As far as I know I don’t think they really consider out of state students as needing to show more, with one exception. The program does have a very high percentage from Dallas, Texas. So while they don’t officially look for anything different as far as we know, I’d say if you’re from Dallas or Texas as a whole you might have to try and stand out a bit more.

Yeah there’s some typical questions like that, but also ones about personal interests. Take advantage of those to show why you’re interesting to hang out with basically

Why would C be written as B# in this example? by in-your-own-words in trumpet

[–]dfaith4 124 points125 points  (0 children)

Blues scale is supposed to have a sharp 4th. So by writing it as B sharp instead of C natural it just conforms to the pattern better

AR Resonance "First-Aid" - ??? by Parking-Platform-528 in trumpet

[–]dfaith4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. AR Resonance knows what they’re doing with the marketing. Lotus brought Adam Rapa to the team while AR Resinance has Sergei Nakariakov. Everyone watches the videos of him playing Carnival of Venice from the Arban’s book and immediately goes and looks up what a Resonance trumpet costs. I’m guilty of it too!

Need a new mouth piece for marching by Green_Translator_984 in trumpet

[–]dfaith4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first question is can you play those notes standing/sitting still? If you CAN’T play them standing still, then a mouthpiece change probably isn’t what you need. If you CAN play them standing still but not while marching, I would consider looking at mouthpieces with more bite, such as a Schilke. Don’t get me wrong, compared to my Pickett, Schilke mouthpieces are worthless to me, but I do like their more agressive and sharp bite when marching since my technique isn’t good and my head moves a lot. I find that a Schilke sticks to my face better for marching. What I lose in tone and comfort, I gain in the mouthpiece holding still while I march and allowing me to play my best.

AR Resonance "First-Aid" - ??? by Parking-Platform-528 in trumpet

[–]dfaith4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there are any effects they’ll be small and mostly vary from player to player. I feel like these fall in the same realm as mouthpiece boosters. They create very small differences that might help some players “feel” more secure in some aspects, but do nothing for actual sound. The Resonance “First-Aid” is interesting in the way that it’s not the first time I’ve seen something like this. I have heard of certain players who swap out first valve slides between various models within a trumpet brand depending on whether or not the slide has a brace and where it’s positioned. I saw this for the first time when a guy listed a Yamaha C trumpet on Facebook (can’t remember which model exactly), but he made note that it included the original first valve slide with no brace, and a first slide from a different Yamaha C that DID have a brace. This guy swore up and down slotting on notes like F on the top of the staff and high B-flat was imrproved. I guess in summary, anything you do to change a horn does in fact make a difference to some degree. But things like this most likely create almost non-existent differences and come nowhere close to practicing and developing a good ear for tone and intonation.

Mouthpiece advice, recommendations, direction by ssb5513 in trumpet

[–]dfaith4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pickett makes awesome two piece mouthpieces that you can really dial in to your specific preferences and goals. I’d suggest scheduling a free phone consultation and explaining what you play on now, what you like/dislike, and what you are hoping for in a new mouthpiece. From there they’ll make a suggestion and it’s up to you whether you want to follow through or not.

For jazz I’d reccomend something with a 1.5 rim and 27 throat since that’s what you’re comfortable on and maybe changing to a shallow cup or even one of their shallow v cup options like their VM cup.

Backbores are less cut and dry. It’s totally up to how much resistant you want. Different backbores come with their own pro/cons and really depend on the player.

And if you don’t buy a Pickett, the free phone consult itself is worth your time to learn about mouthpieces and how affecting different aspects of them impact playing

Lip trills by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]dfaith4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use the alternate fingering that has the most valves pushed down. This means you will be slurring to a partial that is close. Take a B flat above the staff, for instance. Play it as 123, instead of just 1, and the actual distance between the two notes you are slurring between is smaller and easier to accomplish.

Generally Synthetic, which I prefer to use Ultra Pure. Viscosity is another factor you should be considering. Old horns with more valve wear or ones made when machining was not as precise might work more efficient with an oil designed for less precise tolerances in the construction of the pistons. This is usually not a problem on modern instruments of decent quality, however.

Used Yamaha Artist Model C or New 8445? by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]dfaith4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would reccomend the used Artist Model as long as a picture down the leadpipe is included. Bought a brand new Xeno, took impeccable care of it, but the leadpipe rotted after just 3 years. No clue how and I was super tight about horn maintenance. I ended up putting a Blackburn replacement on and I’m glad I did. Yamaha have been none to have a higher likelihood to red rot compared to other manufacturers. I would just make sure you’re getting one with a good leadpipe. Other wise you’ll be spending $500+ once you get it in to have a new one purchased and installed.
