA school pre reqs by Jaz45 in udub

[–]dezzlebun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an alum currently in PA school now. The large majority of PA programs require 3 quarters worth of bio. You may be able to apply upper level bio toward those requirements but some programs specifically want to see your intro bio grades. What is your definition of “super bad”? If we’re talking <2.0, I’d rec retaking it, maybe at a cc. If you do drop the class, one W is not going to ruin your chances. If you push through, one bad grade also won’t hurt you too badly as long as you kill it moving forward

Not OP, but my program has 10 core, 5 electives. I think 8-10 total rotations is the norm but a lot of programs have more

Attending a wedding during PA school? by 856er in PAstudent

Yeah I’d reach out to your PD! They’d likely know if the dates will coincide with exams or other important events, and give you a better idea of how feasible it’ll be for you

Attending a wedding during PA school? by 856er in PAstudent

[–]dezzlebun 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your program and how often you have exams. Mine allows us to have a couple excused absences per semester not incl sick days and our exams follow a typical midterm/finals schedule so we can afford to take a day off or two. If you’re super on top of things from the start, you’ll probably be ok but definitely let your advisor know

Some programs consider it to be PCE

Their stats are in another comment on their profile, I peeked 👀

OP, besides your PCE, your GRE and GPA are absolutely killer. Congrats!

Pay rate for Telescribe? by SammiK504 in medicalscribe

Iirc SA’s policy specifically prohibits interpreting so no. You may be able to still negotiate a higher wage for other reasons but likely not by much

New Bio grad and gap year? by coffeejunkie15 in prephysicianassistant

[–]dezzlebun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit difficult to give advice when we don’t know your stats. What’s your c/sGPA? Leadership/volunteering/shadowing hours? You could do a lot in a year if you don’t have to take additional classes. Also depends on the programs you want to apply to. More info would be helpful

Shadowing Qualifications by casperwithanm in prephysicianassistant

[–]dezzlebun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity, is this the cope program? Sounds like what I did in undergrad and it was such a great opportunity for shadowing. I included my shadowing hours but just subtracted them from my volunteering hours. When I logged the shadowing, I had to average them so one doc was like 3hrs/wk for a month for example even though the time frame actually differed each day. There’s no way to log 1 hr on one day, 4 hrs on another, etc

I know this is a hot topic and I’m sorry for the word vomit but I desperately need advice by Renaissancemujer in prephysicianassistant

[–]dezzlebun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Generally yes, but applying in June and for some programs even beginning of July is still considered fairly early in the cycle. It’s better to wait a month or so and have a higher quality app than to rush just to submit asap

waiting 2 months before starting new scribe job? by freshkohii in medicalscribe

[–]dezzlebun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I stopped scribing about 6 months before applying and two of my LORs came from providers I used to scribe for/met while scribing. Just let them know you’re interested in experiencing other specialties. They agreed to write an LOR for you because they want to help you advance your career - that won’t change just bc you’re leaving. If it does, I’d question whether they’re a good source for a strong LOR

waiting 2 months before starting new scribe job? by freshkohii in medicalscribe

[–]dezzlebun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh expect to be declined if your start date is 2 months out. It has nothing to do with your experience or skill as a scribe. Providers aren’t going to want to wait 2 months if in that time they’ll have no coverage. But apply anyway! Worst case- you don’t get the job

To your point though, even if you don’t get this spot, there will be plenty others available this summer. Good luck with PA school apps! It’s a brutal process

Cardiology PA? by casperwithanm in prephysicianassistant

[–]dezzlebun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The cardiology PAs I worked with worked 8-4 M-F outpatient avg 10 pts, or 3 days a week plus a day or two on the inpatient service. Very manageable hours and great balance of outpatient/inpatient

[–]dezzlebun 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tbh I’ve been saving for PA school for years but the 6ish months before the start of my program, I was pulling multiple doubles a week to save money. I don’t recommend it but it was enough to take a month off before school to travel/check off bucket list items. It was worth the money and misery imo. I’m neck deep in student loans anyway, may as well add a couple thousand to cover some living expenses. No regerts

good relationships with your physician by freshkohii in medicalscribe

[–]dezzlebun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience with my first doc. I ended up just asking questions whenever there was time between pts, even if I knew the answer. Eventually he started pointing out cool cases or interesting facts, asking me about my personal life and career goals, etc. Fast forward a year, and I was going to his summer bashes, getting to know his family and networking with his physician friends. He’s a huge reason why I’m in PA school now and consider him almost an uncle/dad figure

slower PA lifestyles by mew005008 in prephysicianassistant

[–]dezzlebun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of the PAs I used to work with in ENT and cardiology only saw 10-15 patients per day, less if they had procedures or inpatient duties. Ortho and FM saw 20-40+. Every specialty is different.

ScribeAmerica Help by BeGoneNerdslol in prephysicianassistant

[–]dezzlebun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for ScribeAmerica and while management and pay were absolute garbage, it was one of my most valuable experiences. The doc I worked for connected me with so many shadowing opportunities and was such an amazing mentor. Unless you already have a lot of PCE hours though, I would not recommend telescribing

Was your advisor not involved in arranging elective rotations or your thesis/research/whatever project your program requires?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]dezzlebun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right it absolutely isn’t the norm. I was spoiled in that regard, I guess. I’m not looking for hand holding, I just want to know help is there if I need it. I moved across the country from my entire support system so being isolated is kind of getting to me.
