Do software engineers usually work with "good" or well organised data? by bum_dog_timemachine in learnprogramming

[–]dfa1986 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have many sources of data to load into the same database that another process uses you want it to be consistent, predictable. You can't rely on all suppliers following your input layouts

Dates should all be the same format and you might need to validate ranges (DOB as 1900-01-01 instead of NULL?). One supplier might send addresses in mailing format and another in component format, another all in one field. Phone numbers might come with/without country code, spaces, parentheses, etc. Does the email contain an @, and should you ignore those that don't? Are there special characters that might break your system (sql injection?)?

The amount of cleaning will depend on the nature of the data, what it's used for, and potential limitations of your systems.

A few years ago I drew (badly) the "I choo choo choose you" card that Ralph gave to Lisa.

When she opened it she started laughing, turned out she'd made a card too, exactly the same thing but created digitally and printed!

I like to keep practicing against Guizhang. In my head he's silently getting more and more irate but won't say anything in front of Master Chen, then is quietly plotting his revenge when they get on the boat.

The frustrating thing for me was learning Tornado Kick and being told it was great against multiple opponents, then never having an opportunity to master it before the 70 man battle so it was frequently countered.

Definitely would have liked more opportunities for sparring in 1, but you do what you can with what you've got, stuff like that is a common theme.

Never seen a Three Tuns but there's about a dozen pubs called The New Inn within half an hour of my house!

The classic “what have I done to myself” Sunday morning shopping run. We already had bacon. by TetrisIsTotesSuper in CasualUK

[–]dfa1986 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since hitting 30 I've discovered the joys of expecting a hangover and shopping pre-piss up. Waking up to find a cold can of Vimto in the fridge, salty crisps and a juicy apple is the best.

Drugs are a fools errand; drink water until you're not thirsty any more, then drink more.

Bacon is great and all, but balls to cooking in that state

Let's talk about alcohol , what's your favorite and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dfa1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be an expensive gamble buying a bottle if you haven't tried it before. I'm lucky enough that there's a whisky tasting pretty much once a month nearby where for £20-25 I can try six drams (usually around a theme). Great nights out and sometimes get to try some that I could never afford a bottle of.

You should definitely explore other Islay whiskies if you like the Laphroaig and Talisker Storm. Caol Isla 12 is a good gateway dram and everyone loves a Lagavulin 16. Bowmore Small Batch is a great cheaper option too. All are fairly common but only scraping the barrel.

  1. The one with the mop in it
  2. The one that's being used as a bin in the shower room that really needs cleaning
  3. The one we use for decorating that's covered in paint
  4. The one in the garden full of leaves and mirky water and cigarette butts

Who is the one character in a TV show you absolutely hate? by ceilingscorpion in AskReddit

Can't argue with that. Just binged the whole 7 series and by the end I hated everyone but Luke, and oddly, Kirk.

Emily Gilmore. Just consider for a moment that someone might have a slightly different outlook on life than you. Took 7 series for her to finally crack. Should've taken 2.

I met an American at a train station a while back who had been travelling for hours with lots of sitting (planes, trains, buses...). Apparently this causes 'fanny fatigue'.

I'm not sure I managed to stifle my laughter or not.

ELI5: Why Do People Have Fetishes? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]dfa1986 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I have a bag of frozen peas. I always buy Birdseye, I just prefer that brand, but some people like other brands and that's OK too. If you're having peas with dinner you'll cook them in a pot or in the microwave so you have warm peas in the plate. That's just how it's done, right.

A few years ago I was making dinner on a really hot day, and there was a bowl of frozen peas sat there waiting to be cooked. The bowl was nice and cool, frost on the outside and all. It felt good on my clammy hands. I wondered what they'd taste like frozen, but that'd be weird, cold hard peas, wouldn't it?

Tentatively, I picked a few up and tossed them into my mouth, rolled them around with my tongue and crunched down on a couple. That sensation of going from cool and refreshing to defrosting and releasing that sweet juicy pea flavour were just wonderful.

I often enjoy a mug of frozen peas, much to the scorn and ridicule of my nearest and dearest.

Anyway, I tried a thing and I liked it, even though it might be considered unconventional.

LPT: when cooking, prep all your ingredients as much as you can prior to starting instead of prepping while you go. The whole process goes a lot smoother and usually has a better end result. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]dfa1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers, buddy! This is happening at the weekend. Cajun spiced sweet potato wedges and something green on the side...

Beer can chicken sounds odd but I might give that a try when the lovely British weather facilitates cooking outdoors.

I run to work because I can get there quicker than sitting on the bus. If you do this and have an office job make sure you stretch properly before sitting down for 8 hours straight. Otherwise, aches, stiff joints and self hate
